To think a 40 minute drive is too far for a commute?

DD is 20 and is planning on going to uni next year. Her favourite uni is a 40 minute drive away. She would like to stay at home.

AIBU to think it's too far?

Of course not. Hardly anyone lives within 40 minutes of a university. If you lived in a big city a uni 4 miles away might take 40 minutes to get to.

I'm not sure what the average commute is nationally but I'd guess it's pretty close to 40 minutes.

SandyY2K · 29/09/2017 19:19

YABU. 40 minutes is fine.

Ttbb · 29/09/2017 19:21

You lead either. Very soiled or a very narrow life. I commute an hour and a half.

Ilovecoleslaw · 29/09/2017 19:21

My uni's about a 45 minute drive away on a good day, it's no problem at all

coconuttella · 29/09/2017 19:23

40 minutes really is nothing.... However, the fact you're asking this question implies you have never really commuted, which makes me wonder how you came to 40 minutes.... If it's 40 minutes on a quiet weekday in the early afternoon, it could easily be double that on a Monday morning!

KitKat1985 · 29/09/2017 19:24

40 mins is fine. DH's is usually an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half each way!

YouMakeMeFeelLikeDancing · 29/09/2017 19:24

Seriously? DS has an hour by car or two hours by bus. I'm actually shocked at you thinking it's too far. Do you want everything on your doorstep? Handed on a plate? Spoon fed?

EduCated · 29/09/2017 19:24

40 mins seems quite reasonable if she's set on staying at home.

mamalovesmojitos · 29/09/2017 19:25

Very reasonable commute.

LilaoftheGreenwood · 29/09/2017 19:25

Of course it's not too far.

What are you thinking the alternative is here? Her live in halls, or not go at all?

PuppyMonkey · 29/09/2017 19:26

A very soiled life Grin

I used to do a 40 minute commute to work every day in rush hour - surely it would be cheaper/better than forking out for student accommodation etc

Ttbb I'm sure the OP is perfectly clean. Wink

Millipedewithherfeetup · 29/09/2017 19:29

No 40 mins there and back again is fine but....she may have a lecture at 8 and another one at 6 ! It's a long day to be hanging around with no where to go and hang around. That's another good reason for staying in halls. Most students drag themselves out of bed for morning lectures then shuffle back to bed.

Fffion · 29/09/2017 19:30

My commute is about 40 minutes and it's fine.

HappyGoFucky · 29/09/2017 19:30

My eldest gets a taxi to secondary school (special needs so not on the doorstep) Her journey is longer than that. She manages quite fine and she’s only eleven

caterpillarcop · 29/09/2017 19:31

Nope. I commute that far to work - sometimes about 40-50 mins. Music and audiobooks make it fly by and it's my only 'me' time.

Yes, it's too far.
University isn't the same as work as she needs to factor in the extra curricular activities that she'll be expected to join in with.
Students that just attend lectures and tutorials then have to go home miss out on a lot of important socialisation opportunities.

bubblesdotcom · 29/09/2017 19:40

Errr, I do commute. However, uni is very different to work. The alternative is her staying on campus... Not many people commute to uni.

When I was at uni I lived in thecity but had a 40min walk in to lectures

Foreverlexicon · 29/09/2017 19:42

I commute that for work.

I also work some nasty shifts (although means I miss rush hour which is godsent) and look after 2 high needs horses by myself. If I can do it anyone can!

It's not cheap though

cosmonautkitten · 29/09/2017 19:42

Yes, it is too far. Halls or at least close proximity to them for predrinks etc are invaluable for initial bonding imo.

I went to a London uni and my total commute in from my second/third year shared house was around 40 mins (could do it in 30 if I jogged when always late Grin).

The difference was, though, that everyone had made friendships in first year in halls so we organised things in groups or met at our already known haunts - and we were all taking the train/tube/night bus/uber home so didn't have to worry about staying sober. It's not lectures that she'll find difficult, it's the social side of things.
