I've tried to like it, I mean it's cheap as anything but, every single time I buy meat specifically chicken it smells vile! Like it's gone off and it's rubbery 😷
This isn't just the one Aldi I've been to lots around my area and out of it and it's all the fucking same! That's another load straight in the bin and I'm off to Sainsbury's tomorrow.

So AIBU and picky or has anybody else experienced this?

And instant coffee.

For an instant, their "barista" stuff in the silver tin is pretty good. I buy it for making coffee at dull sporting things with the kids. Better than the Nescafe they had on offer to make your own coffee with! (But not as good as ground from a coffee machine)

spookshowbaby · 17/10/2017 08:28

Always had a problem in Aldi with chicken often but the big pack of chicken breasts as it's a good price but more often than not have to end up throwing away. I moved to Tesco still get my shopping for the same price - just have to be savvy with deals make sure your getting the best one, checking weights of food etc. Their magazine is great for coupons too. I've already managed to clock up enough points on my card to take a decent amount off my Christmas shop !

BakedBeans47 · 17/10/2017 08:30

soupdragon maybe it’s how they store it before it goes on the shelf. It’s been consistent problems as well not just one offs. And yet my husband keeps buying the bloody milk!

JackieMac77 · 17/10/2017 08:35

Not keen on the shopping experience in Aldi but the wine is good and cheap. I could never do a full shop there, but I do admit I like my familiar brands and don't have the time or inclination to experiment with alternatives.

Theresamayscough · 17/10/2017 08:38

Gosh op no our Aldi’s is fantastic. Clean as a pin and lovely staff. Never had any problem with the chicken or any of the meat. Their pizzas are amazing, fish too.

With 6 adults here 3 of them teens it’s a god send and far cheaper than Tesco/sainsburys.

Ajways had problems with sell by dates st Asda so that’s why switched to Aldi’s.

I think the meat is pretty universal supplied anyway just in different packing?

Orangeplastic · 17/10/2017 08:38

I've had chicken from Waitrose that has smelled rank and that has happened more than once or twice!

mintich · 17/10/2017 08:41

The alcohol is good!! I also love their baby events and have got some great brand name goods....chairs, dummies, toys etc

Theresamayscough · 17/10/2017 08:43

I have had awful meat and rotten vegs from Waitrose too.

See so man different experiences here I there must be differences store by store

sinceyouask · 17/10/2017 08:45

I love aldi. Costs a hell of a lot less than asda, I can get everything I want ther other than two or three things like the bread fussy dh wants, have never had a problem with the quality or freshness of food.

DumbledoresArmy · 17/10/2017 08:47

Wow some of us are passionate about hating Aldi!!

I want to love Aldi but I get annoyed that they don’t have half of what I want!
Last shop they had no Semi milk!! (Store assistant said ‘oh we’ve just had a delivery you’ll have to wait for them to be put out’ so I replied ‘when will this happen’ I got ‘ I dunno’)

No freezer bags & no porridge oats!!

Also packs of cobs labelled up 2 months out of date... no kidding! This was pointed out to staff but was ignored!

Waitrose is hardly a shit hole btw lol 😂

whiskyowl · 17/10/2017 08:52

I love Aldi, but I'm veggie so I think all meat is absolutely vile anyway.

brasty · 17/10/2017 08:55

ALDI has stopped doing steak mince, so I no longer buy mince there.

Crinkle77 · 17/10/2017 08:57

It's not actually cheaper. It is all own brand. If you bought all own brand in other supermarkets it would come out similar.

This the way I feel about Aldi/Lidl etc... I buy a lot of supermarket own brand stuff anyway so have never found them to be that much cheaper. Some things are good in there. I really like Aldi's gammon joints but there are other things that are horrible. The chewing gum is cheap but the flavour goes out of them really quick and I don't think much of the fruit or veg. I go there for a change sometimes but don't rate it particularly.

brasty · 17/10/2017 08:58

There seems to be a lot of difference between ALDI stores from what people say on here. Ours is big and great.
I sometimes think though it is better for people who cook from scratch, which we mostly do. I do a full shop there. Veg, fruit, dairy products, toiletries, fish and meat. The only thing I get elsewhere is nice bread locally, and stocking up on things like bottles of fish sauce.

redsunstorm · 17/10/2017 09:00

I'm a recent Aldi convert and love it...I only went a few weeks ago to get nappies based on mumsnet recommendations and have popped in several times a week since.
My very fussy cat loves the 19p cat food, the £1.49 maple and caramel fudge is amazing, and at last have found nappies that don't leak at £2.19 for a huge pack!

Frillyhorseyknickers · 17/10/2017 09:03

We are farmers and rear poultry. We have a supply contract with both Waitrose and with Aldi. They are exactly the same chickens, so YABVU.

Sainsbury's is actually one of very few supermarkets who doesn't endorse the red tractor standard and it's a fact that their meat is substandard to both Aldi and Lidl.

I think people like to be derogatory about Lidl and Aldi as they are budget supermarkets, but when you're paying £1 for your tinned tomatoes and I'm paying 20p - who's the real moron?

brasty · 17/10/2017 09:10

Thanks. I buy the free range chicken at ALDI and have always been happy with it.

bluebells1 · 17/10/2017 09:11

I am with you OP. I much prefer Lidl because they have a better bakery Grin I prefer the Lacura serums from Aldi though...

Usernamechecksout · 17/10/2017 09:11

Aldi's fruit and veg always come out as having the highest levels of pesticide out of all supermarkets when tested... no thanks, I think I'll pass!

M4Dad · 17/10/2017 09:12

Do you have a link for that please?

user263781638 · 17/10/2017 09:13

We have 7 yes that's 7 Aldi's within a 10 mile radius of our house two of them are brand new and 1.5 miles away from their older store Hmm I have been to every single one and all of them have their meat, mainly chicken problem 😷
My DH isn't fussy in the slightest but wouldn't eat his last chicken meal from there I made neither would my daughter and tbh I didn't even attempt it because it looked so awful even more so knowing it smelt funny when I opened it.
We don't have as many Lidl's so can't comment on them and our closest Waitrose is 35 miles away... can you guess our area!?

brasty · 17/10/2017 09:14

Marks and Spencers actually has then highest level of pesticides.

Ducknose · 17/10/2017 09:17

I wish there was an Aldi local to me!
I don't eat meat but cook it for others, I would've thought all meat is hit and miss and they use the same suppliers anyway.
Lidl has my holy grail bakery. Far, far superior to other supermarket offerings (apart from maybe M&S), their patisserie actually tastes authentic.

amusedbush · 17/10/2017 09:17

I used to shop at Aldi and then I moved away and switched to Tesco for convenience. I recently went out of my way two weeks in a row to shop at Aldi to see if I could get my food bill down and I spent exactly the same as I normally do at Tesco, except the milk and 80% of my fruit and veg went off three days later.

I bought a pack of root veg and a gammon to make lentil soup, as I do quite frequently. When I shop at Tesco I get six days of lunches out of a big pot of it. Using the Aldi ingredients it was sour on the third day - and their stuff was more expensive than Tesco's!

user263781638 · 17/10/2017 09:17

That link has somerfield on it, that's been gone a long time now.
