Bar or Liquid soap?

Which do most people use?

I assumed that liquid soap to wash hands and shower gel to wash was more hygienic as I heard that used bar soap contained bacteria. And also thought bar soap caused dry skin.

But seen in another thread a lot of people are reverting to bar soap.

So what do most people use and what is best for dry skin?

Best for dry skin is no soap at all, it is the soap itself (pretty highly alkaline) that has the drying effect, so something like Dove is better.
I use coal tar soap sometimes (I have eczema and very sensitive skin) but prefer liquid cos it's just less messy and less likely to end up manky, dropped on the floor/in the bath/in the sink/covered in hairs or fluff.
If bacteria worries you that much, get antic-bac liquid soap or purelle type rub for after washing.

Bar. Environmentally better. Get the right one and it's fine for dry skin. Can't be germy btw.

esk1mo · 06/01/2018 01:59

liquid 100%.

DramaAlpaca · 06/01/2018 01:59

Liquid because it's less messy.

I own a soap making company. A bar of soap is better for your skin. A well made bar is actually good for your skin. Healthy skin doesn’t care about what PH the soap is.

Liquid soap is full of chemicals and no actual soap.

Soap cleans your skin because it is Alkaline. A “neutral” like dove has less cleaning ability.

After years of using shower gel I’ve gone back to using imperial leather in the shower. I smell like my granny but I liked the way she used to smell Grin

Soap lasts much longer than a bottle of shower gel too.

Liquid shower gel and liquid hand soap

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 06/01/2018 02:09

Liquid 'soap' with antibacterial bollocks in it are unnecessary and very drying (triclosans)

Actually liquid soap is fine. Simple bar of soap is better.

RedWineAllMine · 06/01/2018 02:23

Dove soap and shower gel dry my skin out. It's a shame as I love the clean smell of it.

RedastheRose · 06/01/2018 02:25

Bar of soap, much better for the environment all round than plastic bottles

loobybear · 06/01/2018 02:30

I use bars for environmental reasons. I use pure olive oil soap as my skin feels great when I use it and it doesn't dry my skin out at all.

Kursk · 06/01/2018 02:32

Olive oil soap is very mild soap, but I don’t make it because it takes a year to cure.

I use bars of soap in the shower - have three on the go, so I can pick and choose which I prefer each day (currently have got Dr Bronner Green Tea, Body Shop Grapefruit and also Body Shop British Rose).

Use handsoap at the sink.

Roystonv · 06/01/2018 03:20

Gone back to bar for shower and basin lasts ages, some lovely scents (try t k maxx for beautiful ones with lovely packaging at a good price) and environmentally friendly. Just use w up liquid at kitchen sink!

WrittenandGrown · 06/01/2018 03:51

Bar soap. Shower gel doesn’t really clean (IMO).

squoosh · 06/01/2018 06:03

The bar of soap thing is like a cult on Mumsnet.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 06/01/2018 06:06

Liquid soap all the way.

If someone has a bar of soap at their house, I’d rather not wash my hands than use that.

Mablethorpe · 06/01/2018 06:42

Bar - use Dove.

Recently switched from liquid as could never find a hand wash that everyone liked the smell of!

MrsZippyLake · 06/01/2018 08:03

Liquid soap doesn't seem to get me as clean as a bar of soap. Though prefer liquid for hands.

kaytee87 · 06/01/2018 08:07

Where do you all keep your bars of soap so they don't get scum everywhere?

Spartaca · 06/01/2018 08:11

Bar. Less plastic.

londonrach · 06/01/2018 08:12

In shower bar as liquid doesnt work. Love the bars i get in france but if ive run out (which i have at the moment as last in france 3 years ago i use dove). londonrach · 06/01/2018 08:13

Kay...in a tin when not in use waiting to be used. Soap dish in shower

CandyMelts · 06/01/2018 08:17

Just switched to bar for environmental reasons, have a lovely gingerbread one from yorkshire shop company on the go at the moment - smells amazing

c75kp0r · 06/01/2018 08:18

Bar for environmental reasons. Husband insists on using carex - I hate the smell though.
