AIBU to rage at knicker gussets - or is it me? (lighthearted!)

First off, by knicker gussets I mean the double fabric bit that covers your under-carriage. And I've always presumed it has the cottony bit to be kind to your delicate areas and catch the odd drop of fanny juice that may leak out.

Well, my anatomy seems to be that anything liquid that you'd want to be caught in your knickers winds its way through all my labia, to exit at the front. This means it misses the gusset and hits the flimsy fabric - so it's visible. Is that just me it happens to? Am I an outlier, or have all knicker manufacturers got womens' anatomy wrong for all this time?

While this has never been a significant problem up to now, aside from careful positioning of sanitary towels during periods, it's now an issue thanks to peri-menopoause causing my fanny to get quite runny. I really don't want to have to wear panty liners every single day (hot and itchy), but I do because otherwise I'll be washing knickers AND trousers every day and I generally get a 2-3 days wear out of my trousers.

Anyone else? Blush

I've been raging about this for ages. Good to know I'm not alone. I've never figured out why the gusset is so far back, thought I must be deformed! Read an interview with Sharleen Spiteri (Texas singer) where she was lamenting the fact she can't find pants that fit and she would love to design a range - I wish she would!

LondonHuffyPuffy · 10/01/2018 13:23

Just think of the smell and mess in history when people didn't change clothes that often

Google "sootikin", alotalot ... only not on a work or shared computer

ProperLavs · 10/01/2018 15:12

Today I very sadly looked at all my knicker gussets. I have fanny bleached them in exactly the same spot; in the middle and to the left edge. If I have period leakage it’s always there too.
How fascinating that up until now I have NEVER wondered why my knickers are all bleached in the middle.

Zaphodsotherhead · 10/01/2018 15:20

I thought knickers went through just above the gusset because of my iron-wool pubes. I'm a 'gusset catcher', but still go through pants right at the front and above the gusset.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 10/01/2018 16:27

...because of my iron-wool pubes.

Grin My DH has this problem too! His pants always wear through in the lower crotch area, under the button-fly bit. You could use his balls for Brillo pads.

spangles1963 · 10/01/2018 17:08

Thankfully I don't have to deal with sanitary towels any more as I'm post-menopausal,but I do recall having to position sanitary towels further forward than I thought should be necessary in order to prevent leakage.

SoupDragon · 10/01/2018 17:44

One bonus of using a gusset extending pant liner is that it minimises camel toe.

TheGirlWithAllTheFeathers · 10/01/2018 17:58

Me too. It's just in the wrong place for me.

Funko · 10/01/2018 18:01

london I hate you.

I am cooking dinner Envy

WetsTheVet · 10/01/2018 18:02

I'm surprised how many women wear pads! I genuinely thought they were mostly only used by younger girls or post birth.

The gusset leak is actually the first thing on MN I don't get. Get all the other tmi weird body stuff that crops up on here, but my juices seem to flow straight Hmm

EggysMom · 10/01/2018 18:29

I know that when I was younger - much younger! - I used to 'leak' centrally to the gusset of my knickers.

Now I'm peri-menopausal, I definitely leak to the front like the OP. I doubt that gussets have moved, so it's something to do with me (weight gain / child-bearing / age).

And I not only turn winged pads the wrong way round, but I buy the long ones and turn those the wrong way round so as to catch most blood.

DragonNoodleCake · 10/01/2018 20:03

I only use - bodyform long pads for this very reason. Also I'm trying to wean my myself off long liners everyday so now I am using the teeny tiny Ines just at the front of the gusset. I totally agree OP!

Babybauble · 10/01/2018 20:27

Ok, so what about bikinis, I don't have this problem when I wear them?! My first beech holiday and I was slightly concerned I'd have a wet patch appear whilst sunbathing. But knickers I definitely get wet patches just above the gusset hmm

North-East of gusset leaker here.
Slight tangent...does anyone else have to, erm, steer when they pee? I've done this for as long as I can remember, but on my wedding day I happened to mention to someone how difficult it was to hold the dress with one hand and steer with the other and they looked at me as if I'd completely lost my mind.
If I don't direct the flow, it basically comes out horizontally and hits the loo door. Anyone else got this problem..?

isthismylifenow · 11/01/2018 07:16

Cannot say I have had any aiming or steering issues Poisoning. But perhaps there is still hope for me yet.

picklemepopcorn · 11/01/2018 07:32

Never needed to steer, sorry!

MaximaDeWit · 11/01/2018 07:41

Me too ✋🏼

EggysMom · 11/01/2018 18:24

The only 'steering' of pee that I know is when women want to train themselves to use a urinal instead of sitting/hovering on a toilet. (Don't ask me why I looked into this!) Apparently it can help if you put fingers either side and steer upwards slightly to control the aim.

So poisoningpidgeys have you ever thought that this might be a useful trick you can perform?

ConkerGame · 11/01/2018 19:26

I too have the gusset issue! So glad to hear it's not just me but tbh have always assumed the knicker manufacturers got it wrong for many women! Why on earth aren't they making ones that actually work?! How has nobody pointed this out to them before? Maybe just as too embarrassed to mention moist undercarriage? Blush

poisoningpidgeysinthepark · 11/01/2018 23:10

Ha ha Eggy, I could probably use a urinal hands free! They usually stink though.

sashadjas · 12/01/2018 06:23

Clearly knicker-gusset designers have never heard of capillary action (please Google if you've forgotten biology lessons from school, I ain't got space to explain!), ever laid eyes on a normal flange i.e. one not spread across a porn couch, or heard of a "front bottom" and realised that means the crack goes all t' way around!
Btw, fucking cryingggg at this thread...

Oh ffs apologies, got impatient lol. @IrkThePurist a bleached gusset means your fluids are quite acidic, I found out years ago and that was a revelation I can tell you...!
