How would you feel if your 16 year old DS wanted to become a 'young conservative'

That is all!
Opinions please.

I'm really shocked by how judgemental and narrow minded some left wing people are.

Personally I agree and disagree with aspects of both parties, I'd be amused but hope that he would question things more than those who blindly follow one way or another sometimes do.

M4Dad · 03/10/2017 10:43

And I would also like to know how the Conservatives on here would feel if their 16 year old joined the Young Socialists

To be honest, I'm surprised that all 16 year school kids these days ARE NOT hammer and sickle wielding marxists - given the propoganda they get in schools, taught by almost exlusively left wing teachers.

Cheeese · 03/10/2017 10:43

Boris Johnson is a racist, yet he's still allowed to operate in the conservative party. Why is that?

Dont want to derail the thread btw

HostaFireAndIce · 03/10/2017 10:44

It's pretty irrelevant really considering the child you are talking about was raised in a staunchly Conservative household and you assumed that the children of people likely to reply to your thread were unlikely to be. You know that his parents are probably proud and you are contemptuous of him and the speal (sic) he spouts. You just wanted to start a Tory-bashing thread, which I suppose you have successfully done.

Lalalandfill · 03/10/2017 10:44

Well let's take climate change for instance.

Solid science, across the board agreement....and yet those on the right can't seem to grasp it

You're talking about far-right Trumpites, the Conservative Party acknowledges climate change and is trying to tackle it.

The more of such nonsense I read here, the prouder I'd be my child could see through it all and make up their own mind

WomblingThree · 03/10/2017 10:45

The OP is purposely goady. You could easily have phrased it “how would you feel if your child wanted to join the opposite political party from the one you support” but OP was looking to stir some anti-conservative shit. Quelle surprise 🙄

Increasinglymiddleaged · 03/10/2017 10:45

Conservatives are covertly racist. Dont deny it.

And no labour supporters are? O...K... then Hmm

BertrandRussell · 03/10/2017 10:45

"Maybe one day we can have some kind of gulag type establishment to re-educate such children "

Rather a leap from feeling disappointed to put them in a Gulag.

It's so typical of Mumsnet discussion. The automatic one step leap from "well I would be upset" to "OMG, you would disown him- that's awful!"

DaisyDrip · 03/10/2017 10:45

Very proud, it's important our young people show an interest in their future.

PollyPerky · 03/10/2017 10:45

Ecstatic Grin

JHC.

This is what happens when you surround yourself with people who only believe what you believe, you live in an echo chamber. Your statement is utterly, utterly wrong.

Liiinoo · 03/10/2017 10:46

My student daughter did this, partly because she is naturally conservative (with a small c) but also I suspect, because she knew it would wind me up. It only lasted a year and she bitterly regrets it as she is constantly bombarded with requests for financial support. And at election times, for practical support - they have even visited our house asking for her to help at the local headquarters and getting quite shirty when told no.

pambeesley · 03/10/2017 10:46

I have been a tory for as long as I remember.

Joined the party aged 18.

Now I’m 36 and still a member, not keen on May and hope Davidson is PM one day but much prefer May to Corbyn!!

HattiesBackpack · 03/10/2017 10:47

Whichever party, let's hope he isn't as intolerant, closed minded and plain unpleasant as some on this thread

Think this sums it up perfectly!

SemiNormal · 03/10/2017 10:47

I'd be thrilled he wasn't a Labour supporter if Labour supporters on this thread are anything to go by! What a disgusting, nasty and hateful bunch of people they appear to be.

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 03/10/2017 10:47

I'd shrug and say "if you really want to."

Yvetteballs · 03/10/2017 10:47

OP-I know the exact same family. You're not on the south coast are you?

Laura2018 · 03/10/2017 10:47

Cheeese - so you've gone from all of the conservative party are racist to just Boris is racist 😂 What about anti-semitism in the labour party, or are you ok with that?

chocdog · 03/10/2017 10:47

People of all races vote Conservative because they do not believe in socialism / communism. They believe in democracy , free markets and capitalism . Nothing to do with race.

WomblingThree · 03/10/2017 10:48

@Cheeese, two points: Boris Johnson is not THE Conservative party and are you categorically stating that there isn't a single racist in any other party?

NikiBabe · 03/10/2017 10:49

The majority of the population has voted Tory since 2010. Hardly surprising.

DOnt be one of those god awful mothers who forces their views onto their children.

my mother still thinks my being an atheist is an act of teenage rebellion. I am in my 30s!

Shock horror, 16yo can think for him/herself.

Ronnyhotdog · 03/10/2017 10:50

I’d be happy they were taking an interest in politics. I’d look forward to lots of discussions and hope at some point along the line he’d realise he’d made a massive error of judgement. If that didn’t happen then I’d accept he had very different views than the rest of the family and hope he didn’t begin to dislike us because we see things differently.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 03/10/2017 10:50

I don't think some people on the left have thought about quite how badly they come across, and how heckling people is far more likely to harden opposing views rather than bring people onside. (Speaking as a moderate leftie myself).

13Crows · 03/10/2017 10:51

I would be pleased he was interested in changing politics, whatever party he was interested in. However if he became a virtue- signalling Social Justice Warrior i would be f*cking devastated.

SilverySurfer · 03/10/2017 10:53

I would be very proud. I'm loving reading all the angst and horror from the left wingers Grin
