I've tried to like it, I mean it's cheap as anything but, every single time I buy meat specifically chicken it smells vile! Like it's gone off and it's rubbery 😷
This isn't just the one Aldi I've been to lots around my area and out of it and it's all the fucking same! That's another load straight in the bin and I'm off to Sainsbury's tomorrow.

So AIBU and picky or has anybody else experienced this?

Loving the 'just go to a local butcher' type comments. There is no butcher in my town. There are a couple in the next town, b7t they are of the pre-packed dodgy meat coated in 'Chinese'/'barbecue'etc powder. Meat all arrived pre-cut and pre-packed. Not a nice local butcher at all. And as for Asda - our nearest one is a disgrace. It's not that old and is in a large town centre. And it's rubbish. Even my MIL who lives alone and eats like a bird, caneget a full weeks shop in there.
Our nearest Aldi is lovely. Meat, fish etc all very good. Fruit and veg last ages - in fact dsis and I were discussing this the other day and wondered whether it was treated in some way as even the strawberries last forever. And on top of that is the aisle of random crap. Who could ask for more?

Notso · 16/10/2017 21:51

I think supermarket meat in general is shit, M&S chicken is probably the worst I've had.
Morrisons butchers counter is ok, but not a patch on my local butcher.

I find Aldi and Lidl on the whole are like shopping in another country. Some items are lovely, some items are awful, the rest not quite as good as your used to and it's a relief to get back to more familiar foods.

I don't like Aldi for the simple fact that it sounds like Mouldy. Grin

SleepFreeZone · 16/10/2017 21:53

I'm a fan of Iceland.

GlitterGlue · 16/10/2017 21:57

I think they're generally fine. Tend to cook from scratch so only being able to buy the basics is fine. The fruit and veg isn't any worse than other supermarkets. I'll use up veg in soup or a stew so it not looking brand new at the end of the week isn't an issue.

There are a few things I can't get there, but they're things I can't get from a big supermarket either.

AnnabelleLecter · 16/10/2017 21:58

I agree, I really hate Aldi. Horrid place to food shop.
It's no cheaper over all, the fruit and veg is rotting on the shelves.

I once was told that they are timed to do everything which is why they sling your shopping at you at the checkout.

Not a nice way to treat staff and do business imo.

Awful shop, I quite like food shopping but not in Aldi.
Don't mind most of the other supermarkets: Tesco, Co-op, Sainsbury's, occasionally Iceland but we mainly shop at M&S plus local butchers, deli and bakers

SoupDragon · 16/10/2017 22:01

Meh. I've never had rotting fruit and off meat from my local Aldi.

I've had both from Waitrose though :o

GlitterGlue · 16/10/2017 22:01

Ive been to quite a few Aldi's and Lidl's and I've genuinely never seen fruit and veg rotting on the shelves.

TJ2503 · 16/10/2017 22:02

I bloody love Aldi - we have had a fab new shiney one open up 5 mins away and I have noticed it stocks way more variety of produce than my old store (25 mins away).... it even has a customer loo!! Have even managed to convert my husband primarily because they do a stellenbosh for £6

SoupDragon · 16/10/2017 22:02

In what accent?

HarryPottersBroomstick · 16/10/2017 22:03

I actually like the fact they chuck stuff down the conveyor belt at lightening speed! Open 3/4 large sturdy carriers in trolley and chuck the stuff in! Put delicates to one side.

Hate hate slow check out staff in other supermarkets now. Takes ages!!

Also like the fact they have only a few options of each product. I cannot be bothered to choose from 20 types of tea, 50 types of cheddar etc.

Get in, get round, get out. If you forget something it's not half a mile away like at ASDA.

Guess I'm converted Grin

I have a choice of Aldi shops all within 20 mins drive. I like 3 of them. I shop there weekly and get the bulk of my shopping there. I save money shopping there and we eat well. I don't have any issues with the meat or fruit and veg.
But each to their own. If we all liked the same supermarkets then there wouldn't be so many different ones. I personally have never set foot in Waitrose and can't see me ever needing to/ wanting to.

Ironfloor · 16/10/2017 22:04

I shop at Aldi. I love it. I hardly ever have to shop elsewhere as Aldi stocks everything on my list.

Op, do you work for Tesco? Or precisely, are you employed by Tesco/Sainsburys/Asda to negatively speak of Aldi on internet fora? 😀

Serin · 16/10/2017 22:04

I get most things in Aldi but you are dead right about their chicken fillets. I have returned them twice to Aldi and once to Sainsbury's because they were off.

I don't buy prepacked chicken breasts from anywhere other than our local butchers now. It is more expensive but worth it.

user1471443504 · 16/10/2017 22:06

Oh and the packing thing is not a problem. Put stuff on conveyor belt in order of heaviness and leave meat until the end. Large blue Ikea bag opened out in the trolley and load it all at the till as they scan so you finish with bread etc on the top. Separate bag for life for meat. Easy.

xrayyankeezulu · 16/10/2017 22:07

No - it's shite!!

expatinscotland · 16/10/2017 22:08

Wish we had an Aldi!

pp2017 · 16/10/2017 22:10

@user1471443504 YES!! This is what I do 😆

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 16/10/2017 22:12

Do you say Al (to rhyme with pal)-dee or awl-dee? Wondering how it sounds like mouldy.

DanHumphreyIsA · 16/10/2017 22:12

I’ve had the same issue with lamb from Asda, twice. It smelled absolutely rotten and was a brownish colour rather than pink.

I go to a butchers now for meat, and have recently started shopping at lidl/aldi, and my bill is a third of what it used to be at other supermarkets. I haven’t had anything bad from there, yet .

user263781638 · 16/10/2017 22:12

Nope can honestly say I do not work for any form of supermarket, if I did I would shop there straight after my shift as I wouldn't have to take my tornado kids with me.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 16/10/2017 22:13

FFS Don't GO then if it's THAT bad.

I don't - I can still have an opinion.

KittyB52 · 16/10/2017 22:15

I don’t mind Aldi stuff but the actual shops (at least, the ones by us) are a bit dire. I don’t know if it’s the lighting, layout, or decor, but it’s all a bit gloomy and grim.

I worked for Aldi before I went to uni - this was back when you had to memorise the prices. Good pay at the time, but at the end of each day, all cashiers had to put a trolley of shopping through and get the price right. And if one got it wrong, you had to redo it until you were all right. I couldn’t do it now, I can barely remember my mobile number. Grin

I wouldn’t mind Waitrose, but they are scarce in my neck of the woods. The one I used to go to near work smelled faintly of wee. Hmm

roses2 · 16/10/2017 22:15

I love Aldi but only at 8/9am midweek morning otherwise it's hell on earth. I buy everything except meat from there although their specially selected beef is good.

Their products tend to have a very short shelf life. I can never find a loaf of bread that expires more than 3 days later.

AllToadsLeadToHome · 16/10/2017 22:17

I have seen rotten produce in Lidl, but have also had mouldy berries from Waitrose, the difference was that the berries were underneath the good ones in the pack. The Lidl stuff was in the stacked boxes.

In one Lidl I could smell the stinking chicken before anyone opened the fridge door, it was horrible.

Tesco isn't great on dates either, have to check them carefully.
