to expect my neighbours not to smoke on their patio on lovely sunny days because I can smell it and it's HORRIBLE

Of course, I am being unreasonable and I have absolutely no intention of suggesting they don't do it but it doesn't stop me grumbling to myself every time I get a whiff of cigarette smoke on my patio of in through the open kitchen door. It's so foul! I have no idea why people smoke at all, it's completely beyond me. It has to be one of the most antisocial habits in the world

I sympathise. I would feel much the same. A horrid smell and you know that your wanting them not to do it is unreasonable!

A double Whammy!

You can't even feel all put upon and justifiably upset about it

I'd hate it.

Go whack them with your tail!

Londonmamma · 15/04/2007 12:46

Get a pile of anti-smoking leaflets and put one through their letterbox every day.

After July 1st it's one of the very few places they will be able to smoke, sadly for you...

AnnabelCaramel · 15/04/2007 12:48

Get a big citronella patio candle and burn that. Keeps insects away and masks the smell of smoke quite well.

fortyplus · 15/04/2007 12:50

I suppose at least they're not indoors poisoning their children...

We went to the best pub ever on Friday night - sadly it's 4 hours away from here. The Black Bull Inn at Frosterley, Co. Durham. No smoking indoors or outside, great beer (no Lager) and a sign up saying that children were welcome if they were well behaved and didn't run around unsupervised or whinge.

Bliss!

DaisyMOO · 15/04/2007 12:55

The woman next door to us smokes so heavily that you can smell smoke if she justs stands outside in her garden without lighting up! I sympathise, it's not nice.

Grrrrrrrrrr....makes me mad!

Went to bracknell forest the other day and was so proud of how healthy we were getting fresh air and taking a ball and a picnic and it not costing us anything....when....the lady on the next picnic table lit up and puffed smoke EVERYWHERE!!!

I could have slapped her!!

6 cigarettes she had in total and it is foul. On a Summery day in the woods. I just didnt dare speak to her in case she hit me but I was NOT happy.

trillium · 15/04/2007 13:00

We were at a play-park on the seafront yesterday and I was surprised at the number of people smoking, and stubbing their cigarettes out on the ground [bleurgh emoticon]

All these children charging about and people holding cigarettes at child head height.

Dd nearly got one in the face

It really is disgusting

kimi · 15/04/2007 13:20

What REALLY REALLY pee's me off is trying to find a place to sit in the park or on the beach that has not been covered in fag ends by some brainless idiot to lazy to find a bin.

nappyaddict · 15/04/2007 13:24

roll on july!

FrannyandZooey · 15/04/2007 13:32

I know what you mean. When I was pregnant the woman next door used to smoke by the back door of her kitchen, and I used to have to run around shutting windows because it would come straight in my house and made me want to heave.

It doesn't bother me so much now I am not pregnant but I do see your point of view.

singingmum · 15/04/2007 13:35

Find a smell that she hates and then make sure that when you see her smoking burn a candle or find way to waft smell over at her.
Revenge can be sweet especially if the smell she hates is

kimi · 15/04/2007 13:39

Put dirty nappy bin next to the back fence nice and full, chuck on some fresh prawns for good measure then go away for a week

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 13:42

does no one think I'm unreasonable? Have I found something MN agrees on? [naive]

NuttyMuffins · 15/04/2007 13:44

At least yours is only cigarette smoke you can smell. Next door have a regular visitor that only smokes the wacky stuff and he stand in the back garden to do it, or on the front door step, so either my kitchen or hallway stink of the stuff.

kimi · 15/04/2007 13:47

Well its her garden and her lungs she's killing so I guess it is her right, but that does not make it any less unpleasant and nasty for you.

I can not wait till smoking in public places is banned, sadly this will not stop people in parks and beaches, and you will still get the hardcore thickos that scream "my civil rights are being infringed" because they can't smoke in the pub/restraunt/et.

FrannyandZooey · 15/04/2007 13:53

Well you kind of said that you don't actually expect her not to do it, just that you don't like it

I think we can agree that that is not unreasonable

kimi · 15/04/2007 13:59

Go to B&Q get a garden sprinkler and set it up in the wrong place to water your garden.........

OOOOOOPPPPPSSSSSSS.

joash · 15/04/2007 14:15

Although the July thing is good, it doesn't do enough - smoking should only be allowed in side their own homes.

SoupDragon · 15/04/2007 14:17

But this is Mumsnet, Franny. Someone should have come along by now and vociferously castigated me for even thinking that she should stop

fizzbuzz · 15/04/2007 14:29

Any suggestions for horrid people opposite me playing their awful rap music, full of swearing in practically every sentence at full blast?

beansprout · 15/04/2007 14:32

I agree with you too. I was going to say that smokers don't tend to care about other people but if they insist of making themselves and others around them ill with their filth, then the smell in the your garden will be the least of their concerns I suppose.

I cannnot wait until it is banned. Awful stuff.

kimi · 15/04/2007 16:50

Fizzbuzz....... Get some Des O'Conner or Max Bygraves recoards and beg, borrow or steal the biggest set of speakers you can find.

OK SoupDragon just to make you happy and this more like the mumsnet we know and love......

You are being very unreasonable, the poor woman may have issues you know nothing about, it is wrong wrong wrong to look down and judge others, she has rights, you are being smokest and I have reported you to mumsnet HQ. blah blah blah blah........
Hope you feel better now.

electra · 15/04/2007 16:53

Yes, I could have written the OP myself. Smoking is, indeed anti-social. My MIL informed me that it is now banned in all public places in Wales, including pubs! Here's to hoping the same thing happens in England too - if it's in the pipe line I can't wait!
