Rinsing

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 14:46

Growing up we never had a dishwasher and my mum would always rinse the soap off the dishes after washing them. Had a dishwasher for the last 10 years so never thought anymore about it. Now I don't have one and I've been rinsing the dishes after washing them. Was away with friends earlier this week and after washing the dishes they put them straight on the drainer then put them away when dry. Am I being ridiculous to rinse the soap off?!

@NutElla5x what's your grandmother got to do with anything? I don't want to ingest chemicals no matter how old your gran is Confused

ArsenicNLace · 16/02/2018 11:48

I rinse too? Isn't that one of the reasons people have double sinks?

ConfusedLivingDoll · 16/02/2018 11:57

As a foreigner I, of course, rinse. DP is a disgusting Brit no rinser. Bleeuuurgh...

I also shower after baths to get the lingering soap and grime off.

FizzyGreenWater · 16/02/2018 12:24

It's nothing to do with tasting it!

Have a read of the ingredients on the back of your detergent bottle. Now imagine a fine film of dried scum containing those chemicals and bleaching agents on every plate...every dish... every fork...in every cup. Tiny amounts ingested and going through your system every day for years and years.

What's that about cancer rates rising and rising and environmental factors being cited?

I rinse, so my plates are clean. As opposed to covered with a fine film of chemicals and food particles and left for them to nicely dry on until washed into the next meal.

I was once at a friend's and given a mug of water. It was slimy on the outside with washing-up liquid to the extent my fingers left marks in it as I tried surreptitiously to rub it off the part my lips would touch. Envy

I opened up this thread expecting a way more exciting discussion about rinsing!! We rinse as DH believes the suds will guve us all cancer!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/02/2018 13:02

If you have a fine film of washing up liquid or scum on your dishes you are not washing up properly.

[[https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=6256.0 Most washing up liquids consist of molecules that have two ends.
One end loves to attach itself to water and the other end loves to attach itself to grease molecules. So when you give the dish a bit of a scrub in water all the grease hopefully comes off with the water you use to clean it.]]

That’s why you need to dilute in hot water, and change the water if you start noticing food clinging to the plates.

But, it actually bothers me not whether you rinse or not so carry on!

BlurryFace · 16/02/2018 13:25

Like hell anyone gets TSS from not rinsing their dishes, surely I am not the only person whose mum used neat Fairy to clean their mouth out after swearing?

The only friends I have vehemently pro-rinsing "don't want those chemicals in their body" while smoking like chimneys - doubt the washing up liquid would get them first.Grin

TheCatsPaws · 16/02/2018 13:31

Chemicals aren’t poison.

FloatyFlo · 16/02/2018 13:39

You're all bloody mad.

Showering after a bath? How dirty are you to not be clean after a bath? So over the top.

FloatyFlo · 16/02/2018 13:40

And TSS from washing up liquid?! Grin Alriiighttyy then...

Skiiltan · 16/02/2018 13:44

The late, great Miles Kington used to sound off about this all the time. He couldn't understand why British people assumed the residual detergent on dishes would magically evaporate as they drained. Of course they need to be rinsed.

Skiiltan · 16/02/2018 13:46

BlurryFace - surely I am not the only person whose mum used neat Fairy to clean their mouth out after swearing?

I very much hope you are.

Queenoftheblitz · 16/02/2018 13:49

The Japanese have a ritual of taking a shower before a bath. I often rinse myself off after a bath cos i've been lying in a bath of dirty water for half an hour.

I can't believe how many people don't rinse the washing up - you may as well not bother washing your plates - let the old food dry on it and use it again - cos that's what you're doing any way.
"Dirty beggers".

Skiiltan · 16/02/2018 13:55

My best friend used to not rinse and ended up with toxic shock syndrome and made her toddler very very poorly.
Jesus! That is some massive amount of bacterial toxins to have in dishwater. This sounds like a major public health incident. And if it's true I would assume the toxins got into her system through an open wound or burn, not by eating off unrinsed crockery.

BakedBeeeen · 16/02/2018 15:16

Wow, mumsnet has been a revelation today! Two things I have learned today - some people rinse things they have just washed, and also some people bleach their arse holes. Thanks mumsnet!

DerelictWreck · 16/02/2018 15:21

Toxic Shock Syndrome from not rinsing dishes Grin Grin Grin

This is why I bloody love mumsnet - it's absolutely bonkers

e1y1 · 16/02/2018 15:59

Because washing up liquid is already diluted in water - the same as shower gel is in the shower! You don't wash yourself in the shower with running water and soap, and then get back in again just under water!

That makes no sense, of course you rinse in the shower; wet body apply soap and scrub, then rinse.

Flirty, not sure what skin colour has to do with it, you could have just said non British and non British (you don’t know any black British people or white non British people?)

happymummy12345 · 16/02/2018 16:00

I wash them and put them down, then I rinse as I dry. I can not stand leaving dishes draining so mine are always dried and put away straight away.

brownelephant · 16/02/2018 16:08

I have a kefir culture.
it dies if put in a container that has not been rinsed of soap properly
