Am I getting old and grumpy ?? 'Making memories'

Making memories seems to be clogging .y facebook newsfeed.

Today it was feeding the ducks, yes, that childhood staple of feeding bread.in the.direction of ducks and being chased by angry geese is now worthy of being stuck on social media along with a long post from the parent, duck visitor patting themselves on the back for taking the kid.

I once had to help tease out a stuck poo from my sons arse, now THAT was a memory.

I know, I know. Im a twat but siince when has everyday stuff needed a twee paragraph to go with it ?!

Delete Facebook

I did 3 weeks ago and it's brilliant!

OrchidShmorchid · 05/12/2017 16:31

I'm with you OP, I find documenting lives on social media absolutely tedious but then I realised that by having a fb account I was feeding it all so I deleted my account and ta da! No more annoyance/grumpiness and getting wound up by other people's photos! I highly recommend it. For me, the world is a much nicer place when there is no fb/twitter/Instagram in it.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 05/12/2017 16:36

#MakingMemories is shite but is the default call of people who are desperate to show what an excellent parent they are. They have an elf on the shelf!! #MakingMemories. They went to the beach! #MakingMemories. They had an icecream! #MakingMemories

Memories are not something which is created artificially. They just happen. Kids remember the weirdest things and not always what you'd want them to be remembering either. We went on a lovely wintery walk in the woods last weekend and what my kids will remember is me slipping and falling on my arse in a muddy puddle.

But yeah, scroll past on social media and don't like or comment.

#makingmemories comes second only to #lovemylife.

Flamingoingmad · 05/12/2017 16:40

I am a miserable old grumpy bugger and a bit humbug at the moment so YANBU.

I did an eye roll at a daily Day 5 Elf on the shelf update captioned with #makingmemories this morning on FB, thinking there's another bloody 19 days of this. Baa Humbug

However, it doesn't directly effect me, it can be hidden, and if it makes the person happy who am I to judge.

bigbluebus · 05/12/2017 16:40

Just wait until they are sharing it with you all over again in 1 year/2 years time when it comes up on their Facebook page and they share it all over again! I like that FB shows memories but I don't share them and bore the pants off everyone all over again.

cjt110 · 05/12/2017 16:43

#makingmemories comes second only to #lovemylife.

No no no.... Its

  1. #blessed
  2. #makingmemories
  3. #love my life
Ellisandra · 05/12/2017 16:43

I'm fine with friends sharing what they've doing with their kids.
I like seeing the photos, and they're my friends - I know they're not bragging (they're just as likely to post parenting fails!)

But any one who uses that god awful term "making memories" can just fuck off.

Curlyshabtree · 05/12/2017 16:48

Old and grumpy and proud of it. Making memories indeed....Just do stuff and enjoy it! Perpetual documentation not required.

Don't forget 'only 3 years 17 weeks, 4 days and 12 seconds until I marry this one, I can't wait to be your wife #happiestgirlalive'

'Fabulous day with this one, your girls all love you very much #bestdaddyever'

'A year ago today I married the love of my life #happilyeverafter #itsalljustbollocksandyouallknowhesshaggingaroundbutletsjustpretend

Wilburissomepig · 05/12/2017 16:56

Fuck no you're no BU at all. I hate all that shite.

I have a friend who's always 'making memories' or 'feeling blessed', when in reality all she seems to do is moan about her kids.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 05/12/2017 16:58

When DS was 6 we went on a lovely holiday to Centre Parc, including a trip to Longleat as his favourite programme back then was Animal Park. We'd also gone to chessington as well for a day trip.

At school he wrote about his favourite day. It was seeing a dead pigeon at my mums house! Complete with picture of pigeon with blood coming out. ConfusedGrin Strangely that wouldn't have been first in my list of making memories. (And we totally don't take the piss everytime we see a dead pigeon, oh no.Wink)

I do put photos on Facebook, but I don't do hashtags. We do look through them like you would a photo album sometimes.

paxillin · 05/12/2017 17:00

I sat with a friend over a coffee and she talked about "making memories". I forgot everything she said that day except this stupid phrase. I suppose we made a memory.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/12/2017 17:02

He he Mard Grin

Years ago I worked as a nanny. The mum made some lovely mince pies then called the children into the kitchen, put aprons on them, dabbed their faces with flour and barked "Smile!" at them, before putting the pic on FB #making memories- baking mince pies!!!

It dawned on me then what a load of bollocks it was.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/12/2017 17:05

The Dead Pigeon, that's a great memory. It's actually something like that children remember. Grin

Eolian · 05/12/2017 17:05

You're not old and grumpy, you're just not an attention-seeking twat. Nice pics of fun stuff are fine, but if anyone on my FB feed started with the #making memories (ugh) bollocks I'd unfollow their posts. Ok maybe I am a bit old and grumpy. #old, grumpy and proud.

OhForFrigSake · 05/12/2017 17:06

Namechange I just laughed so hard at your pigeon story my cat bolted out of the room Grin

HRTpatch · 05/12/2017 17:06

#blessed is fucking awful.

overnightangel · 05/12/2017 17:07

I was looking after my 3 year old niece this morning.
We walked to the post office to pay my tv licence and I stood in dog shit on the way home
#makingmemories

Thurlow · 05/12/2017 17:08

I took the baby, at about 6 months old, to see the ducks. We just sort of stood there looking at them for all of ten seconds and then I thought... Err, now what?

True, it's memorable. But only for the sheer ludicrousness of the moment.

Trying to stop the baby crawling through his older sister's poo-streaked legs the other day was far more memorable.
