A customer left a handbag in my shop today, I wasn't aware straightaway but when I saw it I found a passport so contacted the emergency number who turned out to be her dad. Girl subsequently rang me and she was on a train heading 100 odd miles home. I said I could post it so asked her to text me her address. Text came through with literally just her full name and address, no thank you, no offer to pay, nothing!

AIBU in think that if someone is doing you a pretty big favour you at least say Thanks?!

I found a girls ID on the night tube and found her on FB - She offered to pick it up from me but as I was going away I said I'd post it, good thing I checked as her address had changed, sent it over and got a nice FB message back when she got it.
I'd always send it tracked, people can claim they didn't get it.

ALiensAbductedMe · 22/05/2018 14:33

I would send a sarky reply "no need to thank me (obviously!) Postage is £XX, you can pay via paypal, here are the details: "

rainbowdashflip · 22/05/2018 14:57

I’m so shocked at how people are being so vengeful. She didn’t say thank you. Really impolite but I wouldn’t hesitate to return ASAP.

At your own expense? More fool you then.

OP there is absolutely no way I would be out of pocket because someone lost something.

I'm a nice person too and during the course of my job I often find things people have lost, mainly phones/bags/purses/cameras. I do my best to reunite items with owner, but I'm not paying to do so. The cost to post a bag sized parcel could be equal to an hours wage

Kikidelivers · 22/05/2018 14:59

No not at own expense I wouldn’t return.

If she’s not prepared to pay for postage then obviously not that important to her and i would give to charity.

If she does pay, and I don’t recieve a thanks, I would still return without hesitation.

MarthaArthur · 22/05/2018 15:00

Same thing happened to me op! Found a purse and contacted the name on facebook (very unusual name) offered to meet the woman next day butvshe never showed. She then messaged me to say she was at the drs and could we meet another day. Of course she was "busy" so i said i would post it to her. She gave me her address and i never heard from her again.

Thewhale2903 · 22/05/2018 15:01

Text her back and yell her how much the let's be will be. Hate people with no manners

Thewhale2903 · 22/05/2018 15:02

*Tell
*postage

Pancakeflipper · 22/05/2018 15:08

If I lost my bag with passport etc in it - I would declare you my superhero without a cape and embarrass you with declarations of thanks/flowers/chocs.

Tell her it will cost £xxxx for postage and give your bank details.
I am optimistically hoping she sent text in hurried relief and will follow up with a thanks.

And if any reader of this thread handed in a tatty grey fat face bag to the reception area of a city centre art gallery one Saturday in Dec 2016 (with money and gifts in tact). You were so kind and wish I could of thanked you.

expatinscotland · 22/05/2018 15:23

'Really impolite but I wouldn’t hesitate to return ASAP.'

Some people, quite a few in fact, truly cannot afford to pay to post an entire handbag and insure it and send it tracked to make sure it got there. That could cost about a tenner. That's not something some people have to spare on such a thing. I wouldn't hesitate to take it to a police station if they weren't willing to pay to have it sent back to them, though. That seems a fine option.

Pancakeflipper · 22/05/2018 15:26

Be cheaper than getting a new passport sorted.

And even if you can't afford it - a Thank You is free.

Daniellebt · 22/05/2018 15:40

I'm sorry but she is a rude ungrateful person and I would take it straight to the Police Station.
I keep hearing these stories and I can't wait for the day it happens to be so I can tell them off lol
I would give her a chance , send her one more message and if she is still blunt I would say " your lack of graciousness and attitude is as much as my efforts now to return your bag . Your handbag is at the police station"

Wildlingofthewest · 22/05/2018 16:12

Have you heard any more from her OP? I’m intrigued!!!

lanbro · 22/05/2018 18:42

Nope heard nothing more....

Have you still got the bag?!
Frankly I would hand it in at the police station now, it’s not your problem!
