To think Jamie Oliver shouldn't be so smug about getting artificial sweeteners in ribena

He's calling it beautiful that the sugar tax that he campaigned and persuaded the government to implement "a beautiful thing" as ribeana has half the sugar now. But it's still just as sweet as it's been replaced with artifical sweeteners so don't see how its improving anything, could be making it woorse.

'No I don't, it will just be another botched fix that doesn't do anything but waste time and distract people.

I want celebrities and their egos to just stay out of politics and for the mps to stop giving them so much time.'

Bravo! Absolutely!

4yoniD · 02/05/2018 16:48

I'm with you Op, although selfishly - dd1 is intolerant of the main artificial sweeteners. She previously enjoyed an occasional Ribena- the only squash/fizzy/unhealthy drink she liked and could drink. I'm sad there is now no "special" drink for her (she doesn't like the really fancy Belvoir type squash, and nothing fizzy, and everything else has artificial sweetener)

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 02/05/2018 16:52

JO looks like he should lay off the sugar tbh.

Anyway guess what , artificial sweeteners are worse for you than sugar is.

Lethaldrizzle · 02/05/2018 16:56

So artificial sweeteners are worse than sugar. So here's an easy solution - don't have either

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 02/05/2018 16:58

exactly Lethaldrizzle.

0lgaDaPolga · 02/05/2018 17:47

Has this just happened?! I bought some ribena today as it makes my morning sickness ever so slightly better and thought it tasted horrible. Just checked the bottle and it’s now got sweeteners in! Ugh.

Hillarious · 02/05/2018 18:20

The soft drinks company will realise that impact very soon. I, meanwhile, will be out buying citric acid and picking elderflower heads.

NotAnotherJaffaCake · 02/05/2018 18:27

Added salt is at its lowest levels ever thanks to campaigns exactly like this one.... It's also part of the reason more sugar has found its way into processed foods as manufacturers try to compensate for missing salt.

gluteustothemaximus · 02/05/2018 19:48

It happened around March I think.

They (Ribena) have deliberately kept it quiet, not wanting a backlash (which is what happened with Irn Bru).

It is wrong, on so many levels. They haven't changed their front label at all.

I bought it without thinking I needed to check a few weekends ago, and I spent the entire weekend in bed with a severe migraine. I react pretty badly to sweeteners.

AnnabelleLecter · 02/05/2018 19:54

Before long we will be buying illegal packets of sugar from shady back street dealers.

TroysMammy · 02/05/2018 20:27

Why can't Ribena keep the original recipe but it can only be sold to over 18's like alcohol? Responsible parents will only buy the shitty version for their children but could indulge at their pleasure.

On the other hand we'd probably have the huns on Facebook having a Ribena o'clock.

GummyGoddess · 02/05/2018 21:03

@NotAnotherJaffaCake The levels of artificial sweetener will rise towards the experimental levels though if sugar is replaced by them, therefore the studies are worth looking at.

I have wondered if sweeteners cause more calories to be consumed as your body looks for its sugar fix, you drink the AS drink, your body doesn't get the sugar it wants so you drink more and more of it.

jnfrrss · 02/05/2018 21:42

Ribena has had a huge backlash, their social media is full of people complaining and it's mostly 1 star reviews on ocado.

They are going to have to do something!

peoplearemean · 02/05/2018 22:19

I hope Ribena still works as a hangover cure 😬 especially the strawberry one, please don't mess with that!

Peanutbuttercups21 · 02/05/2018 22:25

I hate the taste of sweetener

I can always taste it, and to me it tastes bad (not like sugar as all)

The aftertaste of sweetener is particularly bad, it is a vile almost bitter "sweetness"

My brain just goes "no no no"

This stuff cannot be healthy

HelenaDove · 02/05/2018 22:55

the strawberry one is no added sugar now. I saw it in Sainsburys today.

madeyemoodysmum · 02/05/2018 23:02

I was in home bargains today and they had san pelligrino shipped in from euro. No Sweeteners. I stocked up.

I really really hope ribena lose so much money they back track on this.
I've notice bottles on offer for £1.50 since they changed. Not seen it that cheap before. Wonder if it's not selling.

Growingboys · 02/05/2018 23:10

I'm sure AS are carcinogenic.
Pyrrhic victory.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/05/2018 17:13

But San Pel is so eyewateringly expensive anyway! (And less be honest, the only reason producers are doing this is economics, there's no altruism here, they are just trying to dodge the sugar tax) Why didn't they just stay expensive with sugar instead of expensive with sweeteners? I don't know anyone who drinks gallons of the stuff, because -expense.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 10/05/2018 22:24

Something has to be done to tackle obesity though, the sugar tax is one step to help do so.

I'll be signing this:

We are now on Belvoir blackcurrant and blueberry, also the ginger one is lush. Threw out the Ribena when they added the sweetener, it really I am told by teenagers quite vile. I add just a splash to grand childrens water. Nothing wrong with water though children should drink more if their parents are concerned about the intake.

HadronCollider · 11/05/2018 09:48

Is the Belvoir decent? Thanks for the tip

The Belvoir is lovely, the ginger when topped up with lemonade is like drinking old fashioned ginger beer. The blackcurrant goes down so well too, as Ribena used to taste but better.

throwawayagain · 11/05/2018 18:35

Excellent.
Let's replace sugar with carcinogenic ingredients.
Hmm
How about water JO? I drink distilled water. My family do too. No sugar, no carcinogens.
Finding a squash without Aspartame is like seeking the holy grail. It's filth.
You can shove your fluoride, while you're at it.

throwawayagain · 11/05/2018 19:15

And don't fat people know they are fat?
Seriously, it should be about personal responsibility. Why force artificial sweeteners down people?
I have autoimmune issues. Theoretically I should be morbidly obese, except I'm not.
Sugar does not exacerbate my issues. Aspartame is a menace.

Exercise is an option. Healthy living is about balancing lifestyle choices. Sitting on your arse swigging aspartame is not going to make anyone healthy.
