Bar or Liquid soap?

noenergy · 06/01/2018 01:50

Which do most people use?

I assumed that liquid soap to wash hands and shower gel to wash was more hygienic as I heard that used bar soap contained bacteria. And also thought bar soap caused dry skin.

But seen in another thread a lot of people are reverting to bar soap.

So what do most people use and what is best for dry skin?

Have any of you tried African black soap? Reviews online are a bit mixed with some saying it's too harsh and others saying it's fantastic for eczema etc.

Snowdrop18 · 06/01/2018 15:25

this is why we started on bar stuff - they say they recycle it but they don't

anyway shipping it to China to recycle it was mad anyway.

Lush shampoo is great.

Over the years I always thought DH was being a bit quirky using bar soap for the shower ,whilst I have always use gels.Soap all the way in this house now, initially to cut down on plastics but I've decided to join him.Actually feel cleaner. As for drying out your skin, reading this it's just occurred to me every winter for years my hands crack with tiny little painful fissures, and I've tries every hand cream to remedy.I've just realised they are greatly improved this year so the coal tar soap isn't making things worse,it would seem better.Plus I love the smell. Will treat js to some olive oil or pure ingredient soaps for luxury. Before all the vast choice of plastic dispensers soap and water did a perfectly good job of cleaning. It's as much about how long, and how you wash your hands. You only have to use public loos to see how many people don't wash -gross - or give a cursory rinse.

About two thirds of the plastics we send to be recycled are landfilled or burned. And anyway - recycle comes after reduce and reuse.

father my DP uses it, as does his DM. they both swear by it form reducing spots and mattifying skin

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 06/01/2018 15:35

Which olive oil ones do people recommend?
Any of these:
allnaturalsoap.co.uk/product-category/bars/

Also-are any of the solid shampoo bars any good?
The bars on here:

Don’t you all find bars of soap go really soggy?

PurplePillowCase · 06/01/2018 15:39

Don’t you all find bars of soap go really soggy?

not with a 2 part (grille&bowl) soap dish

Davros · 06/01/2018 15:43

I've always used bar soap as I feel cleaner, I never feel clean with gel. I'm glad to see I'm back in fashion! I'm going to look for bar shampoo now but I only wash my hair once a week at most.

Natsku · 06/01/2018 15:47

Liquid, bar ones either dry out my skin or if they are the olive oil kind give me a reaction instead (same for DD). Will rarely use a tar bar one as that doesn't dry out my skin but they are a pain in the arse, slipping and sliding everywhere.

DoubleAces · 06/01/2018 15:47

I used both. I use Dettol bar soap for my bits and under arms and then go all over with liquid soap after.

Haffiana · 06/01/2018 15:48

Dove is not soap. It is a detergent bar.

ChelleDawg2020 · 06/01/2018 15:58

Liquid soap and shower gel. A bar is dirty, especially when shared between people.

LazyDailyMailJournos · 06/01/2018 16:01

Love bar soap. I find it keeps me cleaner and smelling fresher for longer than shower gel does.

Appuskidu · 06/01/2018 17:00

A bar is dirty,

Is that true?

There was a post on here very recently explaining (from a chemical point of view) why bars of soap were clean and were actually one of the few products that due to the alkaline properties, didn’t need to have preservatives added to them and once the outer layer was rinsed clean, were germ-free, unlike liquid soap which is packed full of detergent, preservatives etc

I can’t find that post though!

Reallytired17 · 06/01/2018 17:09

What type of hair do you have davros?

SimonBridges · 06/01/2018 17:27

My friend works in the waste and recycling department of the council. He was saying that plastic bottle pumps can’t be recycled at all. They end up in landfill or the incinerator.

Katyb1310 · 06/01/2018 18:30

We have bar soap for the bath, liquid soap on the sinks and liquid shower gel in the shower.

BadlyParkedRangeRover · 06/01/2018 18:36

Soap in shower and at washbasins, bar shampoo and bar conditioner (lush or funky soap).
My skin is less dry and i feel much cleaner!

Cantspell2 · 06/01/2018 19:02

Bar of coal tar upstairs bathroom plus shower gels as I have a relative who is always buying me fancy shower gels. Downstairs bathroom fancy soap, kitchen liquid soap and utility room has a soap on a rope as it is mainly used when coming in after working in the garden.

Enigma78 · 06/01/2018 19:26

Nesti Dante bars of soap here. Feel far cleaner & fresher for longer, skin isn't as dry, and the rough, red, scaly bumps on the backs of my upper arms have vanished!

64BooLane · 06/01/2018 19:31

Bars of soap aren’t dirty, truly. I’m fairly preoccupied with hygiene and I fully trust bar soap.

Testarossa1 · 06/01/2018 19:49

I've been using bar soap since that thread too, I've been soo much fresher, was a total revelation for me. I got some nice body shop soaps for Christmas and currently using a lovely orange one, it smells lovely. I keep it on a soap dish with holes in the top and a bowl underneath so completely dries out between uses.

Davros · 06/01/2018 20:49

reallytired17 obviously I've got dirty hair Grin
No, I've got shortish fine hair which looks better (a bit more volume) when it's a bit dirty
