to be pissed off with neighbour mowing grass today

I will probably be shot down for this. First really sunny day for months when we could enjoy our garden. We have grass and were sitting out for first time this year, enjoying late breakfast and the papers - utter bliss. Then next door neighbour started his very noisy ride-on mower. Their garden is much bigger than hours and it took nearly an hour of noise, petrol fumes etc. Then a peaceful break, and just relaxing again this afternoon when he started up again, and then produced another mower for the edges - more noise, more fumes.
For context we have had a really difficult time since last summer, very stressful and this was literally the first day we could really let go and relax without pressures to think about. Neighbour does not know that, but I am annoyed because it is inconsiderate. He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday. Very old fashioned probably, but I was brought up not to create any disturbance on a Sunday which was regarded as a day or rest when your neighbours deserved peace and quiet. For that reason, I never use a mower on a Sunday, or do other noisy building work, etc. Just needed to express my annoyance and regret at the return of tension so soon.

The church around the corner has been going all day. Singing, children screaming, preaching, more singing.....

bellabasset · 06/05/2018 19:07

posted too soon

and wet start I think we all want to get outside

toomuchtooold · 06/05/2018 19:07

You'd like it here in Germany - it's against the law to use power tools, mowers, hedge trimmers etc in residential areas on a Sunday. Together with the no Sunday opening it's a massive pain in the arse, but fair dos, it is very quiet here today Grin

overnightangel · 06/05/2018 19:08

Because no one has ever in the history of time mowed their grass on a sunny Sunday afternoon have they 🙄

kyrenialady · 06/05/2018 19:09

Are you my neighbour? My DH cut our lawn today using our ride on.

Sorry if so, he works long hours in a stressful job and today was the only time
we had.

YABU by the way mumsnet is a weird place at the moment.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 06/05/2018 19:10

YABU. We mowed our lawn yesterday. Neighbours on both sides AND one door up all did theirs today while we were in the garden potting up some plants and then lounging around with cold beers. Not a problem, totally acceptable behaviour.

The couple over the road jet washed their driveway this morning....it looks super!

My DH works from home on or two days per week but he can’t go out and mow the lawn then....he is paid to work and does work!

YABU. You know you are, really.

How is your neighbour supposed to know about your difficult time? Daft.

YABU and self-centred.

I’m sorry you’ve had a rough year but that’s nothing to do with your neighbour. People do tend to mow their lawns on sunny days.

Drknittingfrog · 06/05/2018 19:11

Move to Switzerland!. By law Sunday is a quiet day... No mowing no loud music no washing cars and no hanging washing out to dry in the garden... No shopping either but one gets used to that. In France the same regarding mowing (can't do it on Sunday)... So I am really surprised it's allowed in the UK...

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 06/05/2018 19:12

Our neighbours are power tool mad and 3 of them have been:

Mowing their tiny lawn with the mother of all lawnmowers for 45 mins. It's huge and so loud you cannot hear yourself talk even if you shout.

Washing their 2 cars with one of those water pressure things. For an hour. Their cars are spotless anyway because they are thoroughly pressure washed every week.

Removing the paving in their drive with a jackhammer.

I do realise people can only do these things at certain times. It's still affecting how much I can enjoy my day off. So ranting anonymously on the Internet is a pretty harmless way to vent.

So overall YABU to expect your neighbours to not mow their lawn today. And YANBU to feel pissed off at the noise I could honestly have killed the jackhammer guy who will be up at 9 tomorrow

MistyMinge · 06/05/2018 19:12

It's a mower, going for an hour. I can think of a lot worse noises to listen to. YABU, massively so. Most people work all week, often have places to be and things to do on a Saturday. Sunday is the only free day a lot of people will have.

I bet you'd be on here moaning if his back garden resembled The Day Of The Triffids!

Evangeline3 · 06/05/2018 19:13

Is my neighbour being unreasonable for using a household appliance on a weekend afternoon?

Eh, no. Hmm

ahouseofleaves · 06/05/2018 19:13

Also, just because people WFH doesn't mean they can randomly take time off to do their gardens then. They're working.

This.

Wiifitmama · 06/05/2018 19:14

We mowed our lawn today. And my husband was finally able to tackle the big pile of cut branches from the trees that have been sitting in a corner for over a month as they were too wet to put through the chipper. My kids also played table tennis. This was a couple of hours of noise in the middle of the day. Then we were quiet and went in and my neighbour started their noise. All seems very normal to me for a hot weekend. When else would we do these jobs? I sat outside first thing this morning with my coffee in the sunshine when everyone was not yet outside and had peace and quiet with just the bird song for company.

BrutusMcDogface · 06/05/2018 19:15

no hanging washing out to dry in the garden Sorry Switzerland, but this is bonkers! How is this noisy and how does it affect anyone at all?! I'd be really pissed off not to be able to make the most of a sunny day to dry washing!

Bramble71 · 06/05/2018 19:16

I think you're being a bit unreasonable. Your neighbours can't mow the lawn on a rainy day, can they.

Unfortunately if we choose to, or have to, live with near neighbours, then this is what we have to expect. A move to the countryside might be in order.

ShinyShooney · 06/05/2018 19:16

Lawnmower is much preferred over shrieking children. I'd happily swap!

Bombardier25966 · 06/05/2018 19:16

If it bothers you that much OP, you could offer to pay someone to mow the neighbour's lawn in the week. I'm sure he won't mind!

BrutusMcDogface · 06/05/2018 19:16

Op- yabu, by the way!

sweeneytoddsrazor · 06/05/2018 19:18

i wonder if my neighbours hate me, ive cut the grass today and strimmed the edges, as well as singing along to the radio

Omg if it was Radio 2 then yes they hate you Wink

spontaneousgiventime · 06/05/2018 19:19

I live in a village, the village pub is on the corner of the next street up. I was woken up this morning with shouting and singing. That is being unreasonable, mowing your lawn on a Sunday during the day is not.

OreoMini · 06/05/2018 19:20

I mowed my lawn today.
I made loads of noise packing the car with crap to take to the tip
I listened to miso in my garden
My kids were playing on the trampoline on and off all day

Sunday is not a day of rest. It’s get shit done day!

OreoMini · 06/05/2018 19:20

Music*

Chewbecca · 06/05/2018 19:21

YABU

Though I disagree with the WFH militia, when I wfh, the bonus is that I don't have to do my long commute so I do have more free time on those days and could easily mow the lawn at, say, 5:30pm.
