Did she regift my present?

This is a bit of an odd one.

It’s my birthday and I’ve just had lunch with my DM and DSis.

DSis gave me a gift which was lovely of her (I wasn’t expecting anything) but when I opened it, it was exactly the same gift I had given her at Xmas.

I must have looked surprised because she quickly said “please don’t think I’ve given you what you gave me. It’s just that I liked it so much that I thought you’d like one yourself”.

FWIW I’m not really fussed if she had recycled my gift to her back to me but AIBU to think it’s a bit odd?

She's probably genuine. I wouldn't read to much into it. The if she was hoping to recycle it she probably wouldn't give it to you or mention it when she had.

KurriKurri · 12/03/2018 16:10

It depends what it is really - if it's a Boots Christmas toiletry set then she's regifting, if it is something (such as a book or CD or whatever) that she really enjoyed she is probably being genuine.

If you believe it is a regift, hang on to it and give it back for her birthday and expect it to be retunred to you for Christmas - start a trend where you never have to actually buy each other a present again Grin

Ha ha @KurriKurri Grin

That’s actually a really fun idea! I don’t think my DSis would find it funny though. She’s quite sensitive and would think I was taking the piss, which of course I would be but in a good humoured way!

It was a body shop set, you know the ones with a shower gel, body butter, hand cream and spray. Nothing fancy. Costs around £20.

My gut feeling is that either she forgot I was the one who gave it to her and only realised when I looked surprised OR she hated it and gave it back to me as a passive aggressive message.

It does kind of depend on what it is but without any evidence to the contrary maybe just give her the benefit of the doubt and that maybe you're the one being a bit odd. Wink

Totally a regift.

ToadOfSadness · 12/03/2018 16:23

You can regift to her with no worries, she said she liked it so much when you gave it to her, so she would be pleased to get it again.

lecossaise · 12/03/2018 16:25

Absolutely a regift, if what she said was true she would at least have got a different scent...

RLOU88 · 12/03/2018 16:26

Seems to be a re-gift only because it would be strange to buy the exact same toiletry set when there are so many others.

Bluntness100 · 12/03/2018 16:26

Yup , total regift and she realised by the look on your face. Regift it back for Xmas or her next birthday.

M00nUnit · 12/03/2018 16:28

Yes it sounds like she re-gifted it OP and had forgotten it was you that gave it to her. Oh well, it sounds like a nice set to me so hopefully you'll enjoy using it!

Petalflowers · 12/03/2018 16:35

Totally re-gift, and totally forgot you gave it to her.

She surely would have bought you a different scent if she had bought it anew.

OverinaFlash · 12/03/2018 16:35

Depending on your relationship with her, you could just believe that she genuinely thought you would like it, and only realised how it might look when you opened it and looked surprised?

DurhamDurham · 12/03/2018 16:39

The pair of you could keep this up fo years, the same Body Shop gift set being passed from one to the other every birthday/Christmas Grin

halfwitpicker · 12/03/2018 16:46

Either genuine or genius.

Who would have the gall to do that?

halfwitpicker · 12/03/2018 16:46

I think she wins CF of the week.

BertrandRussell · 12/03/2018 16:49

Nothing wrong with recycling. Just say thank you and forget it. She may very well be feeing mortified at giving it to the wrong person. Be kind.

strawberrysparkle · 12/03/2018 16:49

Sounds like a regift and she realised when she saw your face!

Surely body shop update the gift sets from Christmas anyway? Odd that she would buy exactly the same gift.

DuckBilledAardvark · 12/03/2018 16:49

Please gift it back to her at the next available opportunity and keep us posted for Christmas 😎

Assburgers · 12/03/2018 16:49

Mm, yep. I think she hated it and gave you it back. Which makes her a bit of an arsehole, but it is a very impersonal gift.

How did she react at the time when you gave her it?

Orangecake123 · 12/03/2018 16:50

Regifted! xD

rocketgirl22 · 12/03/2018 16:52

It was a regift, and she completely forgot and would most likely be mortified to realise this.

Older women don't 'tend' to go for Bodyshop ( I know there will be some) but given it is exactly the same one as well, I think she didn't like it and put it away for someone who will.

Assuming you like bodyshop and you bought it for her, it could be worse.

Jaxhog · 12/03/2018 16:52

Do you like it? If so, then be thankful she didn't re-gift a present you don't like! Either way, don't ever give her a BS gift again. Or only ones you don't mind getting back.

Oysterbabe · 12/03/2018 16:52

Definitely give it back to her. Tell her you assume she'd have used up the last one so bought her another as she'd liked it so much.

rocketgirl22 · 12/03/2018 16:53

Love the idea of you regifting it again :)

Would love to be a fly on the wall for that!!!

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/03/2018 16:53

^^ This. Save all the angst about shopping, choosing presents, budgeting etc. Just pass a few of these around the family ad infinitum.

Boots latest campaign makes me laugh. 'Show them you know them' by buying them a Boots Gift Set. Yup, because nothing says you know people less a generic crappy no thought gift like that Hmm.
