Harvey Weinstein

Rumours have been circulating about this disgusting man and his sleazy casting couch for years... He has offered a half-hearted apology, but seems rather smug about the fact that his family are supporting him.

AIBU to think his wife is misguided? What sort of example is she setting to her daughter? After all, this isn't a one-off - it is a pattern of serious abuse of women over decades.

FFS, this is NOT political. The right has sleazebags - Trump, O'Reilly, Savile. The left has sleazebags - Weinstein, Cosby, Clinton.

You know what these people have in common? THEY ARE MEN! This is the politics we should be talking about.

They operate in a world where women don't have equal status, power, or rights. They operate in a world where it's OK for them to trade favours from their position in order to demean women as sexual objects.

guilty100 · 11/10/2017 13:31

(Oh, and I'm not saying that all men are sleazes. They aren't. But most sleazes are men).

DeleteOrDecay · 11/10/2017 13:33

I agree guilty the one thing most perpetrators of sexual assault and violence have in common is that the large majority of them are men.

No one likes to acknowledge this for some reason.

reflexfaith · 11/10/2017 13:34

Urghh, I just want to punch Ben Affleck in the face watching that video

KERALA1 · 11/10/2017 13:40

Jessicake your musing about what Damon or Affleck would do if their own 20 year old dd was invited to a private meeting in a hotel with HW or similar brought to mind that scene in Erin Brokovich when she served the lawyers defending the polluting company glasses of water and as they started drinking it told them it came from the polluted town. They all spat it out. That.

Getout21 · 11/10/2017 13:42

Will we ever have equality? I'm thinking no ☹️

guilty100 · 11/10/2017 13:53

getout - yes, yes we will. An optimist might look at this whole scandal and say - this is a symptom of how things are changing precisely because women are standing up, more and more. There's a long way to go, however.

To me, this is about recognising the many types of power that can exist - cultural power, institutional power, financial power to name three key types. Someone can be wealthy but not powerful institutionally. Someone can be powerful institutionally but not wealthy. Someone can be powerful culturally but neither wealthy nor institutionally influential.

To my mind, in this scandal we have a bunch of women with wealth and cultural power, but not much institutional power, and a guy who has a bunch of institutional and financial capital, and less cultural capital. Because studios are so fundamental to movie financing and production and distribution - because institutional power is essentially the thing that gets translated into cultural power and movie earnings for actors - Weinstein could exert power over those who depended on the institutions he ran for their living. His financial capital also alllowed him to buy, bully, or blackmail his way out of scandals when someone tried to expose him. That's basically a very dangerous kind of impunity.

How do we break this? Giving more people - and particularly more women - more institutional power would be a really good start. In my opinion, one type of inequality (the lack of women at the top of many professions) easily breeds others. All kinds of sexism are interconnected here.

This story has made my blood boil and the continuous victim blaming in the press, I haven't much to add but this thread is an interesting read.

Shadow666 · 11/10/2017 14:06

Just finished Ronan Fartow’s article on this. Very nicely written.

CoolCarrie · 11/10/2017 14:06

I think it's all come out now because his brother had enough of paying off the women who accused him, their mother died recently, and Obama's daughter was in the company as an intern, so it finally had to stop.
Too much money had been spent on silencing the victims and the brother decided to cut his ties, all about money, not moral stands I think.

Fluffybrain · 11/10/2017 14:07

Ben Affleck appears to be drunk in that clip. It reminds me of a quote about him from Gwyneth Paltrow. I think she once said that his ideal woman was a hooker with a beer in each hand.

CoolCarrie · 11/10/2017 14:08

Spot on guilty!

guilty100 · 11/10/2017 14:08

That's absolutely true Carrie - but none of it would have worked if we had a climate where male behaviour like that was just accepted in some workplaces (which it was, for years). Shifts in the wider climate governing ideas of what is acceptable/excusable play a role here.

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 14:11

It's disgusting but not surprising how many male stars knew this was happening to their female colleagues but kept their lips shut. I've known a few people, including myself, who've faced that kind of behaviour at work and my experience has been that people, particularly male colleagues, are quite happy to turn a blind eye.
I'm wondering why this has suddenly blown up now. I wonder who he's pissed off. I say that because my aunt was the victim of sexual assault by a senior diplomat. Her career totally stalled and no one believed her. Fifteen years later the newspapers (in the US) published a series of allegations about this guy, including sexual harassment. It wasn't that suddenly people were believing the victims, but that someone very powerful wanted him out of his job so fed this stuff to a reporter. My aunt would go into a work and find people coming up to her and say 'oh now we believe you, we thought you were making it up!) and my aunt wanted to say f&@k off!

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 14:11

My point is it's no accident this guy has suddenly been exposed.

guilty100 · 11/10/2017 14:13

@MissEliza - you might find the post by @CoolCarrie useful! As far as I can make out, she's spot on.

gluteustothemaximus · 11/10/2017 14:16

Sorry haven't RTFT. But am so angered by this story.

All my life I have had sexual harassment either at work, or out with friends. Fucking sick of it. Fucking sick of women getting treated like this. Whether it's catcalling, rubbing up against you, groping, lewd comments, and men get away with it every single day.

And here he is now off to wherever to get treatment for his 'sex addiction'. No, he's just a typical pervert, in a position of power.

I've renamed him Harvey Wankstain.

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 14:23

Yes Guilty that seems very credible. Also Gluteus I feel the same way. It seems men only care when it affects their wives or girlfriends e.g. Brad Pitt. Some women are fucking useless too. I was asked out by a married father of one of my pupils when I was 23. I reported to it to my headmistress, because I didn't think I should put up with that at work, and she said I must have lead him on! I wasn't even expecting action from the school but I thought the school management should be aware of it.

Justbreathing · 11/10/2017 14:24

Laura Bates, whose Everyday Sexism project did a huge amount to change the way sexual harassment is talked about, has some stark detail on this, having done a joint research project with the TUC: “When women do report sexual harassment, the outcomes are terrible. Over two-thirds of young women are experiencing sexual harassment in the workplace now, today. Eighty per cent of them felt unable to report it, but three-quarters of the ones who did said that nothing changed afterwards, and 16% said that the situation got worse.”

This from the guardian article. So fucking true.

MissEliza · 11/10/2017 14:29

It's so fucking depressing that this is still the situation in 2017.

DarthMaiden · 11/10/2017 14:31

@MissEliza

HW got away with his abuse for so long because he was able to silence his victims, either through threats/intimidation, career curtailment or legal settlements.

As such, whilst rumours of his behaviour were widely known, “proving” what he had done was incredibly difficult. Women who had signed legal agreements were not just actresses, but company employees etc some of whom had since left the industry.

How exactly did the NYT track these women down? How did they know about the settlements?

It’s not exactly a massive leap to suggest they may have been leaked by the only people who would have categorically known about them - Executives at MiraMax and latterly the Weinstien Company.

There are rumours circling that his brother allegedly may have been instrumental in this. A number of reasons have been suggested - it gave him leverage to take over the company, he was fed up at the cost of the settlements, he felt it was only a matter of time before HW was exposed - so better to be done on their terms/timing, their mother had just died so any reason to standby HW had now now disappeared.

Thing is - there’s one big thing that’s missing from that list isn’t there? Note that no-one is suggesting (if indeed TWC execs and his brother threw him under the bus) that they did it to protect future victims of HW’s abuse or to assist former victims in finally getting justice.....

Capricorn76 · 11/10/2017 14:46

Someone upthread said Trump wasn't a rapist. Didn't Ivanka swear in court that he raped her??

These men disgust me, using their power to commit horrific crimes. HW is only the tip of the iceberg. Gossip columnists have been openly taking about the director Bryan Singer (X-men) and his fondness for boys for some time. There was even a documentary about Hollywood pedo's made by a former child star and although BS wasn't named, it was interesting how may times his picture was shown.

CoolCarrie · 11/10/2017 14:47

Yes Darth, money talks and clearly continuing to bail out his brother became a pita. I can imagine the conversation, " Shit, Harvey wtf! Who is it this time, and how much is it going to cost us now?" Not a thought for the horror of his behaviour over the years.
I had a snigger today at Loose Women, ( nothing new there mind)when JSP was talking about this and Cyril Smith. She was on Question Time at the time of the Savile horrors came out, in public at least, and she knew what that vile man was like, but she did nothing about it, but now she's all over it like a rash!

I am not victim blaming, especially when it comes to children, as in Savile/Smith cases, but turning a blind eye is outrageous, as user pointed out. User should , could have been warned and I am so sorry you went though that foul experience. 🌸

MissionItsPossible · 11/10/2017 14:50

Didn't Ivanka swear in court that he raped her?

WHAT??????? Are you actually kidding me?

MissionItsPossible · 11/10/2017 14:51

Capricorn Do you mean Ivanka or Ivana (Ivanka is his daughter, Ivana his ex wife)
