To ask how don't you iron?!?!

anxious2017 · 25/02/2018 11:12

I have a normal washing machine and I put my laundry into it. I make sure I don't put too much in and when it's finished I take everything straight out. I wash at 40°.

Why oh why does everything come out like a crumpled rag? I've tried other washing machines and it's the same.

Also I have to dry everything apart from underwear, socks and towels on Aires because all clothes items shrink, even if I use the cooler setting. Why?!

I can't dry outside as I don't have a garden.

I'm disheartened by all these threads about tumble drying and not having to iron when nothing I do works and the clothes are always so creased and crumpled, ironing is unavoidable.

What am I doing wrong?

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I don't iron bedding or pajamas, much to my mother's disgust. I find it too hard as I'm disabled, which is why I want to cut down on ironing!

I could care less I suppose, but things are SO crumpled I would feel shabby.

I don't think I overfill but maybe I do. My spin is in the thousands so it could well be that! I'll try a slower spin.

I'd like to get away with not ironing the DCs polo shirts for school but they seem to be the worst for crumpling.

I never iron, and we don’t have a tumble dryer. I just hang everything to dry on a clothes horse or on the line, and make sure I have snapped it smooth, like a matador with a red flag.

Me too.

The only exception is that I would iron DH's shirt if he was going to a funeral/wedding, and I occasionally am asked to iron transfers onto T-shirts.

OutComeTheWolves · 25/02/2018 12:26

I'm quite fat so it tends to just stretch the creases out to be honest.

UpstartCrow · 25/02/2018 12:27

I use a washing powder that says its anti crease, it seems to work pretty well. Plus softener. We get stuff straight out the machine, shake it out and hang it up.

brownelephant · 25/02/2018 12:28

dh sorts out his own work shirts.
he doesn't iron either.
washer has a 'shirt' cycle, basically extra rinse where starch could be added and low spin.
flick and onto hanger to dry.

kaitlinktm · 25/02/2018 12:29

That does sound like a high spin speed - mine is usually about 800 and can be less.

I have found to that some clothes "get used" to being ironed - don't know why that should be. My ex had a few older shirts which he used to have ironed at home (by his mum) and these always looked more creased than newer ones which had never been ironed. Of course linen-type stuff always needs ironing - but then it creases as soon as you wear it anyway.

I haven't ironed clothes on a regular basis since 1980 - I only really use the iron occasionally or for sewing/altering clothes etc. (Not very often).

The secret is when people say they don't iron anything and nobody can't tell is that everybody can tell they're just too polite to say.

That made me smile. [carries on eating pre-lunch snack with less guilt]

anxious2017 · 25/02/2018 12:32

I'm really fat but wear baggy so it's still creased Grin

Chunky the opinion anyone who gives head space to judging others for wearing clean, unironed clothes isn't worth the oxygen it takes them to form it.

kaitlinktm · 25/02/2018 12:39

I don't think that nobody can tell - but am perfectly happy with them being too polite to say. That way they can judge silently if they like, and I can wear my clean, unironed clothes and use the time for things I like doing. Win win. Grin

MuffinMad · 25/02/2018 12:40

I had a friend who would tumble dry the washing then just dump the lot in a bin bag till she got round to ironing it. By then, it would be all crumpled and she had a big ironing job on her hands.
I iron about once every 2 months. The clothes are straight out of the tumble drier and folded. The heat in the clothes gets the creases out, I find.

Hate ironing with a passion.

DP is a tradesperson and his clothes are disgusting after one day of work so ironing just isn't necessary. I find that things that need ironing just don't get worn for me/kids so just buy things that get away without being ironed. We don't have school shirts yet though.
We also have a tumble dryer and I think this does make a difference. I hate it. I think I'll have to pay someone when I need to do it.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 25/02/2018 12:49

Oh and also agree with Trills

Fairylea · 25/02/2018 13:05

If someone judges me for not ironing what does it actually mean? Just that I don’t iron. You can’t judge how lazy / busy / etc someone is (if that even matters anyway!) by whether they iron or not. I just don’t like ironing. Couldn’t care less whether people judge me or not. I go to the gym a lot anyway so most of my stuff is stretched to fuck anyway.

Arapaima · 25/02/2018 13:08

Anyone who judges me for not ironing is absolutely welcome to! It does not bother me at all if they are Smile

thenightsky · 25/02/2018 13:19

Never ironed a school uniform in all the years mine were at school (1991 to 2000 in total).

Strategic drying is the answer. Fold shirts very smoothly over radiators and they come out looking ironed. Trousers the same, but make sure you fold where the front creases are mean be. Drape over radiator so front creases presses in as it would if ironed. Skirts go on radiator with the waistband just tucked over the top to hold it on against the wall and the fullness of fabric hanging down the front.

Never spin faster than 800.

HandbagKrabby · 25/02/2018 13:19

No ironing here. We use Aldi non bio and dettol laundry cleaner on 30 then on a hanger/airer or radiator if can’t be tumbled or in the tumble if can be tumbled. Stuff creases if it’s left to crease ime so a hard flick then dried flat or a hard flick and a clean fold if it’s from the tumble. Also storing in large piles/ stuffed wardrobes makes stuff crease too.

Just watch the telly, do something crafty and productive if you want to do something with your hands. Ironing is the adult equivalent of busy work.

thenightsky · 25/02/2018 13:19

to 2009 actually*

Lemongingertea80 · 25/02/2018 13:22

I don't iron anything.

Are you expecting non ironed clothes to look like ironed clothes?

Perhaps you are more crease conscious than the rest of us who are happy to look slight scrumpled around the edges?

Tinkerbec · 25/02/2018 13:25

I didn’t even iron this.

I think it’s fine.

To ask how don't you iron?!?!
angieloumc · 25/02/2018 13:28

I hate ironing but I do iron most things apart from towels, underwear. In summer I don't iron bedding if it's been on the line but in winter give it a quick once over after tumbling.
My mum stopped ironing after many years of doing so when she was ill with cancer; I did her ironing several times but she didn't like the way I ironed 😳
I don't judge anyone who doesn't iron at all but for myself I can't stand wrinkles on my clothes.

DenPerry · 25/02/2018 13:41

Maybe you need to lower your standards! Grin I have always washed on 40, then hung on the airer and they look fine. Recently got a tumble dryer and garden with washing line and they do look better, but still think they're fine on the airer.
Life is too short to iron (unless you really enjoy it like some people do)

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/02/2018 14:14

I find that if I take things straight out of the tumble dryer and fold them they're fine, even if I leave it 2-3 days to get them out of the dryer. But as soon as they're disturbed in any way, they crease. So if DC opens drier, takes his work clothes out, and leaves the rest, when I come to empty the rest, they're creased. Anyone else had this?
