To expect high schools to provide lockers?

My daughter starts year 7 on Thursday in her high school but they don't have lockers so my child had to carry her cost, PE bag, books and folders ect around with her all day. Am I being unreasonable to expect a Locket to be provided so she can at least store her coat? And other things ?

The problem is that lockers take up a huge amount of room. And if everyone has to go to the lockers at the end of the day for their coat, it causes a huge scrimmage queue and people miss their buses and so on.

crazycatgal · 05/09/2017 14:44

I didn't have a locker at high school and some days would be expected to carry my school bag, PE bag and massive art folders around. Lots of high schools don't have lockers.

Letstryagainshallwe · 05/09/2017 14:45

Never had them when I was in school. We managed.

Sirzy · 05/09/2017 14:46

Just take in the minimum needed for each day. No reason it should be an issue.

We had lockers but nobody used them as it was more hassle than it was worth!

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 05/09/2017 14:47

She'll live though it

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 14:47

DS1 had one had his High School, and it was great. No lugging stuff about all day. Books, kit etc didn't have to come home with him every day on the bus.

DS2's High School took all the lockers out as they took up too much room. So all the children lug mountains of stuff from room to room all day, and don't even bother with coats.
Can't be much fun.

Spam88 · 05/09/2017 14:47

YABU. They take up a lot of space. Millions of us survived carrying our stuff. Their form teacher might let them leave some stuff in the form room - we used to leave PE kits there if our lessons weren't until after lunch.

dollydaydream114 · 05/09/2017 14:48

We never had lockers at my school but we did have (non-lockable) desks in form rooms we could leave things in. We didn't leave valuable stuff in them but they were fine for exercise books, folders, lab coat etc. I think I left my PE kit in mine.

Will she have something like that, do you think?

Whatever the set-up is, presumably other pupils manage so I'm sure your DD will too.

houseinthecorner · 05/09/2017 14:48

Thanks for your opinions

Also they say children are not allowed to have hoods on their coats so they either get wet or have to lug wet umbrellas around on top everyone else

Never had them when I was at school. What's the problem with carrying a school bag with PE clothes in it and hanging her coat on the back of the chair in each class?

NapQueen · 05/09/2017 14:48

No one at schools when I attended had lockers.

Pe kit - take only on pe days
Coat - pac a mac or no coat seems to be the way. Check she cant leave her coat hung up in her tutor room
Books and folders - should all fit in her backpack. If they dont then either the bag is too small or she is carrying too much.

Daily she will need her homework journal, text books for that days subjects if allowed home, excercise books for that days lessons if not already handed in with homework, and a pencil case.

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 14:49

I had a locker throughout High School we had mirrors in the doors and pictures of pop groups etc. Grin You just had to provide a padlock.

MarthasHarbour · 05/09/2017 14:49

I survived high school in the 80s without a locker. Well we had them but they were all broken and you risked getting stuff stolen from the ones that did work.

I turned out fine! Smile

KakunaRattata · 05/09/2017 14:49

I must admit I was surprised by this too as we had them at school 20 odd years ago but now they don't.
My only advice is to try and minimise what she takes so make sure she's emptying and repacking her bag each night (ds would just keep loading it all in!), don't take a lever arch file but relevant work in a button wallet and hot dinner on PE day. Make sure she has a roomy rucksack and not a daft handbag I've seen some of the girls with and a get a coat that packs small if possible. Good luck to your dd in year 7.

dementedpixie · 05/09/2017 14:50

Ours has lockers but not enough for everyone so dd hasn't got one. She doesn't take a coat as she'd have to carry it about with her.

lovelyupnorth · 05/09/2017 14:51

DD just finished y11 had a locker for 5 years and never used it, so don't see the point

Taught for many years but none of the schools had lockers.
The trick is to pack every day, as efficiently as possible. It will help her to remember what she needs on a day to day basis too.

gillybeanz · 05/09/2017 14:56

Nobody I know has lockers either, none of the high schools in our area do.
It's even harder when they start extra curricular and have instruments, or hockey stick tennis rackets etc.
When they do cooking they have to keep it with them all day too.
Their arms grow about 2" once they start high school Grin

DeadDoorpost · 05/09/2017 14:56

My first secondary school had lockers, my second one did too, but it didn't really feel worth it to have (a lot more expensive to 'hire' and the school was double the size of my previous one, including double the number of students). As for coats, we just took them with us/wore them in class if allowed/ left them in the form room if it was soaking wet. Never heard of a school not letting them have hoods though? That's a bit odd and I'd personally bring it up with the school to find out why.

MirandaWest · 05/09/2017 14:56

DS is going into year 9. Had a locker in year 7. Hardly used it and then lost the locker key.

Witsender · 05/09/2017 14:57

We had them and they were hugely useful, I'm surprised they're not used any more.

cricketballs · 05/09/2017 14:58

Her form tutor will more than likely provide storage for bulky things (We all do at my school)

SalamiSandwich · 05/09/2017 14:58

I had a locker at school, I didn't realise some schools didn't. It was really useful.

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 15:00

I didn't realise it wasn't the norm either Salami. Used mine all the time.
