To think a 40 minute drive is too far for a commute?

DD is 20 and is planning on going to uni next year. Her favourite uni is a 40 minute drive away. She would like to stay at home.

AIBU to think it's too far?

Not too far at all. My son goes to Leeds Uni and he has a 15 minute bus ride and then jumps on a train for 35 minutes. He lives at home

Cadenza1818 · 29/09/2017 19:06

Not at all. I'd say that's pretty good! Plenty of ppl commuted up to an hour in my uni.

Sirzy · 29/09/2017 19:06

Not far at all!

Allthewaves · 29/09/2017 19:06

No. But she needs to factor in fuel costs. I stayed at home and took me about an hour to get to uni

KittysMyName · 29/09/2017 19:06

I don't think a 40 minute commute is far at all, surely the average (work) commute is approx 1 hour? And especially if she really wants to go to that uni and live at home.

Bratsandtwats · 29/09/2017 19:07

Don't be silly, of course it isn't!

TheCometAndLittleLegend · 29/09/2017 19:07

No it is fine. The cost of the commute will be far less than renting close by.

ClaraLane · 29/09/2017 19:08

I commuted 2 hours each way to Uni in my second and third year as I only had 8 hours of lectures per week and even driving down 4 days a week was cheaper than living down there.

ZaraW · 29/09/2017 19:08

YABU she probably won't be home every night sleeping over at friends on night's out. It's not that far.

sweetkitty · 29/09/2017 19:08

My commute to uni was an hour and a half

Beamur · 29/09/2017 19:08

Not too far. Good length of time to listen to the radio or an audiobook Smile

lazydog · 29/09/2017 19:08

40 mins drive is nothing!

Heathen4Hire · 29/09/2017 19:08

Nope. More than an hour, maybe.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/09/2017 19:09

No, not too far.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 29/09/2017 19:09

Ds still at school is a 50 min commute!

ChoudeBruxelles · 29/09/2017 19:10

It takes me 45mins to work driving and I considered that fairly short

Trills · 29/09/2017 19:10

Not too far for a commute for work but will definitely make a difference to her experience of university if most of her peers are living on campus or in the city and she has to drive 40 minutes home.

Glumglowworm · 29/09/2017 19:10

Not too far at all!

She'll save a fortune even with paying petrol and her board at home

SandyDenny · 29/09/2017 19:10

That's no time at all, fairly standard for me and lots of people I know.

Heavy traffic can make even a short distance take that long on a work commute if there's an accident or road work

TheDropBear · 29/09/2017 19:11

I might be more difficult socially, would she consider halls for the first year and then moving back home?

alfagirl73 · 29/09/2017 19:12

I don't think I've ever had less than an hour's commute anywhere. Definitely not too far.

Normandy144 · 29/09/2017 19:14

40 minutes is fine. My daily commute is around 45 mins. It goes quite quickly when you drive.

youhavetobekidding · 29/09/2017 19:15

I wouldn't fancy it, but it can be done

lozzylizzy · 29/09/2017 19:15

Depends if it is a 40 min drive or 40 min but longer stuck in traffic

shopthenewcollection · 29/09/2017 19:16

God that's nothing
