Bar or Liquid soap?

noenergy · 06/01/2018 01:50

Which do most people use?

I assumed that liquid soap to wash hands and shower gel to wash was more hygienic as I heard that used bar soap contained bacteria. And also thought bar soap caused dry skin.

But seen in another thread a lot of people are reverting to bar soap.

So what do most people use and what is best for dry skin?

mirime "Not really, given that you touch the bottle before washing your hands."

but you don't touch a Dettol no-touch one?

I wish they would put no-touch dispensers in all workplaces.

Notso · 06/01/2018 11:13

We have the Dettol no touch ones so more hygienic too.

Not really, given that you touch the bottle before washing your hands

Yes! I've never understood the point of that no-touch thing, it just seems like a watt to get you to stick to that brand.

Notso · 06/01/2018 11:16

but you don't touch a Dettol no-touch one?
It doesn't matter if you touch it or not because you wash your hands immediately afterwards.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 06/01/2018 11:18

Are there any brands of soap that don't use palm like? Even finding a homemade recipe without palm oil is difficult
I know what you mean. I was disappointed to see that Faith in Nature soaps that are sold in places like H&B contain palm oil. I've found the ones without palm oil tend to be found more in eco websites or specialist soap companies than on the high street.
This place has a nice selection of palm oil free bars.

Snowdrop18 · 06/01/2018 11:27

re the no-touch bottles

I was thinking of high traffic areas, so yes, whoever buys and places the bottle is handling it but after that, you don't have several people who just got off the Tube or whatever touching the bottle.

TheHolidayArmadillo · 06/01/2018 12:08

Exactly. Dettol makes money by feeding/feeding off people's neuroses around germs.

I used imperial leather soap in the bath/shower. I don’t feel as though I’m properly clean with liquid soap/gels etc although do have liquid soap for hand washing in the bathrooms

MustBeThin · 06/01/2018 12:50

I switched to Neste Dante soap bars for the bath/shower just before Christmas. I bought a metal wire soap dish thing that sticks to tiles. It hasn't fallen off once and only cost about £8.

I had been suffering with dry hands for ages an no antibacterial liquid hand wash or hand cream helped. Then when I switched to soap for the body I also bought a bottle of Dr Bronner liquid soap for handwashing, my hands haven't been dry since. Obviously antibacterial soap, even the "moisturising" ones were obviously drying them out.

purpleanorak · 06/01/2018 12:51

I have liquid soap and bar soap. My reasoning is that bar soap (which I use) is better for the environment and looks nicer. However, I like to give guests the option of liquid soap in case they feel it is more hygienic.

BoucleJacket · 06/01/2018 12:52

I must admit I had a bar of soap sitting (received as a gift) that I hadn't opened and after reading that other thread I gave it a try in the shower.

I did feel "cleaner" after using it and it smelled lovely on my skin for much longer than the gels I was using!

So I've been converted back to bars of soap.

I do use a liquid hand soap for just hand washing though.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 06/01/2018 12:54

We use bar soap by the sinks because one child seems to have an allergy to liquid soap. We also use shower gel by t if I’m honest I prefer a bar. I still lather up on one of those puff things. Shower gel is more convenient though.

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 13:01

I use the naked soaps from lush, Rose Jam and one of their Xmas ones. They aren't drying like normal soaps and last forever.

They work the same as a shower gel (I have the shower gel version also) but have no packaging.

I have such dry skin but those really don't dry me out but I do also use their moisturiser which I'm pretty sure has actually changed my very dry skin to almost normal.

PurplePillowCase · 06/01/2018 13:05

bar soap.
liquid soaps contain preservatives (or it would go mouldy) and my eczema prone skin reacts to it.

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 13:08

Purplepillowcase Lush sell Self Preserving liquid shower gels if that helps?

Appuskidu · 06/01/2018 13:24

Bar soap since ‘that’ thread.

DH was keen and said that he never used to use shower gel till he met me. I did point out that really, no one used to use shower gel and it was probably just a coincidence that’s when we met!

I’ve tried a few bars. Now. A simple one that smelt funny. Pears lasted but DH said it dried his skin out and made him spotty and DD said it was too squeaky Grin -I didn’t really like the smell either. A glycerine one from Waitrose that was ok but didn’t smell nice any more after the first wash. Dove is nice (though not really a soap) though messy. We are currently using the Lush Snow Fairy solid soap which I love and have a Body Shop coconut one is next in line!

Which olive oil ones do people recommend?

Also-are any of the solid shampoo bars any good?

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 13:28

Also-are any of the solid shampoo bars any good?

I, again, use lush solid shampoos and find they last forever and make my hair feel much nicer and cleaner than liquid shampoos. I do use a normal conditioner though because I have very damaged hair.

Basically, Lush... for everything.

mumeeee · 06/01/2018 13:31

Shower gel and Liquid hand soap. It's more hygienic than bar soap as bar soap get a full of bacteria very quickly.

Appuskidu · 06/01/2018 13:35

Which solid shampoos are good, Ark?

mumeeee · 06/01/2018 13:39

Choccco plastic gets recycled in our area. Which includes all shower gel or shampoo bottles

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 14:05

Ooh, now you're asking! I'd have to remember the names!
I think it depends on what smell you like. There's one that is very strongly scented with cinnamon that I hate, but my friend will be buried with it I swear!

I use the green one and sometimes the purple one. Both smell amazing and that's really why I choose them, they all feel the same on my hair.

Do you have a local shop?

Appuskidu · 06/01/2018 14:57

No-we don’t :(

I don’ike the smell of cinnamon so that rules that one out! What do the green and purple ones smell like? Do you need something to keep the bar in, in between washes?

k2p2k2tog · 06/01/2018 15:06

Exactly. Dettol makes money by feeding/feeding off people's neuroses around germs

Totally agree. They do the sme thing with their stuff you put in the washing machine to deal with bacteria on clothes. Pointless but feeding into people's germophobia.

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 15:06

Purple is argan oil and rose (I love rose, but proper rose, not synthetic) and green is avocado.

uk.lush.com/products/shampoo

Here's the product list, you can buy online. I would definitely recommend. They last forever and foam up nicely considering they aren't full of the stuff you get in usual shampoos.

k2p2k2tog · 06/01/2018 15:07

plastic gets recycled in our area. Which includes all shower gel or shampoo bottles

Wrong! Didn't you see the coverage about how the UK isn't recycling its own plastics and has been shipping them to China?

Arkangel · 06/01/2018 15:08

I don't think much of the conditioners they do but the treatments are incredible.
