Is 'chin up' insensitive, dismissive or just the right thing to say to someone (a friend)?

Suppose you had a friend who you knew was/had told you they you they were going through a bit of a hard time. You want to help them, so you give them advice etc., but you might not be physically able to meet up with them due to distance/commitments etc.

Is saying 'chin up' appropriate? Is it the kind of phrase that a friend would say/ write to you?

What? You mean lile you ? If the cap fits, wear it!! Slacko

Does it matter if a new post is submitted on an older topic?

PonyPatter44 · 14/01/2024 19:35

It absolutely depends on the character of the individuals involved in the conversation. Some people, as you can see here, would regard it as a total brush off, akin to saying, go feck yourself you melt. Some people would see it more as a stay strong sort of thing.

If I'd been at a friend's house for tea and sympathy, and she'd listened to me rant and moan, and then said, chin up, as I was leaving, it would seem quite nice and understanding to me.

Fair enough PonyPatter but really, it is a condescending comment.

WakyWally · 21/01/2024 16:27

3 people lately have said it to me lately and really all i wanna do is chin em!!

Birch101 · 21/01/2024 16:30

No, bloody annoying I take it to mean plaster a fake smile on and keep going, you don't have time for anything else

Stay strong, do what you need to get through and I'm here whenever you need would go down better for me

ThinWomansBrain · 21/01/2024 16:38

It's not a phrase I'd use - sounds old fashioned.
That you've asked on here suggests you don't feel entirely comfortable with it either - say what you feel.

Ad if you don't quite know what to say- someone asked my advice on what to write for something recently - we shoved it thru chat gpt - certainly didn't use the output verbatim, but it came up with some eloquent reusable phrases

WakyWally · 27/01/2024 17:45

Agree with you there. Mostly, but dont you think Stay Strong is a very similarly annoying comment ??

WakyWally · 27/01/2024 17:46

Its all similar to Man Up really. Thats a dreadful comment
