To expect high schools to provide lockers?

My daughter starts year 7 on Thursday in her high school but they don't have lockers so my child had to carry her cost, PE bag, books and folders ect around with her all day. Am I being unreasonable to expect a Locket to be provided so she can at least store her coat? And other things ?

My dd's school doesn't have lockers either. However many of the schools with brand new buildings we looked around when applying for Y7 did. Friends with children at these schools say that you can pay for a locker each term but hardly anyone does as it takes too much time to go to your locker in between classes for stuff. I agree it would be useful for a coat or pe kit but it seems their kids find it easier to just have it with them.

squiz81 · 05/09/2017 15:01

My school didn't have them either. We all wanted them...part of that was probably seeing them on American tv shows and thinking they were cool Grin

The high school in my town doesn't allow them to wear coats! But it does have lockers...

nicknamehelp · 05/09/2017 15:01

My ds school is so big kids would waste time trying to get back to classes from lockers.

PE kits can normally be left in form room or PE dept. His instrument again is left in music dept.

He has never wornba coat just his jumper and blazer -coats are not cool!

He has survived along with his mates these hardships- oh and he manages to walk to and from school carrying all he needs.

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 15:02

Classrooms must just be full of children, school bags, PE kits, after school sports kits and coats.

LairyMcClary · 05/09/2017 15:02

I don't even know how that would be possible in my childs school, he would need a wheelbarrow to carry everything he needed for the day to school and back! They have lockers, couldn't possibly manage without them.

MorrisZapp · 05/09/2017 15:02

Boo hoo for the enslaved teenagers, having to 'lug' their own outerwear with them.

It'll be great training for being a normal person who carries coat, work bag, handbag and groceries on the way home. I concede it might be a bit annoying if they have to carry a cello.

By normal person you obviously mean "woman! ! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 15:04

But you don't carry your coat, work bag, handbag and groceries around with you all day at work. Confused

MrTrebus · 05/09/2017 15:05

*secondary school

Unless you're American.

You're welcome.

Also we didn't have lockers at school either and no one ever moaned, somewhere to put wet coats in a classroom is a good idea though even just a row of hooks.

BertrandRussell · 05/09/2017 15:07

Some secondary schools in the U.K. are called high schools.

You're welcome.

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 15:08

MrTrebus both my DC's schools are called ' High School'. And we are in England.

We have First School, Middle School then High School.

TabbyM · 05/09/2017 15:08

Actually "high school" is and always has been Scottish.

Hillarious · 05/09/2017 15:09

Yep, we hired one for DD at her secondary school, but didn't bother for DS1 or DS2. Teenagers can't be arsed to go back to their locker to drop off or collect stuff as it takes too long. As for lugging coats around, you'll find teenagers don't wear them! Grin

OnionKnight · 05/09/2017 15:11

I had a locker in the late 90's to early 00's, YANBU.

It was much easier back then.

coddiwomple · 05/09/2017 15:12

never had lockers either, from secondary you took everything with you. I can't remember it being an issue. I think we could just drop our PE bags in the PE hall first thing in the morning if we had PE that day, but that was about it.
We didn't drag bags with wheels either.

Schools are not that big, it's not such a big effort to carry your bag and your coat.

AlpacaLypse · 05/09/2017 15:15

A few years ago there was a thread on here where someone had weighed all the compulsory stuff that their year 7 was expected to carry around each day and discovered that it breached H & S regulations for the workplace. In other words an adult could not be asked to do it. So why expect children to do so?

LairyMcClary · 05/09/2017 15:15

Some schools are that big, and no way could my DC carry a whole days worth of stuff around all day. How would you manage an a3 sketchbook, art supplies, 5 textbooks, 5 hardback a4 books, maths sets, pencil cases, pe kits, library book, 3 dictionaries and a violin?!

minionsrule · 05/09/2017 15:15

Why aren't they allowed coats with hoods? That would piss me off more tbh

Sparklingbrook · 05/09/2017 15:15

YY some High schools are very big.

Blimey we had lockers 40 years ago (or at least a cloakroom to hang our coats). I guess things have changed and YANBU to be surprised.

UrsulaPandress · 05/09/2017 15:20

In my day we had a desk in which we kept our books, and a cloakroom in wich we hung our gaberdine and pe kit and kept our outdoor shoes.

We changed rooms for lessons so other pupils must have sat at our desks but nothing was moved and nothing went missing,

Ah. Those were the days.

DD had a locker but didn't use it, plus a big box type thing in the form room in which they could keep books.

coddiwomple · 05/09/2017 15:20

I don't know how you manage, it's been awhile, but I did easily and can't remember any complaint. I remember asking for help to carry my 2nd bag (god knows what was in it) when I was on crutches, the first one was a backpack.

It must have been excellent training for flying with kids on your own with a ridiculous amount of luggage and no airport trolley, so I'd say it was worth it.

ManicUnicorn · 05/09/2017 15:20

I went to a High School and am most definitely British. All the seconday schools around here are called ' High School'.

We didn't have lockers though, always wanted one! I blame Saved by the Bell!

Katedotness1963 · 05/09/2017 15:20

We didn't have them in high school (Scotland and the school was called our town high school), but we did have a cloakroom where you could hang your jackets. Now my kids go to a high school that has lockers and they don't use theirs. They just pack what they need for the day.
