To find Ed Sheeran's music really forced?

Before anyone else says it... #firstworldproblems

But his songs just seem to be tactically written to have mass appeal. Galway Girl rammed full of tired stereotypes... Castle on the Hill which he presents as some kind of 'salt of the earth' autobiographical kind of thing but then admits he's never actually broken his leg (so why say it?)

And the new one, Perfect, seems to have been written as part of a 'wedding song by numbers' kit - falling in love young, prevailing "against the odds", hoping to have children, etc etc.

Yes, obviously music has to be commercial, but people like Adele and Sam Smith (heck even Taylor Swift!) manage to be commercial yet authentically reflect their own experiences.

AIBU? (probably)

I agree with you. Listen to something better.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 23/11/2017 18:40

Everyones music you have just mentioned makes me want to puke. Apart from Taylor Grin

Ed sheerans 'salt of the earth' song, is just him passing judgement on everyone he knows from his past.

He's an arse

BeanoNoir · 23/11/2017 18:40

Though I did think Prince was genius for coming up with party like its 1999 way before the millennium.

Missonihoni · 23/11/2017 18:42

Why do you know so many song titles if you hate him so much 😂 Just change the station.

Jenala · 23/11/2017 18:42

They are very calculated songs. That's why he's rich Grin

He's very clever and writes for a lot of other artists though so I can't think too badly of him. However yanbu.

WildBluebelles · 23/11/2017 18:42

Apparently his record company begged him not to release Galway Girl...

VladmirsPoutine · 23/11/2017 18:43

I don't think YABU. But Taylor Swift is a snake and quite possibly one of the worst artists out there pretending to be 'normal'. She's horrific. A charlatan.

moutonfou · 23/11/2017 18:43

Missonihoni radio constantly on at work... no choice Sad

8 yr old dd loves his songs.

I worry. Grin

SausagePerfume · 23/11/2017 18:43

I agree. Feels like he's cheating, although I don't blame him.

LoniceraJaponica · 23/11/2017 18:44

I like his music.
What does that say about me Blush
At least he writes his own songs and actually has talent, unlike so many manufactured bands these days.

moutonfou · 23/11/2017 18:44

P.S. this thread was largely the result of hearing "Perfect" four times today alone.

OwdBets · 23/11/2017 18:45

I like him.

Uokbing · 23/11/2017 18:45

It's almost becoming like parody.

Tbf, despite the ridiculous stereotypes and blatant trying to appeal to his huge Irish fan Base, Galway Girl has rather grown on me. And I do like Castle on the Hill, and a couple of others from the album. But Perfect must win the prize for most contrived song ever, and Supermarket Flowers was obviously written with the funeral market in mind.

The fact that at one point, almost every song in the Top 10 was from his album and on YouTube comments you see people going on about how Perfect really speaks to them, is rather depressing.

Although Nick Grimshaw and Chris Stark were on Radio 1 the other day talking about the worst song on the R1 playlist right now, and Chris said it was 'Perfect', so maybe Ed can't keep churning out this crap forever.

Nomoretears56 · 23/11/2017 18:45

Can't stand him, he's ruined music, releases one crap single after another and dominates the UK music scene, someone done this world a huge dis-service when whoever told him he was good!!!

PinkHeart5914 · 23/11/2017 18:45

I like him, I’ve seen him live and everything! However I’d rather poke my own eyes out than listen to Taylor swift or Adele

WildBluebelles · 23/11/2017 18:45

Plus when he sings about driving at 90 down the country lanes, I just keep thinking that only a knob would drive that fast.

Oh and when I hear the song Don't which is about Ellie Goulding, it sounds like from the outset he wanted no strings and put everything 'on hold' and then got all pissy because she also thought it was a casual thing.

I need to get a life.

Ha, I always wonder if those blokes are OK with being branded as absolute losers so publically by their highly successful old school mate. Except they probably don't exist in the first place, it all just rhymes quite nicely.

MagicMojito · 23/11/2017 18:48

Love him and his music. Bollocks to you all Grin Grin

PavlovianLunge · 23/11/2017 18:52

If he and the Shape of You girl are all thrifty, filling a plate and a bag at the all-you-can-eat, why do they get a taxi later? Hmm

And his bedsheets smell of her? Envy < not envy

WildBluebelles · 23/11/2017 18:55

Because they're exhibitionists who get off on the taxi driver watching them in the back seat.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 23/11/2017 19:02

I can't stand any of them. Ed Sheeran's lyrics are creepy and my Irish blood despises Galway Girl. The charts were ruined the minute autotuned music became a thing. My brain knows it's wrong.

I live in Eds town, SO I feel like I have to like him Blush

Commuterface · 23/11/2017 20:30

I don’t mind Ed but I wonder if he would have been anywhere near as successful if he wasn’t friendly with Harry Styles, who made that cameo in his video for ‘Drunk’. Then of course he went on to write a couple of songs for One Direction, which sold him to the American teen market. I don’t know - I just feel like he has been very lucky with his timing and hanging off the back of One Direction and, to some extent, Taylor Swift.
