Bar or Liquid soap?

noenergy · 06/01/2018 01:50

Which do most people use?

I assumed that liquid soap to wash hands and shower gel to wash was more hygienic as I heard that used bar soap contained bacteria. And also thought bar soap caused dry skin.

But seen in another thread a lot of people are reverting to bar soap.

So what do most people use and what is best for dry skin?

Another vote for bar in shower and liquid at sinks, especially as DS still in nappies.

mustbemad17 · 06/01/2018 09:25

Liquid at the sink, far less mess & easier for DD to manage. We have the Dettol no touch ones so more hygienic too.
Soap bar in the bath/shower, so much better for skin. DD has sensitive skin so we use Dove or the tar soap. Always have a spare bar for guests too!

DailyFailAreCunts · 06/01/2018 09:31

I want to use soap in the shower, but have a medical condition that means my hands can sometimes go a bit shaky and if I dropped it I could fall over picking it up.
Is there any type of holder about, like soap on a rope but reusable that would work?

Pfftkids · 06/01/2018 09:32

I've used an olive oil bar from Holland and Barrett on my face for years now. It leaves my skin so soft and smooth feeling, I won't use anything else

Albertschair · 06/01/2018 09:32

What do you guys mean that shower gel doesn't work in the shower?

Squirt a bit on a flannel or pouffe and scrub body - foam up and then rinse off.

meredintofpandiculation · 06/01/2018 09:32

I have both liquid and bar at every basin, sink, bath or shower. Basically because family have different preferences. Bar soap for face, but I rinse it off really well. I keep a stash of bar soaps in with the clean bed linen so when I change the sheets the bed the pillowcases smell wonderful.

To the person who said Tkmaxx for soap - I've been really disappointed - they're wrapped nicely, and small wonderful when you open them, but it's almost as if the scent is sprayed on afterwards - once you start using the soap, it loses its smell. I've gone back to posh English soap.

Is there any type of holder about, like soap on a rope but reusable that would work? You used to be able to get bath sponges which had a soap inside. You could replace the soap when it was finished. You could tray making yourself an envelope out of sponge material, with a bit of a flap (like a pillowcase) so the soap didn't just fall out.

Bar as cheaper

rothbury · 06/01/2018 09:44

Bar in shower - I bought some Pears the other day which made me very nostalgic. This thread has reminded me how much I love the smell of coal tar!! Liquid at sinks.

Bar lasts longer, is better for environment and cheaper.

mirime · 06/01/2018 09:44

We have the Dettol no touch ones so more hygienic too.

Not really, given that you touch the bottle before washing your hands.

DailyFailAreCunts · 06/01/2018 09:51

I just found these 'EcoBags Soap Bags' I think will work on amazon, guess it depends if I can put the drawstring over my hand if it's long enough.

Nousernameforme · 06/01/2018 10:01

I've switched to bar soap after the last thread we get the green pears one. It's lovely and you smell clean ages after using it. It isn't as drying as i remember the sheild soap of my childhood being. I use it on my face and then moisturise straight after and it seems to be tightening my face up. DP came home from a busy kitchen shift the other day and still smelled of soap. Plus two bars at 70p each lasts us over a week.

I'm not finding a problem with manky soap marks either ours lives on the side of the bath and i don't know if its the type of soap or the fact that we don't leave it dripping in water but none of that gooey white stuff you used to get either.

It's cleaner, cheaper, lasts longer and is environmentally friendly.

heateallthebuns · 06/01/2018 10:03

Liquid. Bar soap seems so slimy and germy since most people have switched to liquid.

LadyPenelope68 · 06/01/2018 10:03

rothbury Pears is the favourite in our house with everyone from me to teenage boys, love the stuff. I use bar at the sink as well, but if you want liquid soap, Pears do one as well!

DuruttiColumnist · 06/01/2018 10:06

I was just recounting my experience, bit harsh to say it was ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous to say that only 2 weeks after changing to bar soap and one staph infection later, I changed back to liquid. It's quite possible it wasn't the bar soap, but I have bad memories of my mum being unable to rid the house of a staph infection when we were kids.

Tippz · 06/01/2018 10:07

Liquid.

Haven't used a 'bar' of soap this decade.

TheFairyCaravan · 06/01/2018 10:14

We use liquid in the shower and sinks but I’ve used Dove bars on your face for years. I’m going to start trying it on my body. My face is never dry but I’ve got patches of dry skin all over me.

I’ve got shed loads of soap and shower gel to use up but if it works I’ll change back to bars.

k2p2k2tog · 06/01/2018 10:20

We use a combination of liquid for handwashing and I'm switching over to soap in the shower. Mainly because the quantity of plastic bottles we're throwing away as a country is appalling, but I also think that soap makes you feel cleaner.

Lostmyemailaddress · 06/01/2018 10:21

I've used bars for the past year or too I also use bar shampoo and conditioner. I used to have problems with my hair and doing when I used liquids. My dc are starting to use them as they prefer the smell and 2 get rashes with most shower gels so the others are finishing up the stash that there is in as not to waste it but even my teenagers have asked for bars now.

StilettosAreANoNo · 06/01/2018 10:28

Very nice bars of soap for washing me. Everyone else in family likes shower gels. I hate them as I find them slimey and hard to control.

Liquid soap by the sinks for hands though as less messy.

Chh03 · 06/01/2018 10:33

Bar of soap, Dr Organic rose soap smells wonderful not at all drying.

CheshireChat · 06/01/2018 10:39

I think you'll get more people saying they use soap simply because they usually have a reason, don't just pick liquid up out of habit.

I haven't used soap in a while simply because my skin doesn't seem to agree with it, but should probably try a few more types if just for the variety if nothing else.

insideoutsider · 06/01/2018 10:43

Following the soap and showering threads a few months ago, I've switched to soap. It leaves me very clean. I now no longer have to shower twice daily as I have always done with shower gel. I still feel fresh at the end of the day.

I use the body shop soaps, cut it in 2 so that I can use a different one if i get bored of a present one. I use the vented soap dishes so they are always dry.

Now I have the problem of how to use up the 12 bottles of body shop shower gels I have!

poisonedbypen · 06/01/2018 10:46

Dove isn't soap, it's more like shower gel. That's why it's called something like "beauty bar". I use soap in the shower these days & it's finally got rid of my stinky armpits. It wasn't anything anyone else could smell but if I wiped my fingers in my armpits they smelt sweaty. The rest of the family use shower gel which I understand (2 are students in shared houses) but I have plans to convert them. Liquid soap in kitchen & downstairs loo because it looks nicer!

WellTidy · 06/01/2018 10:52

Bars of soap for me. I have always used bar soap in the shower and bath, and next to the upstairs sink, and found it fine. So much cheaper than shower gel and more environmentally friendly not to buy plastic in the first place rather than just recycle (if indeed every element can be recycled). When the downstairs liquid soaps run out, I will be replacing those with bar soaps too. My favourite bar soaps at the moment are the glycerine based ones Waitrose own brand. I am using the pink lotus flower one at the moment, but they do lots of lovely scents including amber and bergamot. Occitane does a lovely almond exfoliating soap which I use in the shower too. I must make sure there are no microbeads in it, bug I'm pretty sure there aren't.
