Rinsing

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 14:46

Growing up we never had a dishwasher and my mum would always rinse the soap off the dishes after washing them. Had a dishwasher for the last 10 years so never thought anymore about it. Now I don't have one and I've been rinsing the dishes after washing them. Was away with friends earlier this week and after washing the dishes they put them straight on the drainer then put them away when dry. Am I being ridiculous to rinse the soap off?!

My vet says you shouldn't put pet dishes in the dishwasher because the residue of the salt and bleach cleaners can give them mouth ulcers

That's interesting. I have a cat that's had a problem with a sore bottom lip and I always assumed that it was because he was a greedy fat bastard and he licked the residue out of the frying pan and he didn't always wait until it cooled down properly.

chapln wash in a bowl at the side of the sink, rinse as you go.

namechange2222 · 15/02/2018 15:26

Nope never rinsed except for saucepans
No one's ever complained in 40 years

Katedotness1963 · 15/02/2018 15:26

Never rinsed the dishes, just glasses.

TheCatsPaws · 15/02/2018 15:27

I have never rinsed my dishes. DP does and thinks I am a degenerate.

LemonBreeland · 15/02/2018 15:40

Hate when people don't rinse. I don't like to go and get a glass of water and for it to have bubbles on top.

DerelictWreck · 15/02/2018 15:43

Have never rinsed a thing in my life and nothing tastes sopey!

Mookie81 · 15/02/2018 15:45

Lol glad I'm not OCD! I fill a bowl with hot soapy water and wash all the bits. Then I run the tap and rinse everything then leave to dry on the drainer.
The breakfast crumpets did have an odd taste Grin

To the ones not rinsing: do you rinse your body after washing it? I imagine yes. Why is it different with dishes???

Because washing up liquid is already diluted in water - the same as shower gel is in the shower! You don't wash yourself in the shower with running water and soap, and then get back in again just under water!

Tarriance · 15/02/2018 15:50

I've not got a dishwasher but what is the point in getting one if you need to rinse the dishes by hand anyway

Tarriance · 15/02/2018 15:51

Oh no, I've completely misunderstood! Never mind.

Earlyup · 15/02/2018 15:51

So do you all have two sinks? Or run the tap after washing each plate? Or run the tap continuously??!

I only ever rinse glasses so that they don't get a soapy rim.

Birdsgottafly · 15/02/2018 15:54

Run the tap after each plate etc, do the cutlery a few at a time.

BarbaraofSevillle · 15/02/2018 15:56

You don't need to rinse if using a dishwasher, Tarriance, either before or after, you really don't.

I am wondering if modern appliances with their low water usage are rinsing inadequately though. Only yesterday, DP said something about switching from liquid to powder in the washing machine to save the plastic bottles, until I reminded him that the reason that we used liquids was that he moaned that there was powder residue on his clothes after washing.

So either we need an extra rinse, or we use liquid. We could do an extra rinse but would have to remember to do it manually, as our washing machine doesn't have the feature built in. If it ever breaks (currently 12 YO and still going strong) we can make sure this feature is on the next one, although will probably be banned for water saving purposes.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 15/02/2018 15:58

Yeah I don’t rinse. Never have, never will.

Oh, I tell a lie. I rinse when I want to use the thing I’ve just washed immediately. Have literally never tasted soap on my food.

FuckyNellYaBastad · 15/02/2018 15:59

Grin soapy rim

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 15/02/2018 15:59

DH does this and it drives me nuts, but we're all still alive, so maybe washing up liquid isn't poisonous after all! Shock

TotHappy · 15/02/2018 16:03

Same as Diana . You run the tap after each plate?! Oh the water waste! Plus it would take twice as long.

Earlyup · 15/02/2018 16:09

I couldn't keep the tap running, that's a massive waste of water. I'll take the risk.

Urubu · 15/02/2018 16:31

Surely you don't step out of the shower the second you are done rubbing your body with shower gel? So for a certain amount of time you are standing under clear running water, ie rinsing yourself. No?
Maybe a better example is a bath: you run a bath of clear water, soak yourself, wash your body: stepping out at this point without a rinse / a shower is the equivalent of not rinsing dishes, you are covered in soap residue and dirt diluted in water.

Pumpkintopf · 15/02/2018 16:31

Definitely rinse!! No question.

Birdsgottafly · 15/02/2018 16:33

You just put the tap on to rinse, not just running. If you're in the UK, as said, it isn't really a waste of water.

Topseyt · 15/02/2018 17:03

You don't keep the tap running. Turn it on briefly to quickly rinse each item, and off again.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 15/02/2018 17:11

Rinse if air dry. No rinse if towel dry. Thought everyone knew that.

cardibach · 15/02/2018 17:13

Urubu you’ve confused me with your bath example. I rarely bath now as I prefer a shower, but rinsing after a bath? What? How would you do that? Run a whole other one while you shiver? Nip across the room/to another room to shower?
