To find Ed Sheeran's music really forced?

Before anyone else says it... #firstworldproblems

But his songs just seem to be tactically written to have mass appeal. Galway Girl rammed full of tired stereotypes... Castle on the Hill which he presents as some kind of 'salt of the earth' autobiographical kind of thing but then admits he's never actually broken his leg (so why say it?)

And the new one, Perfect, seems to have been written as part of a 'wedding song by numbers' kit - falling in love young, prevailing "against the odds", hoping to have children, etc etc.

Yes, obviously music has to be commercial, but people like Adele and Sam Smith (heck even Taylor Swift!) manage to be commercial yet authentically reflect their own experiences.

AIBU? (probably)

VileyRose Sam Smith is from my town and my daughter goes to his old school but I just can’t bring myself to like him.

Cannot listen to any of his music.. or Sam Smith ... booooooring

Tinycitrus · 23/11/2017 20:36

I think it is very calculated music. I hate it all.

That Galway Girl song is an abomination.

I was just upset he didn’t get a doing in GoT.

Tinycitrus · 23/11/2017 20:37

Sam Smith sounds like such a bloody bed wetter.

BigFatFryUp · 23/11/2017 20:38

I can't bear his music. Dross.

Don't get me started on Sam Smith...

Tinycitrus · 23/11/2017 20:40

I was listening to the Manics ‘if you tolerate this..’ the other day. That single went to number 1.
It’s all such shite these days. I do wonder if pop is finally dead Sad

GruffaloPants · 23/11/2017 22:05

He seems like a nice enough person, but...

Galway Girl is a cliched cringe fest.
The line "you between my arms" in Perfect conjours up a bizarre image of someone with arms rigidly outstretched, clamping onto their beloved as they manoeuvre awkwardly.

GoingRogue · 23/11/2017 22:11

This latest offering, Perfect, sounds to me like something Boyzone would have churned out in the 90's.

Also, Rita Ora's latest song sounds like Steps.

Tinycitrus · 23/11/2017 22:12

Love that Havana song though

QueenNovo · 23/11/2017 22:12

YANBU. He seems like a nice enough bloke but his music is pretty meh, I have no idea why it's so popular.

PolaDeVeboise · 23/11/2017 22:13

I have always found him dull beyond belief, his music doesn't move me AT ALL.

MinorRSole · 23/11/2017 22:23

I quite like him. I wouldn't buy an album but wouldn't switch over if he was on the radio. Same with Taylor swift. Adele I cannot listen to at all. Today I had dolly & Kenny islands in the stream on repeat with a bit of Tracy chapman too so my music tastes aren't really in the same area

stormnigel · 23/11/2017 22:30

He’s not good. I’ve always thought so. I hated class a team. Such a clever play on words... not particularly.

howdoyoudecide · 23/11/2017 22:30

He came out to Afghanistan when I was there and he played two nights - stayed afterwards until he had taken a photo with everyone. Nice guy.

badg3r · 23/11/2017 22:32

I have seen him live and he is a really incredible performer. Did the whole set just him and his loop pedal and the sound was amazing. My favourite live performance from a current artist. But this was just when he was getting famous, and a lot of his new stuff just makes me sad because it is obviously geared towards taking in the cash! U.N.I. and small bump are cracking songs but I'm In Love With Your Body just makes me cringe!!

midnightmisssuki · 23/11/2017 22:33

i like some of his songs, and he's a very talented song-writer. Can you write songs like him OP Grin?

LoniceraJaponica · 23/11/2017 22:34

" I have no idea why it's so popular."

I have no idea why he is so unpopular on mumsnet.

GreySloanMemorial · 23/11/2017 22:38

The lines “dancing in the dark with you between my arms” were supposed to be some weird reference to sex apparently. Still love him though Grin

This

Sam Smith... Every time I hear his whiney, snivelling voice I want to to reachl for a razor blade and cut his fucking throat or my fucking wrists!!!

MsJudgemental · 23/11/2017 23:17

Can’t stand him- when we’re out in the car, we play ‘how long before Ed Sheeran’s On’. Heart Bristol seem to play at least 3 an hour. Contrived, repetitive lyrics.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 23/11/2017 23:25

His music is shit. But I can just about tolerate it. I have to turn sam smith over in the wireless he makes me urge

LoniceraJaponica · 23/11/2017 23:31

Those of you who think his music is shut. What music do you like?

LoniceraJaponica · 23/11/2017 23:32

Not shut but shit

JaneJeffer · 23/11/2017 23:34

Here's some proper music . You're welcome.
