To ask how don't you iron?!?!

anxious2017 · 25/02/2018 11:12

I have a normal washing machine and I put my laundry into it. I make sure I don't put too much in and when it's finished I take everything straight out. I wash at 40°.

Why oh why does everything come out like a crumpled rag? I've tried other washing machines and it's the same.

Also I have to dry everything apart from underwear, socks and towels on Aires because all clothes items shrink, even if I use the cooler setting. Why?!

I can't dry outside as I don't have a garden.

I'm disheartened by all these threads about tumble drying and not having to iron when nothing I do works and the clothes are always so creased and crumpled, ironing is unavoidable.

What am I doing wrong?

I don’t iron anything at all any more. You do need to have slightly lower standards imho Wink - there will be a few creases in your laundry, but the ephiphany comes when you just don’t care about that.

Most of the bad creases drop out as you wear the item IME.

My T shirts and jeans go in the tumble dryer. I CBA wearing the clothes that require ironing, because I currently (last 3 years or so) CBA ironing anything other than DC school uniforms. DH irons his own stuff.

I am under no illusion that my clothes look presentable, but I CBA.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/02/2018 11:54

Hmm. I don't know why your things come out crumpled. Maybe I am just wrinkle-blind and ours are awful. I honestly can't see any wrinkles. I have a habit of over-stuffing the washing machine (7kg) and can transfer it all to the tumble (8kg) and sometimes leave it there for a few days.

We got rid of our iron (which I'm regretting as sometimes need it for crafts), we just have a garment steamer which DH uses for his work shirts. Not got kids in school uniform yet though! But there are lots of non-iron uniform options as far as I know.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 25/02/2018 11:55

'are awful'? I mean are FINE!

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 11:55

It’s all in the shaking. Shake really hard and then hang up straight away, on a hanger. That’s the way to do it.

But to be fair I don’t really care if I look a bit crumpled. Life is too short.

i'm with trills. life's too short

I ♥ ironing.

It is my time to catch up the tele that I have missed, of chat to friends on loud speaker.

I iron once a week, usually on a Sunday, for 4-5 hrs at a time.

I HAVE to iron bedding - a crumpled looking bed is a crime in my house.

I iron everything apart from my underwear (I do iron DH boxers), towels and obviously bath/kitchen mats etc.

I can always tell when someone is wearing unironed clothes - their clothes generally look shabby.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2018 11:56

Ironing school uniform? ConfusedNope, just hang them straight up or put in dryer.

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 11:58

5 hours of ironing in one go on a Sunday? ShockShock

Wow. I guess we all like different things but I’d rather go shopping, have sex, spend time with the dc, go out for a walk or go to the gym - anything but that!

Trills · 25/02/2018 11:59

Most things that are worn close to the body will relax after 10 mins on a warm human.

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2018 11:59

My response to people who think my clothes look shabby is generally, “oh well, never mind”.

Enjoy all that blissful ironing time, I’ll be off down the pub instead. Grin

I use a vented drier. Pretty much Everything goes in there. Even in the summer. Most stuff looks ok. When it comes out. I send a pile of shirts, blouses and dresses to the ironing lady about every three weeks - costs about £15.

frankchickens · 25/02/2018 12:04

I just wear crumpled clothes

brownelephant · 25/02/2018 12:05

give clothes a 'flick' and smoothe with before hanging.

but the main thing is not buying things that need ironing if possible.
jersey/knitted type of fabrics don't wrinkle as much as woven fabrics.
cotton wrinkles less than linon...

BigusBumus · 25/02/2018 12:07

I don't iron. I tumble dry most things and go to it as soon as it beeps. I then fold things in order of what needs to be ironed the most, folding it in the same way I would fold an ironed item. Then it gets laid in the washing basket and the weight of all the other folded items going on top kind of squashes the hot folded fabric into the right shape!

BigChocFrenzy · 25/02/2018 12:08

I haven't ironed anything since 1974, my 1st year at Uni

  • I considered those umpteen decades of ironing in my future, how many hours of life wasted and decided "Nope"

I don't buy anything that needs ironing
and I've always worked in STEM fields where dress is casual

Confusedbeetle · 25/02/2018 12:09

As above, choose the right clothes, very light spin. hang or straighten to dry. I dont use a tumble drier but have an aga. When tee shirts, polo shirts, fleeces , sheets are just about dry, they get a firm fold and pile on the aga. You could do similar without and aga, just pile up a heavy stack with towels on the top.

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 25/02/2018 12:09

Don't buy linen or button up shirts. My family live in jeans and t shirts and jumpers / hoodies. We can all wear jeans to school and work. No need to iron.

swampytiggaa · 25/02/2018 12:09

I just don’t care tbh. I bought non iron shirts for the kids - they wear their blazers pretty much all day so the shirts don’t show.

With four children at home I do at least one wash load a day - no way am I adding ironing to that!

PuppyMonkey · 25/02/2018 12:10

I don’t fold either - clothes I mean - straight on a hanger, into the wardrobe.

Evelynismycatsformerspyname · 25/02/2018 12:11

The opinion of anyone who judges unironed casual wear or bedsheets is not worth noticing.

Trills · 25/02/2018 12:12

I wonder how much the ironing in front of the TV or ironing while on the phone is a symptom of women not feeling that they are allowed to just watch TV or just have a chat with a friend. They should be doing chores.

MikeUniformMike · 25/02/2018 12:12

Are you overfilling the drum?

AnnaMagnani · 25/02/2018 12:20

No ironing here. Stuff is crammed into the washing machine as much as will fit in one go. Also no outside washing line/tumble drier.

Top tips:

Don't buy clothing that needs ironing. All my work dresses can be dried inside on a clothes hanger and then no ironing. Buy tops, sweatshirts etc that won't need ironing after a quick shake and drape over the airer.

Have a cleaner/husband. Only things that get ironed are DH's shirts and our bedlinen. DH and the cleaner do those.

Care less Grin

Parker231 · 25/02/2018 12:21

Nothing gets ironed here. Everything goes straight from the washing machine to the tumble dryer and then onto hangers. The only exception is DH’s shirts which he sends out for washing and ironing.

Life’s too short to keep ironing week in week out.
