Rinsing

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 14:46

Growing up we never had a dishwasher and my mum would always rinse the soap off the dishes after washing them. Had a dishwasher for the last 10 years so never thought anymore about it. Now I don't have one and I've been rinsing the dishes after washing them. Was away with friends earlier this week and after washing the dishes they put them straight on the drainer then put them away when dry. Am I being ridiculous to rinse the soap off?!

Ah right, ok @Urubu. Each to their own. Not weird...I'd just never heard of that, hence my confusion. But if it makes you feel fabulous, go for it! 💕 I couldn't be bothered...once I'm done, I'm done (and I'm a lazy arse 😂)

cardibach · 15/02/2018 21:45

Mother this: Shotsfired Are you actually joking? MN Law? My best friend used to not rinse and ended up with toxic shock syndrome and made her toddler very very poorly. This was 11 years ago. Nothing to do with Mumsnet!!!!! How disgusting. READ THE BACK OF THE BOTTLE!!!!!! seems a little hysterical. I’ve never rinsed a dish in my life, and I can’t think of anyone who does - I’ve helped a fair few friends wash up over the years. If this were common - or indeed an actual thing at all - surely one of us would have been ill? Or someone we know?

Ohyesiam · 15/02/2018 22:00

I do everything I can to reduce the chemical load in our bodies.

GreasyFryUp · 15/02/2018 22:18

Never rinse apart from wine glasses but use a mild vegetable based liquid not the harsh chemical based ones such as Fairy which I find does leave an unpleasant residue (as well as being shit for the environment)

Earlyup · 15/02/2018 22:38

glasses, cups, cutlery, serving dishes, plates, pots and pans

yes this is the right order*

Ah well, at least I do something right even if I'm a lazy, dirty, illness-inducing non-rinser Grin

Glumglowworm · 15/02/2018 22:44

Definitely rinse!

I was in an anthropology class a decade or more ago and there was light hearted competitive discussion between the Spanish teacher, a Portuguese student and a Greek student over who as a nation rinsed their dishes more. They all thought brits were gross for not rinsing. (To be fair, if they were basing this on students, well students are pretty gross in general)

Crispbutty · 15/02/2018 22:48

I've never rinsed and neither did my mum. And I have no intention of starting now.

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 16/02/2018 06:43

I really hope none of you are my friends, you're all (non-rinsing) mingers Grin

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 16/02/2018 06:54

I have never rinsed.... I have no intention of starting now.

spiney · 16/02/2018 07:36

Well, toxic shock from not rinsing. Heard it all.

spiney · 16/02/2018 07:37

I do rinse glasses or else they can get smeary. But the restHmm

crumbsinthecutlerydrawer · 16/02/2018 07:55

I rinse mine once they’re all on the drainer, boil the kettle and then (carefully) pour it over the lot. I expect that’s a massive waste of energy but they’re all nice and squeaky clean.

I’ve never had a dishwasher and dm never rinsed the dishes when I was living at home. I always thought glasses etc in my friends houses with dishwashers felt different and put it down to the tablets but I think it was just that they were actually clean of residue.

WhiteWalkersWife · 16/02/2018 08:25

I rinse but on the occasion ive forgot its still been okay. My pil dont and their stuff often tastes soapy (they could only taste it after being on holiday for a month). Pil do use a hell of a lot of washing up liquid though, the water goes green.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/02/2018 09:57

I can only assume that those of you that can taste soap on your dishes and utensils if you don’t rinse are using washing up liquid directly on the thing you’re washing and not diluting in a sink or washing up bowl?

Like I said up thread, I only rinse if I want to use the thing I’ve washed immediately - but actually I rinse before I wash most things. If of course it hasn’t gone in the dishwasher!

ThomasShelbysBunnet · 16/02/2018 10:12

I had a childhood friend whose family only rinsed their plates. No soapy water, no sink run, just a rinse under the tap.

OverTheMountain42 · 16/02/2018 10:17

Rinse the plates first. Put soap on a scrubber, scrub plate/cup etc then rinse soap off. Tap running the whole time. I was taught this by my dad who is 80.

I do rinse under the shower if I have a bath or I will shower first, I do the same for my ds, how can you be clean sat in your own dirty water? I rarely have a bath though, just shower.

I'm not remotely OCD either this just seems common sense to me.

ShotsFired · 16/02/2018 10:18

@ThomasShelbysBunnet I had a childhood friend whose family only rinsed their plates. No soapy water, no sink run, just a rinse under the tap.

Just save time and get a dog. They'll clean them thoroughly.

flirtygirl · 16/02/2018 10:30

I always thought this was cultural, all my non brit and non white friends rinse and all my white brit friends dont rinse.

I dont eat at most peoples house and say no even to drinks as the no rinse and dirty teatowel thing and too many things getting washed in dishwashers really puts me off.

I only eat at close family houses or people who i know do the same as me which is rinse if handwashing and leave to air dry and only food items for humans go onto the dishwaaher.

No pet items, no toilet brushes and no moon cups.

flirtygirl · 16/02/2018 10:32

Other cultures do shower after a bath or before, americans and japanese in particular think the british are gross.

Sitting in bath water and then just getting out.

Clandestino · 16/02/2018 10:36

Rinsing is a must. I normally use a bowl or a dirty pot when I am not using the dishwasher, fill it with hot water and fairy ultra and, clean the dishes and stack them on the side. Then I rinse all of them under the water tap. I can't imagine not rinsing the dishes, yuck. You still get lots of the washing liquid on them.

NutElla5x · 16/02/2018 10:45

I never rinse, except for maybe the odd glass. As long as you don't go overboard with the washing up liquid it's fine.

DaisyDrip · 16/02/2018 10:46

Another rinser here. I don't use a washing up bowl or put the plug in, just rinse, wash with scour sponge and washing up liquid, rinse then put on the rack to air dry.

Tinkerbec · 16/02/2018 11:17

My parents don’t rinse either. Never been ill but it does wind me up a bit as it doesn’t look tidy and seems a bit gross.

namechangefailed · 16/02/2018 11:34

Whatever is happening to your dishes, is happening to your insides when you don't rinse. Why would you want to ingest detergent? Have those who don't rinse their dishes ever read the ingredients on the back of the bottle?

NutElla5x · 16/02/2018 11:42

You're right namechange,I will tell my 98yr old nan that she'd better start rinsing or she could be digging herself an early grave!
