Rinsing

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 14:46

Growing up we never had a dishwasher and my mum would always rinse the soap off the dishes after washing them. Had a dishwasher for the last 10 years so never thought anymore about it. Now I don't have one and I've been rinsing the dishes after washing them. Was away with friends earlier this week and after washing the dishes they put them straight on the drainer then put them away when dry. Am I being ridiculous to rinse the soap off?!

I rinse, although we use unperfumed washing up liquid, soapy plates don't appeal and the marks of bubbles on the rims of glasses look awful if they are left to dry and not dried with a tea towel.

I have a drainer thingy from Joseph Joseph which you fill with plates and things and dunk into a sink of clean water. It is also good as a drained on the draining board.

It is the size of a (wash & drain) washing up bowl, not sure if it is still made and like this www.coggles.com/kitchen-accessories/joseph-joseph-wash-and-drain-plus-washing-up-caddy-white/green/11482437.html?affil=thggpsad&switchcurrency=GBP&shippingcountry=GB&thg_ppc_campaign=71700000025197852%22&gclid=Cj0KCQiA_JTUBRD4ARIsAL7_VeWGF1R_D1jubGENUY6Bi03JkFrXox9nCk43sMwmfT2IX4cM-GOeQw8aAqcBEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds&dclid=CPyCxc26qNkCFZOE7QodU3oOfw

Ooops sorry about the huge link!

Queenoftheblitz · 15/02/2018 17:42

We should all rinse in really hot water. The lather of washing up liquid picks up the grease and dirt and holds onto it. If you dont rinse properly, bacteria stays on the plate.

Ssw1 · 15/02/2018 17:48

I have a dishwasher which came with the rented house ( ive never used it in the 4 years I've been here).

I wash all my dishes under running water with fairy liquid. I never fill the sink.

getoffMNandgotobed · 15/02/2018 18:04

Slightly off topic, but my Serbian ex-flatmate used to 'wash' cutlery by putting it in a glass of water, because "that's how we did it during the war".

Had to remind her that it was 2007 and we were not at war, or in Serbia.

Rinse, OP!

Charley50 · 15/02/2018 19:02

I rinse and air dry. Can't bear tea towels (mine are always dirty Blush)

BMW6 · 15/02/2018 19:10

I don't have a dishwasher. When washed dishes etc are stacked in the rack I pour hot water from the kettle over it all, carefully so it doesn't splash everywhere.

bluebells1 · 15/02/2018 19:11

must rinse! My mum didn't but nan did. I follow my nan.

ChocFudgeLover · 15/02/2018 19:17

No I dont rinse. I don't rinse myself after a bubble bath either Grin

honeyroar · 15/02/2018 19:21

Yes I rinse. Plates, hair, body, the lot! It doesn't waste much water if you're careful (was brought up on well water, so never waste it!)

Trundle13 · 15/02/2018 19:25

I rinse, but to soothe my eco-conscience I fill a jug with water from the hot tap whilst the water is heating up, then use the water from the jug for rinsing as I go.

dementedma · 15/02/2018 19:29

who rinses themselves after a bath?
Get out, get dried.

Ljlsmum · 15/02/2018 19:35

I rinse as I go but not so much cos of the bubbles but because of the gritty particles of food hanging around in the water. The dishes still look dirty to me -so I rinse.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 15/02/2018 19:40

I have literally only ever heard of people rinsing dishes on here. Never seen anyone do it in real life. Ditto washing towels after a single use.

MotherofaSurvivor · 15/02/2018 19:46

Shotsfired Are you actually joking? MN Law? My best friend used to not rinse and ended up with toxic shock syndrome and made her toddler very very poorly. This was 11 years ago. Nothing to do with Mumsnet!!!!! How disgusting. READ THE BACK OF THE BOTTLE!!!!!!

IsaidMrDarcynotArsey · 15/02/2018 19:53

You don’t need two sinks to rinse. You need one washing up bowl with the warm rinse water in. ( I would also use a washing up bowl in sink for the task of washing items too : softer landing for delicate items and more water efficient. ) Next you will be telling me other people dont wash in a fixed order : glasses, cups, cutlery, serving dishes, plates, pots and pans. Natural air drying. This is why I love my dishwasher.

AnyUsernameWillDo75 · 15/02/2018 19:54

glasses, cups, cutlery, serving dishes, plates, pots and pans

yes this is the right order Grin

norfolkenclue · 15/02/2018 19:55

I'm very confused about the bath/rinse thing. Surely you get in your nice deep bubble bath, read your book until you look like a prune, get out and wrap yourself in a huge fluffy towel...no? 😳 I've literally never heard of ANYONE rinsing/showering AFTER this luxury! (They don't do it on the telly-box either!)

MotherofaSurvivor · 15/02/2018 20:22

I love it when British people complain about 'water waste' it goes back into the bloody system you fools! 🤦🏼‍♀️ It doesn't go into sodding Landfill! If on a water meter you'd have to waste a serious amount for it to add a lot onto your bills! 🙄🙄🙄

MotherofaSurvivor · 15/02/2018 20:24

The water that goes down your drains goes into the sea.... The water is naturally vaporised. Rain. Reservoirs. Water works. Back into system!!!!

norfolkenclue · 15/02/2018 21:22

@MotherofaSurvivor I'm guessing they mean 'waste' as in they are paying for it, as most people are now on a water metre. Unlike years ago, when we just paid a standard 'water charge'. Not sure though 💁‍♀️ but that would be my first thought, all that water literally flowing down the drain in 💷's 😲

MotherofaSurvivor · 15/02/2018 21:25

As I said, that hardly makes a difference to a water meter! I know a window cleaner who is on a water meter and uses his own water for his entire business. Pays same as me!

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/02/2018 21:26

But it takes resources to process it. It doesn't go straight from the reservoirs into the taps. And there are still shortages in the summer.

brownelephant · 15/02/2018 21:30

yanbu
I hate to eat of soapy dishes. it does leave a certain taste

Urubu · 15/02/2018 21:31

@norfolkenclue @cardibach ok ok maybe I am weird Blush after a bath I pull the plug and while the water empties I stand in the tub and do a quick rinse with water from the shower handle, very quick like 15-30sec but just enough to remove the foam of me.
