To ask how don't you iron?!?!

I have a normal washing machine and I put my laundry into it. I make sure I don't put too much in and when it's finished I take everything straight out. I wash at 40°.

Why oh why does everything come out like a crumpled rag? I've tried other washing machines and it's the same.

Also I have to dry everything apart from underwear, socks and towels on Aires because all clothes items shrink, even if I use the cooler setting. Why?!

I can't dry outside as I don't have a garden.

I'm disheartened by all these threads about tumble drying and not having to iron when nothing I do works and the clothes are always so creased and crumpled, ironing is unavoidable.

What am I doing wrong?

Alas, DS is taking his cost and jumper off literally as he goes through the school door
You'll be at home not seeing him looking slightly crumpled, so who cares?

Can I just ask... all those who say they just buy clothes that don’t need ironing .. how do you KNOW they don’t need ironing?!

Mari50 · 25/02/2018 19:52

Personally I think the not ironing thing depends on your personality, if you don’t mind things looking a bit crumpled then don’t iron. If you prefer the neat appearance that goes with ironing you’re never going to get that with line drying or tumbling and shaking and folding no matter what they say on here.
It’s really easy to spot non ironers.

Anatidae · 25/02/2018 19:55

The only thing I iron is my sewing.

I live in jeans and t shirts. Lots of the t shirts are thin merino wool so no ironing there.

Dh irons work shirts if he’s away with work, I’d iron very select items if we were going out anywhere (if... we never do!) otherwise neither of us have any inclination to iron

I wonder if water quality where everyone lives makes a difference? I don’t iron anything - if I give it a good shake and smooth then dry it over the airer or out on the whirly then it’s fine. Admittedly, neither of us wear shirts and I avoid linen like the plague!

I don’t use softener because of my allergies but I do live in the west of Scotland and our water is very soft.

I'm a teacher and I used to work in their school. The staff there are particularly nasty and I guarantee they'd talk. I suppose it doesn't affect me though as I wouldn't know about it!

I agree, namechange, it is odd how crumpled clothes aren't acceptable. As long as they're clean, it shouldn't matter.

No ironing here either, just smooth and dry! Maybe I look crumpled (I don't think we do) but life's too short for ironing in my opinion. There's so much more to do with my time!

UnaOfStormhold · 25/02/2018 20:15

MrsGrindah, I scrunch a sleeve or hem in my hand and see what it looks like. If it creases badly it will not only require ironing but even after ironing will probably look crumpled quickly when worn.

Catinthebath · 25/02/2018 20:19

I iron my lad’s school uniform and a dress shirt for my partner now and again but nothing else gets ironed. I avoid clothes that can’t just be hung in a damp bathroom

JustBeingJobless · 25/02/2018 21:03

I just wash, tumble dry and fold whilst still warm. Never had anything shrink and never have to iron anything. Maybe I just have low standards though Grin

rabbitrabbit12 · 25/02/2018 21:11

My partner does all the ironing he loves doing it!!
I can't air dry clothes I find it smells musty..

BlackeyedSusan · 25/02/2018 21:14

I am going to have to start ironing school shirts soon though.

MinnieMinchkin · 25/02/2018 22:50

Things look better ironed BUT DH cycles to work with crumpled shirts in his bag and DD is in such a hot classroom that her shirts are drenched with sweat by the time she takes her cardi off, so why would anyone iron??

Flobalob · 25/02/2018 22:56

School trousers come out creased and so I fold them and hang them on the hot radiator to dry. They end up mostly fine unless they've sat in the washing machine wet for a few hours.
