In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

My friends colleague has a daughter named Prada.

It annoys me most when people don't consider the surname when naming their baby. For example, I know someone who has a daughter called Millie and she's pregnant and planning on calling it Mollie. It's made worse by the fact the surname is a common one very similar to Millie... Also know a Summer Summers Hmm.

@Tantpoke I also know chili pepper, box and scooter! Their eldest Ysanne got off lightly though

bananafish81 · 05/10/2017 02:08

@Redredredrose I have a cousin whose daughter is a Bo who started high school in September. Wonder if it's the same one?!

YouwouldntgodogginginBoden · 05/10/2017 02:27

I nearly started one of these threads earlier. I was at the craziest library I’ve ever been in and one Mum screamed across the room, “Imagine! Imagiiine!! Put the block down, honey!” And no, it wasn’t Imogen. It was Imagine.

Edgar Allan Poe probably helped to promote its popularity in "The Raven": "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore". I think that's rather lovely.

Agreed. My grandmother had a sister named Lenore, after the poem.

I don't know if we have Lenor fabric softener here. We mostly have brands like Downy, Snuggle, Bounce. I buy Gain myself. I love the smell.

Toadinthehole · 05/10/2017 03:36

Jack-Daniel.

Which must either be a deliberate joke or alternatively show a tremendous lack of self-awareness.

I think southern Africans have the right idea re names: it's quite normal to give a person a name that doesn't require its meaning to be translated.

It's become normal in the West to choose a name for some seriously bad reasons.

SuperBeagle · 05/10/2017 05:21

Leonore and Leonora are fairly well accepted names elsewhere. There is a Princess Leonore of Sweden, who's only about 3 years old.

Never heard of Lenore fabric softener, but I'm in Australia.

TinyTemperamental, Concepcion is a very common name in Spanish-speaking countries.

Redredredrose · 05/10/2017 07:28

@bananafish81 does your cousin have two younger children and live in a small market town beginning with F?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/10/2017 07:32

I thought Mungo was Scottish - a saint's name. Or have I imagined that?

Worst I ever knew of personally was Mortality - on a waiter's name badge in Lagos (Nigeria). No wonder he didn't look very cheerful.

HipppaHey · 05/10/2017 07:33

I also know a Ferrari and I went to school with a Marvellous.

Fekko · 05/10/2017 07:34

There's a St Mungos in Glasgow.

Cakebaby123 · 05/10/2017 07:52

@Cakebaby123 That's hilarious....you've mentioned my DD's name and a future DD's name (if I have one!) Grin

bananafish81 · 05/10/2017 08:06

St Mungo's is also a homeless charity in London

@Redredredrose nope, there's obvs two of them who are the same age!

TinyTemperamental · 05/10/2017 08:12

Footle, didn’t know about the Spanish connection.
This particular girl was in my college in India so everyone found it very unusual.

Redredredrose · 05/10/2017 08:19

@bananafish81 Bo must have been popular 12 years ago!

EvilDoctorBallerinaVampireDuck · 05/10/2017 10:38

St Mungo's the patron saint of Glasgow. He founded it and gave it it's name, which means "beloved green place". I have a Glaswegian XFIL. Blush

AndromedaPerseus · 05/10/2017 10:48

I came across a baby patient called Jihad

squoosh · 05/10/2017 11:05

I know a Scottish family with sons called Tavish, Mungo, and Sholto. Poshtastic.

grannytomine · 05/10/2017 12:50

Scottish people using Scottish names? Have you notified social services as this is surely a safeguarding matter?

squoosh · 05/10/2017 12:55

Very unusual Scottish names that one rarely comes across. Especially in the same family

No need to get in a tizzy.

guilty100 · 05/10/2017 12:57

My husband and his brother have not one but four very, very Scottish names each. His family don't even have a Scottish connection; they are from Tunbridge Wells but think it makes them more interesting to say they are honorary Scots it would take something considerably more exotic than that to be honest Hmm.

WaxOnFeckOff · 05/10/2017 13:01

My DSs have scottish names, but then we are in Scotland and Scottish :)

Murdo is one of the more unusual ones I've come across but I quite like it -I like it better than Mungo tbh

Footle · 05/10/2017 13:02

TinyT, all those señoritas called Conchita are really Concepcions.
