To not enjoy a 'Sunday Roast'?

ManicUnicorn · 03/09/2017 12:45

Is it just me who doesn't get the love for it? It's probably the most boring and bland meal there is. A massive lump of tasteless meat and boiled vegetables, smothered in gravy.

My DF insists he has to have one every single Sunday, but quite honestly I'd rather have a curry, or pizza, or slag Bol, or anything other than a roast fucking dinner.

Why are we so obsessed with having a roast dinner on Sunday in this country?

Because a roast dinner, done properly, is the food of Gods Grin

expatinscotland · 03/09/2017 12:47

I don't see the big deal of a 'Sunday roast'. It's just a meal. We're having chilli tonight. If your DF wants one he can cook it himself and clean up after himself.

babybigapple · 03/09/2017 12:47

Wouldn't say I'm obsessed but I love a decent Sunday roast. By decent, I mean one I have cooked myself Wink

Cooked properly, it is not bland or tasteless at all...

HarrietKettleWasHere · 03/09/2017 12:47

If it's bland then it's not being done right.

Eleventybillionfucks · 03/09/2017 12:47

Roast dinners cooked right and seasoned properly make a brilliant sunday meal
We usually have a leg of slow cooked lamb and roasted vegetables or a slow roasted beef joint.
Ive never overboiled veg or overcooked meat

gwenneh · 03/09/2017 12:47

If your idea of a roast dinner is a lump of tasteless meat and boiled veg, you're doing it wrong.

HarrietKettleWasHere · 03/09/2017 12:47

Slag Bol Grin

SlaveToDisney · 03/09/2017 12:48

I cook a roast every Sunday it is my favourite meal of the week. I dont much like the washing up afterwards though.

chipsandpeas · 03/09/2017 12:49

i dont get the obsession either....must be an english thing

RupertsMum2 · 03/09/2017 12:49

I love a Sunday roast but hate cooking so would only have one if we were eating out.

TheNumberfaker · 03/09/2017 12:49

Stuffing... Roasted squash... Home made gravy. Mmmmm

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2017 12:49

Sounds like you've only ever had crap roast dinners.

But if he insists on you cooking it, then stop.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 03/09/2017 12:49

Love a roast, got some pork right now, sizzling away in the oven.

ponderingprobably · 03/09/2017 12:49

It's not my favourite either. I preferred slow cooked stewed meat, to roast. I like Yorkshire puddings and really good roast potatoes but have often experienced substandard ones which are not worth eating.

You aren't making them right!
Rare roast beef in thin slices
Dripping roast potatoes crispy on the outside and soft within
Yorkshire puddings like pillows
Creamy mashed potato
Roast parsnips
Carrots glazed in honey and butter
Spring greens
Cauliflower cheese
Gravy made from meat juices
Grin

i hate roasts as well. everyone else at home loves them, so I do them three monthly to prevent riots from breaking out. I don't think it's an issue with my cooking - I usually get good feedback especially on my roast potatoes - they're just not my thing.

My compromise position is rack of lamb, dauphinoise, and two veg. Much nicer, and a bit like a roast.

Spudlet · 03/09/2017 12:50

What? But I have a bloody chicken in the oven! It's going to feed for the next six months several days! Grin

Mind you, this is only the third or fourth one in two years, so I'm not bored of cooking them yet 🍗

Tilapia · 03/09/2017 12:50

We all love a roast, but the washing up is a bit of a pain. If your DF wants it I hope he's the one cooking it and washing up!

tigercub50 · 03/09/2017 12:51

Love " slag bol"!

toomuchfaster · 03/09/2017 12:51

I like a good roast, but not every week. Agree, it shouldn't be bland and tasteless but I just don't want it all the time.

Tbf I don't think I'd enjoy one of your Sunday roasts either (I say yours, I mean whoever is cooking ^^ that)

I love mine though.

ManicUnicorn · 03/09/2017 12:51

My DM is a terrible cook, and I wonder if Ive been scared for life by her awful Sunday dinners of rubbery chicken, leathery beef and mushy over cooked veg?

Eleventy what time do you want me? I can bring wine to go with either the lamb or the beef! Happy with either by the way, not a fussy eater GrinWine

Proper Sunday roast is immense. Honey roasted parsnips....homemade gravy....crispy roast potatoes.... Heaven on a plate!

starkid · 03/09/2017 12:53

YABVVU

ElChan03 · 03/09/2017 12:53

I agree! A lot of effort for little reward
