to expect my neighbours not to smoke on their patio on lovely sunny days because I can smell it and it's HORRIBLE

Of course, I am being unreasonable and I have absolutely no intention of suggesting they don't do it but it doesn't stop me grumbling to myself every time I get a whiff of cigarette smoke on my patio of in through the open kitchen door. It's so foul! I have no idea why people smoke at all, it's completely beyond me. It has to be one of the most antisocial habits in the world

Grumble all you like but agree with your own judgement that you are being unreasonable.

ScottishMummy · 15/04/2007 19:26

No offence taken , and it was an ambiguous comment of mine spray of stella haha eau de parfum or 330ml

pointydog · 15/04/2007 19:31

i like a wafty smell of tobacco outdoors

pointydog · 15/04/2007 19:32

if the faint smell of tobacco makes you feel queasy you could pretend it's the smell of crushed olives as your neighbours make tapenade

ScottishMummy · 15/04/2007 19:34

pointydog LOL fabby visual image

obimomkanobi · 15/04/2007 19:35

Horses for courses.

The OP doesn't like the smell of fags. I don't like the smell of cheap perfume.

One mans meat is another mans poison.

expatinscotland · 15/04/2007 20:13

I like perfume.

I don't really give a toss if people smoke in their own property, garden, patio, etc.

Honestly haven't really given either one a thought.

Pixel · 16/04/2007 00:55

There's a yappy ratty thing next door to us too. Mind you the whole family is incredibly noisy and selfish and are seriously getting on my nerves. Had sweet old lady there before .

Anyway, yes, cigarette smoke horrible but we've got a footpath at the back of our garden where people go to walk their dogs. I tried to sit outside today and it absolutely reeks of dog poo. It was so foul I had to come back indoors. There is a special bin but people are too bone idle to use it. Do you think if I contacted the council they would actually do anything about it?

nappyaddict · 16/04/2007 01:09

it's not the smell that would annoy me but the fact that you are still breathing their smoke. although i don't really know if you would be breathing their smoke as its next door - maybe its too far away? if you can smell it does that mean you are breathing it in?

custy · 16/04/2007 01:16

i like the smell.

but then i have recently given up smoking.

i think that there is a yukky smell of a smoker who has smoked a lot and not bathed for a time. old smokey smell is really pukey. i want to go all stalinesq on yer arses and say " as a reformed smoker i think its disgusting"
i really want to agree with MB becuase she is ultimatley sensible.

but its their house and on their patio - i think they should be able to have a fag tbh

twentypence · 16/04/2007 01:24

Our lawn is actually in the front of our house (but we are detached and it's fenced all the way around.) so we can sit out on a nice day without enjoying someone else's ciggie smoke. Unfortunately the washing is right in the firing line being in the back garden.

fortyplus · 17/04/2007 09:17

nappyaddict - probably only the same as 'breathing in' the smell of a poo!

Serious scientific note... to smell something you do have to inhale molecules of the substance. Bleeurgh!

MamaD · 17/04/2007 10:11

I'm a smoker and only smoke outside. In the past my neighbours have commented that they could smell the smoke if they were outside or had their kitchen door open.

They didn't ask me to stop mind, but I was embarrassed enough to start moving around the corner of the house for a ciggy.

Had they asked me to stop I may well have had to comment on the "Shut the F**k up" scream at midnight to their kids, the constant rowing at full volume when I'm trying to watch CSI (!) the calling the cats in at 2300, the slamming doors and teenage tantrums when I'm trying to get dd to sleep, the dogs barking, the smell of dog poo wafting thru my air vents, the teenagers climbing over the back fence, the rubbish outside the front door.......and on and on.......

(they've moved now and it's soooooo quiet)

kimi · 17/04/2007 19:07

God mamaD I know who would rather live next door to out of you and your neighbours!!!!

pointydog · 17/04/2007 19:13

and these neighbours of yours, mamad, didn't smoke?

I smoke outside in my 100ft garden. If my neighbour had a mind to complain about it, I would come right back with an objection to being woken every day by the noise from her children waking me at 6 ish most mornings, wailing and screaming. I would also want to know why she parks her car in the street, not on her osp drive and why she continually asks me for little favours along the babysitting and borrowing thing lines.

I would never smoke in a public place where there are children. I would never smoke inside my own home. I would never leave a fag but in the street or flick smoking detritus over my fence.

If you can't smoke in your own garden - then you'll have to make criminals of the 25% of us adults who still smoke, whether its 2 a day or 100 a day.

So, yes, unreasonable.

staceym11 · 17/04/2007 20:05

now i smoke the odd one, my neighbor smokes about 20 a day afaik, but even though she knows i smoke (outside the house might i add) and she doesnt have children, she has made a point of asking if we smell it etc and to tell her to p* off somewhere else. which is lovely of her, normally doesnt bother me, unless dd is standing by the window, but i just asked her to keep an eye out and if she wouldnt mind not if dd is there, shes been great about it.

i dont think you're unreasonable but maybe you could have a polite word with her and see if she even realises, some people wear blinkers im sure!!!

fortyplus · 18/04/2007 09:20

JustUsTwo - they've got a special Seafood evening tonight @ £20 a head - dh was gutted that we were coming home and we'd miss it!

fortyplus · 18/04/2007 09:22

JustUsTwo - thought I'd better say that they've just got some tables outside - not a proper beer garden. Lovely inside, but if you wanted to sit outside it would be fine if your children are older, but a nightmare if they're little as it's next to a road - though quiet.

blossomsmine · 30/06/2007 23:38

DaphneHarvey, i totally agree with what you said.
I smoke in my garden, not in my house, not around children and would never walk up to an area where other people are and start smoking. But i DO smoke. Do you all think it is easy to give up? I think alot of smokers would actually like to give up.

Desiderata · 30/06/2007 23:43

Ponces!

Sixer · 30/06/2007 23:54

blossomsmine,DH i agree with you totally. No way would i light up next to someone else. I smoke in the back garden under a brolly if needs be. I always stub 'em out pick 'um up and chuck in a bin. I will not Kiss DP on the mouth if i have had a smoke. Yes it has caused problems between us. (He's an X) I do always think of people around me and if it would be ok to light up. (Normally i take ten paces back, even if with friends in a beer garden that don't smoke). So NOW 23.49 I will go and roll up, I HOPE for the last time. to the OP yes you know you are being unreasonable. You were one of the lucky ones.
it's probably more like 23.53 by the time i finished this. Heres to hopefully the last. PUFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF
