In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

Gosh, I love Maud and Martha!

I know a Lucrezia (which makes me think of Borgia but is common in Italy) and a Doris (common in German) and I know a French speaking Prince.

Sandycarrots · 03/10/2017 03:49

Thinking about it, Adolf for a boy would be pretty bad.

lalalalyra · 03/10/2017 06:24

Starlight - utterly ridiculous name for a Child. Best day of my childhood was moving schools at 14 and being allowed by my grandparents to start using my middle name.

I met a Mathyew once and he shared his word about his mothers desire to choose something different for his name.

sashh · 03/10/2017 06:46

In WWI it apparently became common to name children after the battles their fathers, brothers and uncles had been in or had died in.

Passchendaele, Ypres and Somme.

I once taught a class with both a Jay-Jay and a JJ.

I feel sorry for babies who are only given a nickname or shortened version (Charlie, Archie, Theo, Vicky etc). Not great for some professions when they grow up. Names can always be shortened informally.

They can also be lengthened informally. There's nothing stopping Vicky going by Victoria at work if she chooses.

I can't really imagine anyone (other than a few MNers) thinking that Archie or Vicky are inappropriate names for any profession tbh.

ScarlettOH · 03/10/2017 07:15

I think ’Starlette’ is the worst baby name I’ve heard recently

Gwencooper81 · 03/10/2017 07:18

MrsFeziwig. No, not your post, I don't recall your name from my skim reading.
I'll still standby what I said about the person ( not you!)who mentioned my daughter's entire name.

Gwencooper81 · 03/10/2017 07:21

*Fezziwig

PoppyPopcorn · 03/10/2017 07:25

LaBrujaPiruja -you forget Inmaculada Concepcion - Immaculate Conception. Perfect name for a little girl!

pigletpie29 · 03/10/2017 07:26

My little girl has a totally conventional name but I use the nickname sweet pea quite a lot (not even a nickname really, just an endearment.) A lady said it was a lovely name in the park the other day! I bet there are some actual sweet peas though...

DaisyDrip · 03/10/2017 08:46

I got to the end of this thread relieved none of my DC's names had been mentioned as 'worse names'. It then occurred to me, no one should feel that way especially a thread on a support site.

Sorry, but this is a horrid thread. I can't imagine what it must feel like for a parent to see their DC's name mentioned on this thread. If you did see that due to the name you chose for you child Flowers from me.

Fekko · 03/10/2017 08:50

Mine did cheeky fucker!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/10/2017 08:52

There needs to be a campaign about names.

'A name is for life not just for a toddler'

Evilstepmum01 · 03/10/2017 09:03

Pocahontas Maguire. I shit you not.

shooeghMcFee · 03/10/2017 09:12

I do like the name sailor for a girl. I imagine that there's some people who would hate it. I don't know why some people get offended if other people don't like the names they chose for their children: there's always going to be a difference of opinion and why care if a stranger hates the name you gave your child?

MrsXx4 · 03/10/2017 09:34

I love the name Sailor, also Leif and Scout! I'll be making a note of those!

a friend of a friend has two little girls one called Harley and one called Quinn. They aren't bad names and I actually really like the name Quinn, but together?!

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 03/10/2017 09:38

Is she a Batman fan? 😂

Knittedbreasts · 03/10/2017 09:39

Kizzi!

MrsJayy · 03/10/2017 10:52

I heard Storm a few years ago not sure if storm was a girl or boy or not as they were in a buggy The family looked a bit hippyish so didn't shock me tbf but they need to grow up get a job being called Storm 😕

MrsJayy · 03/10/2017 10:54

Dd2 loves batman i would imagine she would call a Dd Harley or Quinn

EvilDoctorBallerinaDuckKeidis · 03/10/2017 11:02

MrsJayy the woman on the phones on The Wright Stuff is called Storm. I think a TV job is the way to go. Or a music label.

shooeghMcFee · 03/10/2017 11:05

I have thought of another horrible one...

pauses for dramatic effect.....

Beverley

MrsJayy · 03/10/2017 11:09

Is she? good for Storm 😊 actually the more i type it the more i like it and it isn't the worst name

Clawdy · 03/10/2017 11:09

Pebbles. Pebs for short. Some years ago, she will be in her thirties now. She hated it then.

SquidgeyMidgey · 03/10/2017 11:14

Kizzi I used to teach a Kizzi, I think it was short for Kizzandra. Lovely lass.

I've seen all sorts of names on registers over the years, especially in inner city schools, but they're a reflection on the parents not the child. To be entirely honest the name that most fills me with horror on a register is Sophie, I've only ever taught one that wasn't a nightmare.
