to be pissed off with neighbour mowing grass today

I will probably be shot down for this. First really sunny day for months when we could enjoy our garden. We have grass and were sitting out for first time this year, enjoying late breakfast and the papers - utter bliss. Then next door neighbour started his very noisy ride-on mower. Their garden is much bigger than hours and it took nearly an hour of noise, petrol fumes etc. Then a peaceful break, and just relaxing again this afternoon when he started up again, and then produced another mower for the edges - more noise, more fumes.
For context we have had a really difficult time since last summer, very stressful and this was literally the first day we could really let go and relax without pressures to think about. Neighbour does not know that, but I am annoyed because it is inconsiderate. He works from home a lot of the time, and could have done this on a weekday. Very old fashioned probably, but I was brought up not to create any disturbance on a Sunday which was regarded as a day or rest when your neighbours deserved peace and quiet. For that reason, I never use a mower on a Sunday, or do other noisy building work, etc. Just needed to express my annoyance and regret at the return of tension so soon.

Pretty obvious you know YABU. Get a grip.

Caken · 06/05/2018 19:44

Yabu.

What does piss me off though is people having bonfires on hot, sunny days.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 06/05/2018 19:44

Another YABU.

Grass needs cutting. It’s not an optional thing to do.

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 06/05/2018 19:46

You know YABU.

EggysMom · 06/05/2018 19:46

Gosh, I'm glad I live in an enlightened country that accepts some people might only have the Sunday to cut their grass ...

ZX81user · 06/05/2018 19:52

Maybe he should cut it with scissors?

TheRagingGirl · 06/05/2018 19:53

To be more clear, next door neighbour is his own boss and works only now and again during the week. He is often out in the garden just pottering, or doing DIY on weekdays

You sound really judgemental, OP. And not very nice, frankly, the way you comment on when your neighbours chooses to do things, his working patterns, and his use of his leisure time.

spontaneousgiventime · 06/05/2018 19:56

Perhaps an island with sheep to keep the grass down so you don't even have to use your own mower?

HTH

Maybe he gets pissed off with you doing yours during the week when he is trying to work?

Someone near me mowed theirs at fucking half 8 this morning. Windows were open 'cos it was warm. I didn't get to sleep until half 2 and had a restless night so could have done without being woken when I was having a rare late doze. However I'm sure neighbour didn't deliberately try to annoy me and just thought it was a beautiful morning, grass needed cut and cracked on. Our street was pretty quiet until nearly teatime. I think everyone was at the safari park!

DailyMailClickbait · 06/05/2018 20:00

Only on MN. Gardens must be a place of silence - just like libraries. God forbid you actually want to do something like mow your lawn, have friends round, or even just sit and have a chat with your partner. No! Silence!

Seriously, get a grip. My NDN has been sitting in her garden whilst her toddlers have been shrieking their heads off, with her music playing thrash rock which I cannot bear. So what? I could hear it but it wasn't ridiculously loud. She didn't complain on the last nice day we had when I spent a good lump of it chainsawing out an old hedge. We all have to get along. You just have to learn to try and tune it out.

TheLastNigel · 06/05/2018 20:00

My neighbour celebrated the sun by chain sawing something for two hours, and then burning it, rendering the gardens down half the street unusable due to smoke from the fire...I would gladly have taken a bit of mowing!

Notasunnybunny · 06/05/2018 20:01

I’m with you op. I had to deal with hours of strimmer noise yesterday and then it started up again this morning. Very tranquil location, neighbour is a stables. I’m not convinced it wasn’t on purpose. I would never do noisy gardening (a regular mower on a ‘normal’ sized lawn is ok) on a sunny day on a weekend because I would realise others were probably trying to enjoy their gardens. A domestic mower isn’t too bad and would only go on for half an hour or so, industrial equipment for hours and hours on end is at best thoughtless and selfish.

Some crossed wires here. I have not had a BBQ. Thanks for the comments.

The world doesn’t revolve around you, OP.

IronMansIronButt · 06/05/2018 20:02

It is not in the slightest bit anti social or inconsiderate to mow your fucking lawn in the middle of a sunny afternoon, and any gom who thinks it is needs to move far far away from other people.

SoyDora · 06/05/2018 20:04

No crossed wires, I was responding to another poster complaining about a neighbour, who had a bbq for 12 people last night.

dayinlifeof · 06/05/2018 20:05

I'd find it irritating but it's one of those things, it doesn't mean that your NDN is being unreasonable as he's hardly going to cut his grass in the rain is he?

Notasunnybunny · 06/05/2018 20:05

I should add mine is not the only residential property, about 20 of us had our garden enjoyment squashed for the weekend.

SnailMailFan · 06/05/2018 20:08

I like hearing lawnmowers. Its one of the sounds of summer for me.

My husband has chosen today to change all the door handles in the house. If my maths is right, thats 26 door handles (two per door). Next door have had his children round, playing. A few doors along mowed their lawn, and somewhere (quite a few doors away) theres a lady laughing. Bastards.

I have just dipped onto our local Facebook page to see an all-out war that’s been raging all day between some of our town councillors.

I imagine them all sat on the beach or in their gardens, hunched up over their phones, desperate to have the Last Word while their families roll their eyes and growl “For God’s sake, give it a rest!!”

Funny how some people like to spend their leisure time Smile
