In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

I know a Manhattan

Clawdy · 03/10/2017 11:17

Kizzie is the little heroine of the lovely Rumer Godden novel The Diddakoi.

Has the the OP been back...?

I do find it quite curious that there are so many people worried about finding their child's name within this thread.

The name we chose for DD is a very normal, traditional name. I have received mixed responses to it, however am not offended by another dislike of it. It's our choice.

The difference here is that as her name is very normal, I have no concerns about how other people will view it or her as a result.

If you have chosen a name shall we say, less traditional, then surely you would have anticipated some mixed responses throughout the child's life? And further to this, I would expect a slightly thicker skin in relation to negative responses, as your child will certainly need to be able to take it on the chin as they carry said name throughout their life?

When did you teach this Kizzi squidgeymidgey? *wonders if you taught me :)

SquidgeyMidgey · 03/10/2017 11:38

Crumbs, head scratching now! 2003&4 in Birmingham.

WaxOnFeckOff · 03/10/2017 11:44

Family at my dc school who have Digby and Fizz. They have a new baby but I'm scared to ask what it's name is.

faithinthesound · 03/10/2017 11:55

Sparkiejane.

And jumping on the bandwagon, Navaeh. I mean, I get the "heaven spelled backwards" schtick, though I think it's as naff as anything, but this was heaven spelled backwards and wrong. (I have spelled the child's name right. Her parents spelled heaven backwards and wrong.)

juliecorrigan · 03/10/2017 12:05

I agree that it's cruel to get snobby or even bitch about names. However, I want to throw this in. A child named Orson. Surname Carte. Now that's cruel!
My lads had a friend called Blue Curtin. My youngest boy made me howl by quipping, "I used to go out with his sister, Annette". Still makes me smile.

Pinky333777 · 03/10/2017 12:07

@Glitterballsacks hahahaaa! My best friend has a Kali, Kaden and a Jayden. You'd LOVE her! GrinSmile

Beckywiththebadhair · 03/10/2017 12:58

I generally don't have an issue with what people are called but can't help rolling my eyes at attention seeking spellings. Yesterday I saw a 'Kloii' (Chlöe) on Facebook. It just seems a bit too try hard to me.

HipppaHey · 03/10/2017 13:28

@MrsJayy My DD is called Storm Smile

MrsJayy · 03/10/2017 13:30

Ack i knew that would bite me on the bum Blush

NameChangeFamousFolk · 03/10/2017 13:33

Kizzie is the little heroine of the lovely Rumer Godden novel The Diddakoi

Loved that book Smile

steppemum · 03/10/2017 13:37

we lived in Middle East and I had a cat called Kizzie after The Diddacoi.

My mum used to go outside and call 'kizz, kizz, kizz, kizzie'

Until a friend heard her do it and told her in a shocked voice that it sounded like the Arabic slang word for vagina!

HipppaHey · 03/10/2017 13:43

@MrsJayy I get why some people don't like it though. When I was pregnant, most hated the name. Now she's here, most like it. And we're definitely not hippies 😂

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 03/10/2017 14:23

I know a (male) Jackson Oliver (slightly changed). I think if I had a surname that was a very common first name, I probably wouldn't go for a common surname as the first name.

I always find Chinese people's choices of English name interesting. They're usually nice names, but don't fit their English age group (I know a Maureen, Shirley, Kenny and Elvis in their mid-twenties).

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 03/10/2017 14:50

@DonkeyPunch88 are you sure it’s not Orion? I know one of those ( pronounced O-Ryan) x

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 03/10/2017 14:54

I also know a Diamond and a Candy, both early 20s ... but they’re Chinese so I think they chose their own English names Confused

Fekko · 03/10/2017 14:55

I know an Elle (not short for anything) which I just think is a bit odd ( thinking the French here).

HarryHarry · 03/10/2017 15:44

The only names I think are a bit odd are the brand name ones. I once met a kid called Reebok which (correct me if I'm wrong) is a type of antelope. The kid even had the old Reebok logo shaved into his hair, like he was a walking advert.

I also read about a woman who called her daughter Leukaemia because she wasn't aware of the disease and liked the way it sounded. It made me a bit sad because it probably would be quite pretty if you could separate it from its meaning.

Regarding the practice of HK Chinese people giving themselves 'unusual' English names - it does happen and I think it's lovely. I personally know a boy called Cloud and a girl called Lemon.

ArbitraryName · 03/10/2017 15:53

I taught a class once where 8 of the Chinese students had chosen the name Maggie. That was fun.

Foniks · 03/10/2017 16:10

I had a teacher called Storm. I loved her and her name.
I went to school with a Kizzie too! Nothing wrong with it and I can't recall anybody ever saying anything about it.

I agree with pp that people shouldn't be offended if others don't like a name they chose, but that's not it usually on these threads, it's people actually being quite rude about them. Huge difference.
