Am I getting old and grumpy ?? 'Making memories'

Making memories seems to be clogging .y facebook newsfeed.

Today it was feeding the ducks, yes, that childhood staple of feeding bread.in the.direction of ducks and being chased by angry geese is now worthy of being stuck on social media along with a long post from the parent, duck visitor patting themselves on the back for taking the kid.

I once had to help tease out a stuck poo from my sons arse, now THAT was a memory.

I know, I know. Im a twat but siince when has everyday stuff needed a twee paragraph to go with it ?!

Yes. "Making memories" that grinds my gears. Thats a natural human brain function. Children also will remember the odd things you might not remember.
Anyone using that phrase is 100% insufferable parenting arse. Posting for entirely self serving reasons. I am looking at you cousin.

ForgivenessIsDivine · 05/12/2017 17:47

I am old and grumpy too!! Stop telling everyone else how bloody wonderful your life is...

For what it's worth, I was making memories yesterday, attempting to embrace the reduced waste bandwagon everyone is jumping on, I bought a 5kg bag of oatmeal yesterday, which fell against the wooden box I use to bring my recycling to the recycling centre in and the bag of oats spilled all over the boot of my car. I posted that on facebook!!

missyB1 · 05/12/2017 17:51

I have the joy of a mum on FB who is doing a Christmas jigsaw(supposedly with the kids), and posts every day showing the next few pieces that have been put in. I’m hoping they finish the bloody thing before we all die of boredom.

Oh yeah. That's exactly what I said (why is there no eye roll emoji?). I've seen a lot of kids whose parents frankly couldn't give a shit about making memories let alone anything else, so perhaps I have a different perspective. I also had a pretty shite time of it when I was a kid with one parent in particular, so yes I do think these kids are lucky. That doesn't mean that people who don't post don't love their kids.

I share a fair amount on fb given that none of our family or close friends are nearby (minus the irritating hashtags obviously). Can I just save photos somewhere? Sure, but we all know what happens with all those digital photos you take and stick on a computer.

I'm not saying there aren't some infuriating idiots out there painting their lives as perfect and being massively annoying, but the act of taking photos and sharing them on SM is hardly the crime of the bloody century.

Mrsdraper1 · 05/12/2017 17:57

YADNBU I hate "making memories" almost as much as I hate that fucking Elf on the bastard shelf bollocks.
If my mother had done that when I was a kid I would have freaked out and been completely terrified. They look creepy and who the fuck has time to do all that? Not me.

Itsallfuckery · 05/12/2017 18:06

Making memories 🤢🤢🤢 what complete shit! Always the same smug mugs making their life out to be something it’s not. Hate it with a passion.

Yep, I’m grumpy and proud too!

marmiteloversunite · 05/12/2017 18:07

YANBU

I'm grumpy and old too! I hate #foreverhome

That is not your forever home. You will not be able to maintain that house when you are retired. Your nursing home will be your forever home. So there! Angry

Itsallfuckery · 05/12/2017 18:09

Often accompanied by the equally vomit inducing #love my babies 🙄 yeah, cos the rest of us don’t of course...

paxillin · 05/12/2017 18:12

The twatter hashtags to label stuff are irritating. As if a random from the internet wants to read about your theme park day because you are #soblessed. Got to go now.

#fuckingcoldhere #coffeeisfinished #wheresmycardigan

Peanutbuttercheese · 05/12/2017 18:15

I think it shows a bit of insecurity and boredom. I rarely post on FB, maybe once a month. I did post a pic of a note DS left in a cake box . He wrote I ate the last one lmfao!

Welshmaenad · 05/12/2017 18:21

Does anyone ever search the hashtag #soblessed on fb/twitter just find people who are blessed?

paxillin · 05/12/2017 18:24

Nope. I might search #wheresmycardigan for ideas though. Damn thing is hiding.

paxillin · 05/12/2017 18:26

Just searched #soblessed. Don't; it is worse than anything you read on MN and googled.

LunasSpectreSpecs · 05/12/2017 18:27

very first pic which comes up on my FB with the #soblessed tag is a baby wearing a denim jacket and a headband with a pink bow.

Says it ALL.

IsItThursdayYet · 05/12/2017 18:42

I live away from my friends and family. So yeah, I post pictures of my kids feeding the ducks, or going to the park, because then my friends and family get to see it. If they don't like it or think it's attention seeking they can fuck off with their opinion, because it's my account, not theirs. Isn't that the point of Facebook?

ByThePowerOfRa · 05/12/2017 18:45

Yanbu. I hate social media, other than mumsnet (which doesn’t count). #34 and grumpy.

PS: that was an ironic hashtag

I do like to ‘make memories’ though, I just don’t make them to show to all my friends. I’m not on Facebook, but how weird if I texted memory making photos to EVERYONE I knew.

ByThePowerOfRa · 05/12/2017 18:51

My family live a plane ride away. I just send them photos. Each to their own though. I hate the medium, not the posters!

PastLegoNow · 05/12/2017 18:52

"For what it's worth, I was making memories yesterday, attempting to embrace the reduced waste bandwagon everyone is jumping on, I bought a 5kg bag of oatmeal yesterday, which fell against the wooden box I use to bring my recycling to the recycling centre in and the bag of oats spilled all over the boot of my car. haha I like your sense of humour Smile

BattleaxeGalactica · 05/12/2017 18:55

Can I add any reference to family or home as 'your world' particularly when made with a warm, gravelly faux cockney voiceover?

Yes, British Gas I'm giving you a very hard stare Angry

Wilburissomepig · 05/12/2017 19:08

I also take photos and send them to my relatives who live far away Thursday. Normally via messenger.

I have no desire to plaster them all over Facebook adorned with hashtags, begging for 'likes'. It means fuck all.

Some people really don't seem to understand that it's perfectly possible to take photos, thousands of them if you like, and not post them publicly.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 05/12/2017 19:10

Your nursing home will be your forever home

That made me laugh. I really have turned old bitter and grumpy, oh dear Grin

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/12/2017 19:11

The Kardashian’s started this phrase and it’s snowballed

Eh voila

AstridWhite · 05/12/2017 19:19

Budge up, I'll sit with you on the old and grumpy bench. Hearing about people 'making memories' causes me to pull a face and roll my eyes , especially as most of these things, pleasant though they are, won't actually be remembered at all. Showing someone a photo of themselves doing something twenty years later is not the same as them actually remembering it.

NataliaOsipova · 05/12/2017 20:17

Always the same smug mugs making their life out to be something it’s not.

But - at the risk of sounding like a complete bitch - here's the thing. With people you know even vaguely well, you basically know how well off they are (in broad terms, anyway). You know where they live, you know what they do, what their DH does, if their kids are at private school etc etc. So what's the point of pretending that you're some sort of champagne socialite Pippa Middleton type if you actually have an average job/lifestyle? It's so obviously fake and surely can't impress anyone?

Lweji · 05/12/2017 20:42

For the most part it seems it's people making out their lives to seem more interesting than they are.
