No need to go further into your reasoning if you don't want to but this has always a been curious issue to me and came up today with one of my colleagues. She is a feminist by how she described her beliefs but doesn't actually adopt the term.

OP posts:

And, Theglobe, if you really think it’s appropriate to turn this vital, tragic issue into part of some pathetic personal vendetta then, frankly, you disgust me.

EC22 · 11/02/2018 16:36

Yes

IncyWincyGrownUp · 11/02/2018 16:36

I’m with Bertrand on this, and that happens quite rarely. Nobody else has the right to decide for a woman what is OK and what is not where her body is concerned, to say that they do is to admit an inequality and feminism to me is about parity between men and women.

Theglobe · 11/02/2018 16:42

Personal vendetta? It’s the first time I’ve addressed you.

Hastalapasta · 11/02/2018 16:43

Yes.

EmotionalSupportTortoise · 11/02/2018 16:47

Thanks Smile. That is OK- we can disagree. You are entitled to your views.

TheGlobe thanks. I cannot apologise for my views BUT I realise not everybody shares them .If I have caused any offence, then I apologise.

SmileEachDay · 11/02/2018 17:03

We can, Emotional.

I’d suggest you think about the many women on here who will read your posts, which include graphic and inaccurate descriptions of abortions who will feel just a bit more judged about their decision.

MrMeSeeks · 11/02/2018 17:17

Or read about how late term abortions are carried out. How babies have their bodies hacked to pieces. Do you think they don't feel pain?
Do you know when late term abortions are carried out?
The strict processes?
After certain week, there has to be a reason why it can be carried out ( not the mother has simply changed her mind)
Mental health, severe abnormalities, or risk to the mothers life.

marching around dressed like vulvas

And yet many people like to dress their little girls head to toe in pink. And most girls' clothes come in pink.
Just saying.

I'm actually more offended by 'its more traumatic being forced to have their rapists baby' than @emotionals graphic details regarding abortions. You don't speak for all victims so don't state it as fact!!
My very first child was concieved through rape. She was not EVER my rapists baby, she was MY baby and it was a damn sight more fucking traumatic having ppl constantly tell me to kill her because I wouldn't be able to even look at her without reliving it and actually accusing me of lying than the rape itself was I can tell you that for a fact!!

SusanBunch · 11/02/2018 22:27

mommy sorry for what happened to you. I was not intending to speak for all victims at all. Emotional was saying that women who had been raped should be denied abortions. The point is they should be given a CHOICE. Some may decide to go ahead with a pregnancy, others will not. Particularly in the case of rape, it is barbaric to force women who have already been violated to give birth against their will. That was my point. It was certainly not a judgement against anyone who goes through with a pregnancy. Hope that is clear.

AhhhhThatsBass · 11/02/2018 22:32

Yes. (I shave my armpits though)

BertrandRussell

This is your game Bertrand.
Bertrand: Why would anyone not want to be a feminist?
Others: "The association of the the label is characterised by batshit extremes. I do believe in the equality of all people. I don't want to have to keep explaining to everyone that I am not that kind. I would just rather believe what I believe without adopting suggesting I want to associate myself with extremISTs(as happens in EVERY IST movement).

Bertrand; Give me an example of something extreme?

Others: Several examples given of what makes the feminist "brand" so shit

Bertrand: Basing your rejection of feminism on something Linda Bellos did in the 1980s and a journalist's think piece about all PIV being rape. Funny how nobody ever comes up with any new "ridiculous feminist ideas". It's always the same ones

Repeat ad nauseaum

Bertrand's Logic: Basing your rejection of fascism on something Hitler did in the 1930s and a journalist's think piece about all Jews being evil. Funny how nobody ever comes up with any new ridiculous fascist ideas. It's always the same ones.

Er yeah. Yes it is. Femininism is "brand" and it is in the toilet mainly because of people like you

That's the price you pay for associating yourself with ANY kind of "IST" label. There is a difference between a Muslim and an "IslamIST". There is a different between someone who believes in a more equal society, the welfare system and a SocialIST. The latter denoting a more vocal, strident, sometimes extreme militancy.

I would rather believe what I believe (fairness and equality) without adopting your silly label and all the shitty historical baggage associated with it. I don't want my friends and family to be second guessing whether or not I am going to do a cats bum face just because my cousin decides to wear white on her wedding day, has my uncle walk her down the aisle and takes her husband's name.

TheGoldenBowl · 12/02/2018 07:16

Yes, I'm a feminist.

I find all the wishy-washy, "but not that sort" really, really pathetic.

Do you want equaĺ rights for women? It's a yes or no sort of thing.

You can sort out the finer points later. I'm not going to assume that I'll agree with every single feminist idea ever - and it's ludicrous to suggest any feminist should have to

Let's face it, women have been controlled, abused, raped, belittled and mocked by men on a massive scale for MILLENNIA. To start saying "Ooh, it's gone too far" a mere one hundred years after women got the vote is just fucking ridiculous.

The media has done a tremendous job of sullying the name of feminism. And you've fallen for it.

But if you can't see that... Well, I'm not going to call you stupid, but if the cap fits...

SusanBunch · 12/02/2018 07:29

Basing your rejection of fascism on something Hitler did in the 1930s and a journalist's think piece about all Jews being evil. Funny how nobody ever comes up with any new ridiculous fascist ideas. It's always the same ones.*

Maybe because fascism as a movement sorta died down after world war 2... Funny that. Although have you heard of neo-nazis and neo-fascists? Maybe a better example would be e.g. the Labour party. Everyone agrees that its current position and policies don't bear much resemblance to those it had 100 years ago. All political movements evolve.

If you broadly believe in equality, you must surely believe in taking actions to enable an oppressed group to achieve equality. That is essentially what feminism is and what feminists want. Linda Bellos wasn't representative of all feminists even in the 1980s. Why pick on her and not a more liberal feminist?

SusanBunch · 12/02/2018 07:32

all the shitty historical baggage associated with it

All the shit like getting the vote, equal pay legislation, non-discrimination legislation, abolition of marital rape, the ability to have degrees conferred, being allowed to enter the medical/legal professions. Such a load of shitty historical baggage. Maybe those women should have just thought 'nah, can't be fucked' rather than getting heckled, imprisoned, and even killed for their cause.
