To think Jamie Oliver shouldn't be so smug about getting artificial sweeteners in ribena

He's calling it beautiful that the sugar tax that he campaigned and persuaded the government to implement "a beautiful thing" as ribeana has half the sugar now. But it's still just as sweet as it's been replaced with artifical sweeteners so don't see how its improving anything, could be making it woorse.

Where is the evidence to say sweetners are carcinogenic?
See point 2 here:
www.wcrf-uk.org/uk/preventing-cancer/cancer-risk-factors/myths-and-controversies-about-what-causes-cancer

Whereas is there loads of evidence saying an excess of sugar is a factor in weight gain and being overweight / obese is a leading cause of cancer (only second to smoking).

Lethaldrizzle · 12/05/2018 10:22

I'm amazed that do many adults drink so many sweet drinks.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 12/05/2018 10:33

I know. Same with kids.
I mainly drink water & tea. Occasionally coffee & wine, and very occasionally a diet coke. Fruit juice as part of my breakfast.
DH has water & the occasional beer or diet coke and again fruit juice with breakfast.
The kids only ever have water or milk. Very occasionally some squash at a party. They have never had fizzy drinks.

madeyemoodysmum · 12/05/2018 18:45

Maybe not cancer but I'm convinced they cause issues with blood sugars anyway so are pointless
I also would not at all suprised if they are linked to dementia as well.

maxybrown · 12/05/2018 19:06

We don't often have cordial but am so pissed off about ribena. I stopped having sweeteners years ago and now if I have something with them in it tastes like absolute poison. Awful awful after taste. I'm happy with water but it's the choice removed that pisses me off. We get belvoir and other similar ones instead now

So can we not get lemonade from anywhere now?!! Suppose will get the fevertree Sicilian lemonade then when I fancy it.

Andrewofgg · 12/05/2018 19:13

The bloody man should be less smug, full stop.

In fact he should be silent and preferably invisible.

Lethaldrizzle · 12/05/2018 19:15

I'm all for it. Go on Jamie!

TooRight · 13/05/2018 08:41

I'm so glad I read this just now (not had a chance to RTFT, sorry) My online shop is due to arrive this evening so now I can send the big bottle of ribena back with the driver. It's better than throwing it in the bin and wasting my money. Thanks yet again Mumsnet Grin

HadronCollider · 13/05/2018 09:24

Yep save yourself the cash. I had big bottle which ended up down the sink and then last week my mum turned up with two smaller ones she got on offer. Had to feign delight and now they are sitting on the counter unopened. I'll have to find someone I can palm them off to.

noeffingidea · 13/05/2018 09:52

Seriously it should be about personal responsibility
They've been trying that approach for years now. It hasn't worked on a population level. It's time to make the food industry take responsibility.
Why force artificial sweeteners down people?
WTF? No one is forcing artificial sweeteners down anybody. Check the label. If you don't want to drink whats in it then don't buy it. Either buy another product, or buy some ingredients and make your own products.

HelenaDove · 16/05/2018 02:53

And now hes coming for the two for one pizza deals.

HadronCollider · 16/05/2018 05:35

Oh hell no!

Why doesn't he just f off?

Growingboys · 16/05/2018 05:40

I agree. So much worse than sugar. Stupid smug (and overweight !) celebrity.

Igneococcus · 16/05/2018 06:46

Your best bet are specials at Lidl or Aldi. I bought some cloudy lemonade and some raspberry lemonade at Aldi this week which both are AS free and Lidl has sometimes specials in the Deluxe range that are AS free, but you need to stock up when you find them.
If anybody has a suggestion for a very gingery, very fizzy Ginger Ale that is AS free, I'd be very grateful. I've used Old Jamaica Ginger Ale for years now to finish off migraines but they also changed the recipe and I can taste the fecking sucralose which only increases my nausea.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 16/05/2018 07:30

'Personal responsibility'
But then whose responsibility is it when a person ends up using NHS services due to complications of obesity / diabetes / CHD etc etc.?

Lethaldrizzle · 16/05/2018 07:52

Just stop drinking ribena and eat only one pizza. Easy
