So... I'm in a group (totally unrelated to TTC) and there happens to be a lady in there who does fertility readings. She and I got chatting, I explained I am TTC and she pointed me over to her tarot page. She has pages and pages of reviews from people whose pregnancies she has correctly predicted, both conception months and due date months etc. She ran a competition for a free 10 card reading and I won. I have received my reading and am devastated. She has told me that I have some medical issues relating to fertility, and that the liklihood is that I will need medical intervention to conceive and that even then, I am unlikely to have a baby with my partner.
This has really, really upset me. Things she mentioned in the reading are so accurate in other aspects that it's ridiculous, so I am convinced that she's right about the whole lot.
I don't even know why I'm posting but I guess I just need a few virtual slaps and to be told to get a grip of myself Sad

Honestly now get a god damn grip. Tarot cards? No no no

FuckMyUterus · 14/10/2017 09:39

mess I know, I am normally the most sceptical person ever, but the blunt way in which she put it has really gotten to me.
She is not selling anything, and has nothing to gain from making these claims. Either she really genuinely believes it's true or she's just a hurtful nasty person who wants to make others upset. I have no idea which but either way, I am in major snowflake mode after this.

relevantstuff · 14/10/2017 09:41

YABU. It's utter bollocks .

Trills · 14/10/2017 09:43

Either she really genuinely believes it's true or she's just a hurtful nasty person who wants to make others upset.

Neither of these is particularly helpful to you, is it?

She still doesn't know anything.

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2017 09:43

The NHS is strapped for cash.

To get checked out for fertility issues requires numerous expensive procedures.

Do you think, if there were even the teeniest evidence for tarot readings being useful predictors/pointers to fertility issues, or any other health matter, that the NHS wouldn't be trialling/using cheap tarot readings rather than expensive tests?

I actually doubt the morality of anyone who would be doing anything like this. Avoid her - on-line and in person - at base, she is a corrupt person.

dudsville · 14/10/2017 09:44

You may or may not have difficulties ahead of this sort but she does not know this. I wonder if she's tapped in to your own fears on the matter. Keep away from woo if you're feeling vulnerable.

FuckMyUterus · 14/10/2017 09:46

relevant I thought the same, but she knew things, like how many months we have been ttc which only me and my partner know. (we haven't shared that information with anyone as we started ttc very early on in our relationship and others wouldnt have approved)
Like I say a bit of a pointless post but I feel a lot of replies telling me how ridiculous I'm being might hit it home.

OP posts:
SoftlyCatchyMonkey1 · 14/10/2017 09:46

OP....ignore ignore ignore

She's knows literally nothing about your fertility

SaucyJack · 14/10/2017 09:46

She may well believe that it's true.

But you know, and I know, and everybody else knows, that it's insane to believe that some cards plucked at random from a deck with genuinely be able to access your private medical information, and make a correct prognosis.

Please don't let it spoil your morning.

fc301 · 14/10/2017 09:47

Or she wants you to fork out for more readings...
Kindly... you need to get a grip. This is utter bollocks. She’s either a nutter or supremely cynical, neither of which places your best interests high.
And am I the only one who finds it suspicious you ‘won’ this draw??

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2017 09:47

She does get something out of it.

Whatever it is that she gets out of it may not be immediately clear.

She may not, necessarily, be running a business. It may be something strange, such as ego-gratification. It may be a weird sense of power over others (which she may or may not acknowledge to herself). It may even be an assuaging of the sense that she is merely one person on an over-crowded planet, circling a dying star, at the edge of an essentially meaningless universe and the replacement of that by a system of belief that tells her she is special, in touch with a 'secret' truth.

Who knows?

It's still all utter bollocks.

Harry Potter is a fantastic work of fiction. However, tarot reading is not something you study for 'A' level. For a reason.

CaptainHarville · 14/10/2017 09:47

What a horrible woman! Anyone getting tarrot card readings over fertility are likely to be the ones for whom conception is taking that little bit longer than they would like. If you got pregnant the first month you wouldn't bother. Have you posted anything online that she could have read and then discovered in her readings? Honestly anyone doing this has no regard for other people.

FuckMyUterus · 14/10/2017 09:47

I think either way, having been ttc for almost 18 months a trip to the doctor is in order anyway.

OP posts:
HerOtherHalf · 14/10/2017 09:47

She is not selling anything, and has nothing to gain from making these claims.

She's gaining having her ego boosted, people buying into her belief in this bullshit gift she thinks she has. It's fucking disgusting. Even if there is no malice intended on her part, she is gambling with the emotions of people many of whom will be extremely emotionally vulnerable.

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2017 09:49

... and the human brain focuses in on things that correlate, and (often) filters things that don't.

You remember the things that were 'true' - but I'll bet you've forgotten the stuff that wasn't.

FuckMyUterus · 14/10/2017 09:50

fc301 I did think the same, was unsure if I was being paranoid, but wondered why on earth she would choose me out of 3k+ people when she doesn't know me, isn't even resident in the same country and clearly has hundreds of people who have had positive readings.

OP posts:
ShowMePotatoSalad · 14/10/2017 09:51

She has played on your fears in order to get you to believe her.

Google "cold reading". It will explain how supposed psychics are able to tell you things to what seems like a higher degree of accuracy that what it actually is. Derren Brown has completely debunked psychic readings as well.

Think about it this way: She has told you something that could or not could turn out to be true. No one knows if they can conceive naturally until they try. If you get pregnant you won't care that she was wrong. If you can't conceive without IVF you will assume she really was a psychic, when it reality it is the type of thing that could happen to anyone.

The title of your thread is "I know IABU" so focus on that logic and don't allow a conwoman to freak you out.

HerOtherHalf · 14/10/2017 09:52

I think either way, having been ttc for almost 18 months a trip to the doctor is in order anyway

Professional medical support versus charlatans with supposed supernatural powers? You know what makes sense. Forget whatever she told you and speak to your doctor. Very best wishes and fingers crossed for you.

Trills · 14/10/2017 09:53

Are you saying that you think there might be something in it?

You know there isn't.

All of the other explanations - that it's a lucky guess, that she's decided to target you and stalk you online - they may sound improbable, but they are at least possible.

ILoveMillhousesDad · 14/10/2017 09:54

Oh ffs. Utter fucking bollocks. Get your rational head on. Do you really think an individual has the 'power' to know specifically what is going on with yours and your partners reproductive organs!!!!

thecatfromjapan · 14/10/2017 09:54

And yes, it probably is worth going to see your GP. It takes a long time to get the ball rolling (I think in our neck of the woods, you have to have been TTC for 2 years before any investigations start), so worth getting somewhere near the waiting lists.

AlternativeTentacle · 14/10/2017 09:55

Gosh, she needs to get herself to a hospital and start diagnosing! Fucking hell, how much could we all save on hospital equipment and staff?

clearly has hundreds of people who have had positive readings

She publishes the ones that turned out to be coincidental. Like the Lottery predictions by Derren Brown.

FuckMyUterus · 14/10/2017 09:57

Thanks for all the replies. Like I've said, I am normally very sceptical of things like this and would normally pay no attention but I think she's managed to catch me at a low point and play on my emotions. Still have no idea why someone would be so unbelievably vile as to do this, takes all sorts I suppose.

OP posts:
Whinesalot · 14/10/2017 09:57

I thought psychics weren't morally supposed to tell you bad news.

Anyway it really is all a load of crap. She knows you're struggling or you wouldn't have asked her.

Get to the doctor and start investigations.

YouMeanNothing · 14/10/2017 09:58

In the kindest way you were foolish to get involved in anything like this especially concerning a specific issue so sensitive to you. I agree with fc301 and suspect you're not the only one who just happened to 'win' the draw. It's also highly likely all those favourable reviews are fake. In any case I wish you the best with ttc and don't let yourself be affected by this crap
