I've tried to like it, I mean it's cheap as anything but, every single time I buy meat specifically chicken it smells vile! Like it's gone off and it's rubbery 😷
This isn't just the one Aldi I've been to lots around my area and out of it and it's all the fucking same! That's another load straight in the bin and I'm off to Sainsbury's tomorrow.

So AIBU and picky or has anybody else experienced this?

I always thought ALDI fruit and veg went off quicker because it had less chemicals on it.

Ansumpasty · 17/10/2017 09:22

YANBU, the chicken smells like fart. Tesco is often similar. I used to think this was normal until I started buying it from Sainsbury's and it never has a fart smell from there, or any smell at all.

Theresamayscough · 17/10/2017 09:26

As Frilly says the meat is universal so aldi meat is the same as sainsburys.

I think the only whiff here is the whiff of snobbery which is bloody hilarious considering no one knows who anyone is on her in RL.

nannybeach · 17/10/2017 09:27

Rlatest chicken scandle Aldi Tesco and Waitrose all had from the same source. I have bought items from other stores in sell by dates, and have blatently been "off". Used to shop in Morrisons, got fed up with going Monday morning 9 am shelves bare, row in middle of store with nasty manager regarding purchase I returned, hes not there anymore, and nor am I. Started shopping in Aldi 10 years ago, always found assistants pleasant and helpfull. Sainsbury, the other morning 8.30, hardly the crack of dawn, not one till open, bar the self-service, I had a trolley full of shopping and balancing it on the silly little space was a nightmare. There are a few things I am unable to get in Aldi specialist milk for DH, this particular day, dogfood I buy was on special. When I met him we had a Tesco nearby, no car, so had to shop there, but he wouldnt let me buy Tescos own brands. A few years, 2 mortgages and 4 kids, he realised you have to cut the suit according to your cloth. We shopped in Lidl for many years. Apart from the bakery, I much prefer Aldi. Did a click and collect in Boots at Waitrose, they didnt have the basics I wanted, staff were unhelpful, uninterested. DH just bought Rachels giner yogurt, think they forgot to put the ginger in, Aldis greek yogurt with ginger had chunks of the stuff. Muller corner lemon yogurt nearly £3 in Sainsbury, Aldi own much nicer and less than half the price.Frillyhorseyknickers I love you,!!

ChristmasFluff · 17/10/2017 09:27

I shop at Lidl, so not a snob!

My experience - Aldi's fruit and veg goes off very quickly. Aldi's 'fresh' pizza is mouldy by the time you get it home. Would never shop there again.

brasty · 17/10/2017 09:30

I shop at ALDI and LIDL. I like different things about them.My biggest complaint is that ALDI stopped selling steak mince. I only buy mince if it is steak mince.

nannybeach · 17/10/2017 09:32

If you have 7 Aldis near your home, just proves they are doing really well, no-one else is opening new shops at their rate.

user263781638 · 17/10/2017 09:35

I am not a snob! If I could do my full un smelly shop at Aldi I would! It's so much easier asker to fly around with kids and not have them distracted with random shitty toys in other stores.
I'm being genuine, it's a massive problem to me and like I said I think it's the was it's stored! I am well aware most places use the same products.

I don't get the love for Aldi, their fruit and veg is usually rubbish. I went there last week as I only wanted mushrooms and I was passing Aldi. Thought it would save me time rather than trekking to Tesco or Sainsbury.

All the packs of mushrooms looked pretty ropey with the supposed white mushrooms all going brown. I picked the best looking pack and it had a use by date 4 days after the date I was buying.

Went to use them the next day and they were far worse than I had thought and under the top ones there were quite a few mouldy ones. I buy mushrooms just about every week (from M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury's or the market) and have never seen a mouldy one before.

I had to throw a lot away (bearing in mind they should have lasted another 3 days).

I emailed Aldi and their response was to say if I took the packaging and receipt back to store they would refund me! The fuel to get there and back would be more than the £1.35 the mushrooms cost.

I bought some mushrooms on Saturday in Sainsbury's with only 2 days use by date. They were lovely and white, no mouldy ones, no brown ones. Even better the same size pack was 85p! So cheaper than Aldi.

I won't be going back to Aldi any time soon. Oh and for those who buy their brioche burger buns - they are actually cheaper in M&S

MusicToMyEars800 · 17/10/2017 09:42

It's hit and miss with Aldi, I liked their cheddar and the kids like the yogurts, The meats such as salami, chorizo etc I quite nice, bread is ok. I couldn't finish the Norpak butter, it tasted really weird.

I didn't like their Ketchup, Mayo etc neither did the kids or DP.

I got some fish from their it smelt horrendous and made the fridge stink same with meat, so I don't get those from there.

I shop with Morrisons, The cost stays low and food is good, including fresh meat and fish.

Bratsy
that link is from 2004 when there was still Safeways!

brasty · 17/10/2017 09:44

Sorry, just did a quick google.

Willow2017 · 17/10/2017 09:45

I find Morrisons fish often smells, you can smell it before you get to the counter which is not good, fish shouldnt smell of anything. And their wrapped stuff goes off really quickly if you dont freeze it right away.

MusicToMyEars800 · 17/10/2017 09:49

Willow Confused Maybe it really does make a difference depending on the store, I've never had a problem, I do tend to buy more frozen fish than fresh, But haven't had any problems when I do buy fresh.

I agree fish shouldn't smell of anything, If it's fresh.

I shop at Aldi for main shop and occasionally Lidl, both of which are great where I live. No problems at all with quality and they obviously stock some interesting non food items, which seem to change from week to week. Obviously it's not possible to get everything there so I top up in Asda but it's definitely cheaper than the larger chain stores (albeit definitely noticing that food prices are generally on the rise).

FlandersRocks · 17/10/2017 09:54

I'm not a fan of Aldi. They sell too much IMO - like they're trying to be a cheap Tesco.

I don't want a cheap Tesco, I want a supermarket that's quick to get around with less products to distract me.

I prefer Lidl, as long as you avoid the middle aisle of stuff it's great.

BinkyandBunty · 17/10/2017 10:08

This is fascinating, because I'm in Australia and have also had to give up on buying chicken from my local Aldi. It's always off before the use by date. Obviously a worldwide problem!

I've had the same issue with their milk so I'm pretty sure it's their refrigeration and storage.

Still love the place though!

SoupDragon · 17/10/2017 10:46

Obviously a worldwide problem!

Although only in random places around the world for some reason 😂

mydogisthebest · 17/10/2017 11:08

I am certainly no snob when it comes to shopping, whether it be food, clothes etc.

I will shop anywhere that is reasonably priced but has good quality and Aldi doesn't. Their wine is good but so is Lidl's and Lidl's fruit and veg is far better quality plus they have a bakery.

Washing powder, shower gel, shampoo etc are pretty good but often cheaper in places like Wilkinson and Pound shops.

I can't get a full shop in Aldi either which is really annoying as the store in my town is nowhere near any other shops.

Theresamayscough · 17/10/2017 11:55

I don’t really think it’s snobbery for the most part although some people do seem to have money to burn at Waitrose and M&S but I think it really is a store by store culture as I have been in some crap sainsburys and some lovely ones and ditto most of the other stores mentioned.

Welwyncitydweller · 17/10/2017 12:02

A friend worked in procurement for a classic British store that has a food hall, and she knows that this store and Aldi share many of the same suppliers. True I can’t get everything there and like to be able to buy veg or fruit in ones or twos but had a fabulous leg of lamb from the chiller at the weekend. I disagree that own label supermarket shop would be as cheap - value range maybe.

Stormwhale · 17/10/2017 12:06

I stopped shopping and Lidl and Aldi because of this issue. I got fed up of wasting money on meat that was rancid. I assumed it must be a problem in the way it was being transported or stored to cut costs.

EssentialHummus · 17/10/2017 12:12

I alternate Lidl and Aldi with Ocado, out of preference rather than a need to cut costs. I’ve not experienced quality issues as others have. Occasionally a piece of fruit or vegetable will look ropey instore And I’ll swerve it, at home their stuff lasts as well as others’.

fedupoflivinglikethis · 17/10/2017 12:36

I had chicken from aldi that smelt vile! Luckily I don't eat it and DH said it tasted fine..

user263781638 · 17/10/2017 13:18

Don't get me wrong I've had a few dodgy chickens from Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's etc. It happens, I get it. But every single time I've been to Aldi this has happened at one point I was even questioning myself imagining it until I got my DD to smell it, her expression said it all.. she's 8 so isn't just a toddler thinking she's funny.
Oh and as others have said I've also had brown mince meat, I just assumed it was blood pooling but I guess not Hmm seems it's a problem in our area 😷
