To ask how don't you iron?!?!

I have a normal washing machine and I put my laundry into it. I make sure I don't put too much in and when it's finished I take everything straight out. I wash at 40°.

Why oh why does everything come out like a crumpled rag? I've tried other washing machines and it's the same.

Also I have to dry everything apart from underwear, socks and towels on Aires because all clothes items shrink, even if I use the cooler setting. Why?!

I can't dry outside as I don't have a garden.

I'm disheartened by all these threads about tumble drying and not having to iron when nothing I do works and the clothes are always so creased and crumpled, ironing is unavoidable.

What am I doing wrong?

I often find if I shake and smooth the clothes when they come out and then leave to dry hanging flat over an airer that they can do without ironing. Depends what. T shirts, jersey dresses etc are all fine like this.

Everything gets a really good shake as it comes out and you have to be careful how you hang it up to dry.
And I also don't wear stuff that is really crease-y!

Agree about shaking and smoothing. But the main thing is to buy clothes that don’t need ironing and to not mind looking a little crumpled

We never iron, not even sure where ours is! As soon as the machine stops shake everything out and smooth and hang up on an airer. Jumpers/blouses get hung on hangers straight away!
If yours is coming out really crumpled could your spin be too long or fast? If they come out too dry the creases don't fall out as easily

Turn the spin speed down on the washing machine. Take out as soon as finished then shake vigorously. Hang all tops, dresses etc on hangers.

Anything likely to need ironing gets put straight on a hanger, while wet, creases brushed off or shaken out the out quickly (5 seconds), collars and fabric around buttons smoothed briefly, and then it's hung up on thr shower curtain rail to dry. Works for pretty much everything - cotton shirts, dresses, anything really. But my work place has a somewhat relaxed dress code and dh is in the arts so not having perfectly ironed shirts isn't a problem.

Hang it all on plastic hangers and put in doorways then straight into the wardrobe. Don't put wet clothes on wooden or metal hangers though.

Yes what s it spinning at? If you reduce the spin they come out wetter but less creased.

I tumble dry everything I can, which gets the creases out. The things that can't be tumbled go on the clothes airer and are generally fabrics which don't crease (floaty blouses, gym stuff, etc).

OP I'm with you, except I do use a tumble dryer and my clothes still come out creased. Even if I empty the dryer as soon as it's finished and smooth and fold the dry clothes, they still need ironing. I read the threads where people haven't touched an iron in months with a combination of disbelief and raging envy.

I iron almost all of our clothes because they simply look better. My SIL was utterly baffled when I said I ironed jumpers. People who say you can’t tell the difference are just wrong. What they mean is they don’t care which is fine but don’t kid yourself it looks the same!

I don’t iron anything-not a single thing.
Normal 40 wash, 1200 spin everything gets a vigorous shake and put on an airer. I have to do the washing as DH doesn’t have the shake technique down so his washes still look a bit crumpled.
I don’t really buy things that look like they need ironed and out work uniforms don’t need any ironing.

I agree Matilda Clothes look so much better for being ironed.

I think what you're doing wrong is caring too much about society's expectations. We rarely iron anything but I'm well aware many things do look better ironed. We just don't care enough to prioritise it over other things (sleep, tv, sex, snacking on giant packets of crisps on the sofa etc). Life is way too short

I don't shake the clothes! I just wash them mostly on a 50 degrees cycle then chuck them in the tumble dryer, they all come out crease free, if your dryer does a cool cycle at the end they are perfect to fold/ hang and put away. I only iron dh work shirts. I do use plenty of fabric conditioner though not sure if this helps?

I find that an important step is caring less

My fab new dryer has an ironing setting 😄 although I still need to make sure I shake and fold/hang as soon as it's finished. But also I don't buy clothes which need ironing.

We find everything comes out crumpled, same as you, OP.

We try to smooth things out as much as possible when we hang them up to dry. Hubby wears polo shirts for work, so it's a case of getting them out of the dryer quick sharp and hanging them up. Luckily, his trousers and fleeces never need ironing.

Do you empty the machine straight after it’s stopped? I never iron anything just hang out to dry immediately or take out of machine and fold immediately

My cleaner does my weekly ironing

I find only fleecy stuff and certain synthetics doesn’t need ironing

Have an 800 spin cycle and put on hangers to,dry - still no crease free

All this shaking and smoothing and hanging - I'd rather just iron it all! And it looks better.
I do sit down ironing - put the board on a lower setting, telly on, brew by the side- quite enjoy it! Get DH and DD to put away, hate that bit!

I never iron, and we don’t have a tumble dryer. I just hang everything to dry on a clothes horse or on the line, and make sure I have snapped it smooth, like a matador with a red flag.

The only things which get ironed in my house are DH's work shirts and the DC's school shirts and shorts. Everything else is tumble dried and folded whilst warm.

Are you overloading your machine OP? Mine comes out more crumpled from a very full wash. I still don't care though
