Am I getting old and grumpy ?? 'Making memories'

Making memories seems to be clogging .y facebook newsfeed.

Today it was feeding the ducks, yes, that childhood staple of feeding bread.in the.direction of ducks and being chased by angry geese is now worthy of being stuck on social media along with a long post from the parent, duck visitor patting themselves on the back for taking the kid.

I once had to help tease out a stuck poo from my sons arse, now THAT was a memory.

I know, I know. Im a twat but siince when has everyday stuff needed a twee paragraph to go with it ?!

I wouldn't do it but did their posts have any effect on you?

If you're frequently annoyed by your Facebook newsfeed you need to rethink your friends.

I know what you mean. Social media is now a way for those with pretty mundane lives to liveblog the summer holidays or share all their memory making with just about everyone they've ever met. So glad I grew up pre-social media so my mother wasn't posing me in increasingly farcical situations to get Likes SIL I'm looking at you

It's very tiring all this making memories. But not sure it's worth it.

We went on a British seaside holiday every year as children and yet DB cannot recall a single one of them.

On the day DS2 was born DH had a puncture and when he was asked at Tumble Tots if anyone had any news DS1 only mentioned the puncture.

Both my DSs remember a holiday we had purely because we got stuck in a lift.

Fortunately none of this was captured on FB. Grin

I tend to think when people make a fuss about mundane stuff and call it "making memories", it's because they don't do these activities very often.....so for that person feeding the ducks, they've probably not done it that much. They are probably normally stuck in the house with their kids and not taking them anywhere. I can only feel sorry for them.

Early on this year we took our kids on the london eye. I felt very sorry for a couple of kids on there who were trying to look for the landmarks on the map instead they were being barked orders at to perform various poses so their mum could show what theyd done on holiday to everyone.

It's sad......whatever happened to just doing 'stuff' ??

YANBU, I see the London eye type stuff all the time, live your bloody life, we have eyes+brain for the capture and storage of visual images.

I don't know. I am quite glad social media wasn't a thing when my two were small.

They are on FB now (although as teens they claim that is old hat) and they take pics etc, so I guess they are making their own memories in that way because it's 2017. I am sure when they have DC they will carry on.

I remember going on a tour of Anfield and everyone was there filming it on their I pads instead of just having the experience, and listening to the guide. Sad

I neither like it nor dislike it tbh. I take photos of my dc when we're out and about; sometimes I post them on facebook and I always get at least one from each trip printed out for the album.

Don't get me wrong, I don't take millions, I don't force them to pose and I don't caption my fb posts with twee paragraphs with #makingmemories but I do like the idea of them being able to look back through the albums, both online and physical, and reflect on their childhoods. I love doing this as an adult when my mum drags her massive photo box out from the cupboard and we can lose whole evenings reminiscing and laughing.

I don't mind looking through my fb friends' photos when they post them and am happy to see that they seemed to have enjoyed doing whatever activities they were doing. Sometimes it gives me ideas and inspiration and sometimes it gives me a kick up the bum - we can sometimes go for weeks without really doing anything special and I feel guilty for that but then I see friends posting about mundane things and realise that it doesn't have to be a big outing to be special.

I’d have been more annoyed that they were feeding bread to ducks and risking making the poor things ill!

DC talk fondly about activities they "always" used to do with us. Often these were things we did ONCE. We could have saved money by one beach holiday in the whole of their childhood, and it appears they'd still have the same memories.

It beats tanned feet on beautiful beaches.

I kind of like the celebration of the mundane. It feels more joyful to find pleasure in the small moments.

I don't post of Facebook though, so I'm not your culprit. Grin

yes, don't feed bread to ducks anymore - you can buy duck food online, or chuck in oats, peas anything the RSPB approves of and watch the ducks spurn it and go nuts when someone turns up with bread...

i agree, i hate the making memories rubbish.

I don’t mind the feeding the ducks, holiday picture type stuff but the bloody elves are irritating.

I’m reasonably sure that the purpose of the creepy elves is far more to do with showing fb how whacky and creative Mum and Dad are than anything to do with the kids.

I think a lot of people without much money justify the spending of money on non-essentials like days out etc on the grounds of 'making memories'.

Also agree that it tends to be the people that perhaps WOH or for whatever other reason don't get to do much of the day to day parenting...

I'm a reformed grumpy bastard. My memory is getting awful so I'm a bit more tolerant of people using fb as a sort of diary etc. It's the braggers and twee creeps that irk me now. I'm not on twitter or Instagram, I've enough enemies Grin

I agree. Nothing is as irritating as the elves! 'Making memories' comes a close second, but doesn't affect me in any way. I just ignore it. I've had to tell my kids that I asked the elves not to come to our house this year, because all the buggers in their class have them and they wondered why they didn't!

I take pictures of DS when we go out, to the park or nearby country estate type places, or if we're doing something special. I don't make him pose or anything, or post twee hashtags, but I think it's a nice way for our various and widely-flung family members to keep in touch with his development and all that.

However, I agree that if someone's doing something just to be able to post the twee FB status, then that sucks balls.
