to expect my neighbours not to smoke on their patio on lovely sunny days because I can smell it and it's HORRIBLE

Of course, I am being unreasonable and I have absolutely no intention of suggesting they don't do it but it doesn't stop me grumbling to myself every time I get a whiff of cigarette smoke on my patio of in through the open kitchen door. It's so foul! I have no idea why people smoke at all, it's completely beyond me. It has to be one of the most antisocial habits in the world

Hatrick, similar here. Weirdo Son of next door had been flicking his nasty substance fag butts on to our patio. I was furious cos ds was only 2yrs and I had visions of him picking them up and eating them.

Dh picked them all up and put them in a bag and posted it through next doors letterbox.

Never happened again!

amess · 15/04/2007 17:30

Agree people should only be allowed to smoke INSIDE their own homes. On the street it is really bad sometimes and have seen little ones far too close to someones hand with a cigarette in it. Can't go to a local beauty spot anymore with the children as the office lot have to smoke outside and so they have taken over the area the children loved to play on the bridge throwing sticks into the river.

TenaLady · 15/04/2007 17:30

Oh yes raaatheeer In my dreams!

amess · 15/04/2007 17:32

Sorry SoupDragon for your situation apart from bushy bush which would take time to grow wonder if the candle suggestion would help but then again why should you have to go to the expense and danger of unattended candle?

obimomkanobi · 15/04/2007 18:11

Yes it's a terrible thing an adult engaging in a perfectly legal activity on her own patio in her own garden.

I'm off out into my garden now to have a fag. I do hope that some sensitive wee mumsnetter with the nasal capabilities of a sniffer dog doesn't catch a whiff of it.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/04/2007 18:17

She maybe doesn't realise its upsetting you. I used to smoke and stand by my backdoor and smoke, which was 3ft away from my neighbour's backdoor. If they'd come out and asked me to move further away I'd have done so straight away. I'm so dim it never crossed my mind that they may smell it. But maybe people aren't all as reasonable as me and she may clout you one instead!

brimfull · 15/04/2007 18:20

Our neighbours behind us had a party the other night and the smoke smell was really strong ,could even smell it inside with the windows shut.
I am ex smoker so can smell it a mile off,dh has never smoked and he's useless, couldn't smell it if it as under his nose.

Kbear · 15/04/2007 18:23

Bob your head up over the wall, spray air freshener over (a nice forest pine one) and slam your back door hard.

She might take the hint or but at least she won't speak to you any more either

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 18:23

I@ve never smoked and I can smell it from miles away too

Oh, Stripey, I wouldn't dream of telling them they can't smoke in their own garden or to smoke further away, I'm really not that unreasonable and they don't flick butts over the fence or anything. It's just one of those niggles that tells me I really ought to live in a huge detatched house with no neighbours. The other side have an irritating yapping rat of a dog and that irritates me too. I want to bark back and snarl at it

I@m far too scared of confrontation to actually do anything about it like many of these suggestions

I know exactly where you are comming from SoupDragon, I was siting in my garden today with my dd's & had to pick up ciggarette butts, there was about 6 in my garden, I realised it was the kids next door flicking them from their bedroom window I'm glad my dd's were not out playing at the time or I would have put it out in their eye!!! GRRRRRRRRR

Both sides smoke where I live its horrible

pay one of the DCs to shout loudly one day "mummy whats that stinky smell" so you can reply (just as loudly) its mrs x next door smoking. We'd better go in side

Or not..

hercules1 · 15/04/2007 18:41

I agree. I don't think smokers realise just how much they smell. A polo really doesn't get rid of it.

obimomkanobi · 15/04/2007 18:43

Maybe we like the smell.....

hercules1 · 15/04/2007 18:43

But I don't want to smell it!

The smell of stale smoke makes me feel quite queasy.

I am never one to moan about someone smoking and I couldn't care less if my neighbour smoked outsie or not. I'm an ex smoker (1yr 4months) and beleive that people have as much right not to smoke as they do to smoke.

However this is what I do take exception to and something I would have never ever done when I was a smoker...........I was at the train station on Thursday going to work and I sat on a bench with another lady, there was just enough room for one other person between us and sure enough along came this other lady, we moved our bags and she squished herself snuggly between us, within a second of her backside hitting the bench she had whipped out a fag and had lit up

I was fuming, as far as I am concerned you never ever go and sit next to someone on a bench and then light up, it's rude and disgusting. If you are smoking and someone chooses to sit next to you then fair enough but don't go next to someone then light up it's not rocket science is it?

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 15/04/2007 18:47

Mmmmm, the ratty yapping dog would annoy me more.

ScottishMummy · 15/04/2007 18:52

yes u are being completely unreasonable frankly but hey u have admitted so much

it is your neighbors patio
they have they right to do so - even if u dont like it

i am a non smoker but my wishes don't extend to adjacent properties

Dinosaur · 15/04/2007 18:58
