To find Ed Sheeran's music really forced?

Before anyone else says it... #firstworldproblems

But his songs just seem to be tactically written to have mass appeal. Galway Girl rammed full of tired stereotypes... Castle on the Hill which he presents as some kind of 'salt of the earth' autobiographical kind of thing but then admits he's never actually broken his leg (so why say it?)

And the new one, Perfect, seems to have been written as part of a 'wedding song by numbers' kit - falling in love young, prevailing "against the odds", hoping to have children, etc etc.

Yes, obviously music has to be commercial, but people like Adele and Sam Smith (heck even Taylor Swift!) manage to be commercial yet authentically reflect their own experiences.

AIBU? (probably)

Tattius I always assumed he meant the rap cross Tiny Dancer that was out a few years back, N-Dubz maybe?! I can't remember but there was a version I'm sure

and Elton allowed this? I daren’t Youtube it.

I agree PeiPei about his cringey Oscar speech, more so because he was actually wrong, he wasn’t the first gay person to receive that Oscar. Wanker

boredofmyoldname · 24/11/2017 00:25

I stand corrected, it wasn't N-Dubz.

Ironik & Chipmunk feat. Elton John - Tony Dancer (2009), I guess that would've been late teen, driving age for Ed and Co.

No idea why that caught my attention Hmm:o

KickingCuh · 24/11/2017 00:26

Tony dancer. Is this some sort of dad dancing hybrid?

TattiusTeddius · 24/11/2017 00:26

I’m howling at “Tony Dancer” Grin sounds like a shit Ed Sheeran song

boredofmyoldname · 24/11/2017 00:26

*Tiny. I'm sure Tony would've held Elton close too, had he asked.

TattiusTeddius · 24/11/2017 00:28

Which Tony though?

My money is on that Hadley fella

boredofmyoldname · 24/11/2017 00:30

I reckon it was Tony Hart...

Although somehow I've always envisioned EJ singing it to Wayne Sleep!

ginplease8383 · 24/11/2017 00:33

YABU Galway Girl is the only song guaranteed to stop my toddlers melting down in the car!

PeiPeiPing · 24/11/2017 00:34

It was definitely TONY the PONY. Smile

It's like Cluedo :o

SuperBeagle · 24/11/2017 00:48

He irritates me for no discernible reason.

Don't like his music, doesn't have any physical appeal, find him a bit whiny, and the fact that his fans lecture others on how talented he is. My favourite band is Led Zeppelin, so forgive me for not thinking your mate Ed is particularly "talented".

blackteasplease · 24/11/2017 01:05

I do agree with the driving at 90 bit. Think that every time I hear it - driving thst fast on country lanes is dangerous!

GreyOwls · 24/11/2017 02:09

Ed Sheeran is this decade’s Robbie Williams.

Just awful, lazy, cliche-ridden lyrics and repetitive, badly composed music sung by a mediocre gurning idiot.

There, Ive said it.

TheStoic · 24/11/2017 03:20

I think he just punches some things into a computer, and it spits out the most nostalgic and sentimental combination of words and music possible.

wasMissD · 24/11/2017 03:21

Ed Sheeran is the WORST!! His vocals (and songs) are so bland. Makes me so angry when there are really talented singers and musicians out there who are nowhere near as successful as his tripe. Same with a lot of them. Cheryl Cole, Katy Perry etc- Their live vocals are awful.

Ps. I can't sing. But in the car, I'm Beyoncé Smile

ethelfleda · 24/11/2017 03:38

I used to like him until he released Galway girl. What a shit shit song.

MaximaDeWit · 24/11/2017 03:42

He is utter shit! I’ve never really heard his stuff before but the last couple of songs I’ve heard on the radio have made me cringe!

Sparklingbrook · 24/11/2017 06:04

He's not my cup of tea, but he does seem to be very well liked.
But then I love Ellie Goulding so what do I know? Grin

lilly0 · 24/11/2017 06:58

Im not that keen on Eds new music compared to his old stuff that being said I like his music it isn't put over some shitty house beat like all other new music seems to be It's touching maybe I'm cheesy I love photograph , kiss me, little bird, Tenerife sea. He's suitable to listen to with DD most of the time , which is a rarity with songs like Swalla and anaconda . I don't feel like there's many genres with popular music anymore everything has a dance beat thrown over the top so Ed makes a nice change to that.

Digestive28 · 24/11/2017 07:06

Record company told him galaway girl was too silly and full of stupid stereotypes and so wouldn't sell. He pointed out every other person in America think so they are Irish and would buy it as a result. Turns out he was right. Don't like it but he knows how to make stuff that sells

LEMtheoriginal · 24/11/2017 07:07

Gotta love a bit of music snobbery!

I love Ed. My dd (12) loves Ed.

I also love Kenny Rogers

surferjet · 24/11/2017 07:14

Galway girl was brilliant!
Such a nice happy song, which is what most people want really.
He’s not trying to be Morrissey ( who a lot of people also can’t stand) he’s just writing songs that appeal to the. masses.
I love him.
