No need to go further into your reasoning if you don't want to but this has always a been curious issue to me and came up today with one of my colleagues. She is a feminist by how she described her beliefs but doesn't actually adopt the term.

Egalitarianism doesn't equal equality for both sexes.

I will be honest and admit I spent a long time declaring myself not a feminist and thinking it to be anti-men and and just a bunch of bra burning middle class women with nothing better to do.

But I have subsequently changed that view. I have really spent a lot of time looking into it and my view has changed.

Some labels are legally or medically necessary, some are not and are just in place to please society.
By definition my DD10 is a Tomboy, defined as 'a girl who enjoys rough, noisy activities traditionally associated with boys.' Sure technically she is a tomboy but its not a label she needs to accept, to us its a completely pointless label and she doesn't need to go around calling herself a tomboy in order to enjoy rough, noisy activities traditionally associated with boys.
Equally you can accept the definition of feminism, you can want 'advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes.' but not accept the label of being a feminist, its not legally or medically necessary to do so, I don't want to be associated with so much of what feminism and being a feminist has become and I can continue to technically be a by definition a feminist I can continue to believe in and fight for equality between sexes without accepting what I view as polluted and meaningless label.

any large group you might belong to is going to have a range of opinions, not all of which you have to agree with to classify as part of the group

@rollon I think that equality for woman has both gone too far AND has a way to go depending on what we are talking about, ie women being treated better than men and having more rights than men is too far however things like women's razors being more expensive than men's just cos they're pink or tampon tax is not far enough.

An example of men being treated as less than? The opinion (that is gaining popularity at a scary rate) that ALL men are or have the ability to be sexual preditors. Or how if man goes out on a date with woman and they both get drunk then go somewhere and have sex, woman can't consent therefore is a victim of rape. (men can't consent either so he is equally a victim).
just 2 of many examples.

Any1 who identifies as a specific gender is that gender. none of this But they don't have women bits... Well I don't have women bits (ie a womb or ovaries) anymore so does that mean I'm not a woman??

And yes a woman may have the LEGAL right to have as many terminations as she wants and I am not saying terminations are evil etc when they are done for good honest reasons but that doesn't make it morally right, for example to have 3 in a year to then deliberately get pregnant just 2 months after the last one when nothing has changed in ur life/circumstances. Or to say oh fuck the pill/coil/rod/jab I'll just have an abortion it's MY RIGHT

No

Bloopbleep · 09/02/2018 23:59

Very much yes. Took me a while to realise my understanding of what feminism was, was completely wrong so I didn’t always use the label. The aims of the movement however, I have always supported and am happy to cal myself a feminist now

but

Not A Mumsnet Feminist Grin

What's one of them then?

Have you read the FWR threads on here?

Can you find a more diverse, robust discussion forum anywhere?

And, yes I am, another one more and more as I get older.
