to be pissed off with neighbour mowing grass today

I will probably be shot down for this. First really sunny day for months when we could enjoy our garden. We have grass and were sitting out for first time this year, enjoying late breakfast and the papers - utter bliss. Then next door neighbour started his very noisy ride-on mower. Their garden is much bigger than hours and it took nearly an hour of noise, petrol fumes etc. Then a peaceful break, and just relaxing again this afternoon when he started up again, and then produced another mower for the edges - more noise, more fumes.
For context we have had a really difficult time since last summer, very stressful and this was literally the first day we could really let go and relax without pressures to think about. Neighbour does not know that, but I am annoyed because it is inconsiderate. He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday. Very old fashioned probably, but I was brought up not to create any disturbance on a Sunday which was regarded as a day or rest when your neighbours deserved peace and quiet. For that reason, I never use a mower on a Sunday, or do other noisy building work, etc. Just needed to express my annoyance and regret at the return of tension so soon.

It would have been inconsiderate mowing at 2am. It's a sunny day, get a grip. Yabu.

JacquesHammer · 06/05/2018 18:54

He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday

I work from home. I’m working. Not making time to do reasonable weekend chores.

ILikeMyChickenFried · 06/05/2018 18:55

Of course YABU. If you could hear the noise outside my house today you'd probably have a meltdown. Multiple BBQs, a few people mowing lawns, various genres of music, adults laughing, children squealing. It's lovely enjoying summer and hearing everyone else doing the same

LEMtheoriginal · 06/05/2018 18:55

He can't do it in the week - he is working! I'm sorry but YABabitU. Do you cut your grass with a silent mower?

ilovesooty · 06/05/2018 18:55

Sorry, I don't think he was BU.

PetulantPolecat · 06/05/2018 18:56

My DH was going to do the same because yesterday the grass was still wet. I told him don’t you dare... can’t you hear next door are in their garden and both their kids are visiting today?

SoupDragon · 06/05/2018 18:56

Sunday is not the “day of rest” in every culture.

MrsJamin · 06/05/2018 18:56

Sorry you're being a tad unreasonable, but I think you do know you are. Of he's working from home, it's that, he's working. You could argue he could do it early one morning, but then that would wake people up, he could do it early evening but that would upset people trying to get babies to sleep. There's no good time for a noisy mower. Sorry. I empathise though, that must have been frustrating. Hope you get some peace tomorrow and find some calm then. Flowers

HolyMountain · 06/05/2018 18:56

I think you’re being unreasonable.

He’s mowing his lawn at a reasonable time and at a leisurely pace ,there’s not much to gripe about in my opinion.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 06/05/2018 18:56

It's a sunny Sunday in May, exactly the time when people are going to cut their grass. He wasn't at it for twelve hours solidly or at 2am. You're being ridiculous.

Also, just because people WFH doesn't mean they can randomly take time off to do their gardens then. They're working.

ferrier · 06/05/2018 18:56

Sorry op. Sunday's a day for doing gardening here and then relaxing after the gardening's finished.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 06/05/2018 18:56

YABU. A sunny Sunday is the perfect time to mow the lawn in England, its tradition.

Omgwtfbbq · 06/05/2018 18:56

Unless your neighbour is a gardener I think if he is working from home he probably should be actually working on a weekday shrug

Anyway, I’m off to mow my lawn now my neighbours’ DCs are asleep...

QuitMoaning · 06/05/2018 18:57

My OH works six days a week, and gets home between 9pm and midnight. When is he supposed to do it?

BettyPitts · 06/05/2018 18:57

You're being ridiculous.

Sorry you've had a tough year though hope things have improved now.

Etymology23 · 06/05/2018 18:57

Sorry, but mowing can’t be done when it’s raining and many people who have to work from home can’t take an hour out of their day to mow!

Not ideal, but it’s life, I’m afraid. I tend to take the opportunity to get on with my own gardening/DIY if the neighbours are busy doing theirs, or invite them over for a drink.

I’m sorry it has made you tense though - if they have a very large garden, are you rural enough to be able to just nip for a walk and take a picnic rug to have a quick snooze on until they’re done?

anyoldname76 · 06/05/2018 18:58

i wonder if my neighbours hate me, ive cut the grass today and strimmed the edges, as well as singing along to the radio Grin

ethelfleda · 06/05/2018 18:59

Of course YABU.

ICantCopeAnymore · 06/05/2018 19:00

Well only if his job title is 'Ride-on lawnmowerist'.

Etymology23 · 06/05/2018 19:02

anyoldname today my next-door neighbours and I had a barbecue and had music on WHILE we were barbecuing. Shock

Midthreademergencynamechange · 06/05/2018 19:04

Please please please can these ridiculous threads stop now please!

Of course your neighbour doesn't know about the stressful time you've had of it lately (sorry about that Flowers). How do you know he hasn't also been having a horribly stressful time and that mowing his lawn is relaxing for him?

Come on, op! It's part of living in close proximity with people.

stourton · 06/05/2018 19:04

Was thinking of getting my grass cut today. Will probably do it tomorrow, a bank holiday, probably another day of rest.

bellabasset · 06/05/2018 19:06

Today there have been BBQs, kids giggling, people playing music, strimmers and mowers going. After a cold
