To not enjoy a 'Sunday Roast'?

ManicUnicorn · 03/09/2017 12:45

Is it just me who doesn't get the love for it? It's probably the most boring and bland meal there is. A massive lump of tasteless meat and boiled vegetables, smothered in gravy.

My DF insists he has to have one every single Sunday, but quite honestly I'd rather have a curry, or pizza, or slag Bol, or anything other than a roast fucking dinner.

Why are we so obsessed with having a roast dinner on Sunday in this country?

Everyone is different when it comes to food.

Sunday Roast is a British thing, it is served in Spain too, where the Brits go. Fine.

It's a personal thing. I don't like a plate of food that is groaning full of stuff. Puts me right off. I like the American way of putting everything on platters on the table, and you take what you like, in the portions you like.

I know, I know, you can tell me I don't know what I am missing, but I do know what my likes and dislikes are!

Only do a roast at Christmas. Served on platters the American way too!!

We are so lucky to have so much choice when so many go hungry.

BarbarianMum · 03/09/2017 14:32

A good roast is lovely but not every week.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 03/09/2017 14:39

The silverside was exactly on the point of pink/well done (DW can't eat rare) the potatoes were clouds enfolded in golden crispness, the carrots exuded sweetness and artemisin, and the gravy bestrode the table with vigour. Shortly I shall wind my grandson. I could die happy except I get to do it next week.

HolgerDanske · 03/09/2017 14:40

Worriedrose not sad at all, it's just great forward planning. Roast today, leftovers for the rest of the week! Smile

NotACleverName · 03/09/2017 14:40

I'm not a fan, certain roast meats play havoc with my stomach.

suckonthatmaureen · 03/09/2017 14:45

Mercy I've never eaten a roast dinner that had been plated up for me (and I've eaten a fair few). I've only ever had them when they've been presented in serving dishes to help yourself. I even serve them that way when it's just the 4 of us.

I would be a bit Hmm if the host assumed the quantities I wanted. But judging by the MIL 'portion police' stories I've read on here, maybe I'm in the monitory!

Worried, if you are anything like me, cooking is an expression of my love for my family and friends, and you deserve to cook with love for yourself, even if you are alone.

So get cooking Gorgeous!

re keeping the chicken from drying out, I have a pretty foolproof method.

If an unstuffed chicken I put the oven on at 220 celsius. I smear a bit of oliveoil, the juiceof 2lemons and a cup and a halfof dry white wine over the chicken.I add rosemary and garlic, cover the whole thing with foil (not tightly, enough for the air to circulate).

I cook at 220 for 30 minutes, then put the temp down to 180, and turn the chicken (my oven cooks unevenly).I cook covered again for another 40 minutes, then uncover and cook for about 30 minutes until the juices run clear.

It is so so so tender. My DH calls me Queen of the Chickens. Grin

Disgrace, you sound a bit like Nigella there Grin

fleshmarketclose · 03/09/2017 14:47

We have a roast on Sunday most weeks, we all love them. Your mum's roasts sound awful tbh so no wonder you aren't keen. We went twice a year, as children, to dgm for a roast and they were horrendous. So much so I still can't eat roast lamb or cauliflower. Df used to say "there's no one cooks like your mother and in my case thank bloody God!" Grin

NoTieForMilton · 03/09/2017 14:50

I love a good roast dinner.

As much as I love my PIL, I'm very glad to work 99% of Sundays because it means I escape their roast dinner.

Beef is cooked until well done, but whether it resembles beef or shoe leather is a lottery,2 small boiled potatoes each, 1 un roast, 1 Yorkshire pudding, All veg is cooked in the pressure cooker together. Gravy is either so thin it looks like water or has gigantic lumps of gravy granules in it.

A proper roast dinner is a thing of beauty.

zukiecat · 03/09/2017 14:51

I love a good Sunday Roast!

Can only really afford it on Christmas Day, and maybe a couple of times a year, so that makes it a real treat for us

After Steak Pie, Roast Beef is my most favourite meal

Oncewaswho · 03/09/2017 14:52

Leftovers, that's another downside to a roast, we don't like leftovers.

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2017 14:53

"To be fair, Ive never cooked my own because Ive always assumed I don't like them very much. However I do love tender roast chicken and crunchy vegetables"
And this differs from a roast dinner exactly how?

Cailleach666 · 03/09/2017 14:55

Leftovers, that's another downside to a roast, we don't like leftovers.

We deliberately cook more simply so there are leftovers.
Oh takes a packed lunch and I have loads of things to do with left over meat.

yorkshireyummymummy · 03/09/2017 14:56

I Stop cooking Sunday roasts from May to September so I will be starting them in the next couple of weeks when Autumn starts sneaking it's way in. I love cooking them as I love the pleasure my family get from eating them and if I didn't roast every week ( from September to May ) then I think there would be a riot in my house!

MarcyMercy · 03/09/2017 14:57

@suckonthatmaureen

Person after my own heart you are!

Then I saw Babs Ganoush pic..... urgh my favourite hate.

toastandbutterandjam · 03/09/2017 14:59

Worriedrose It's not sad at all!

I love a roast. I would eat it all day everyday if I could.
From April till June, I ate a roast 5 days a week, just for myself Grin
I'll often make one just for me if I want one. I absolutely love it.

I like to have around 13 potatoes, but can have more if there's leftovers. They're the best - especially with mint sauceGrin

A perfect meal!

TwatteryFlowers · 03/09/2017 14:59

I don't mind a roast dinner every now and again but I would hate to have one every Sunday without fail, especially if the task of cooking it fell on me.

My favourite meal is pie and mash covered in gravy. I soak up the excess gravy with a slice of bread. Unfortunately, my dc don't like pie (they don't like pastry!) so we don't have it very often.

tigercub50 · 03/09/2017 15:01

DH isn't keen on a roast but I love it, especially when there are loads of different vegetables. When we go to visit DH's family, we sometimes go to a pub that has a carvery & it's spectacular! A choice of meats, Yorkshire puds & well over 15 veg dishes. When meat is roasted properly, it can be soooo good. Just the thought of roast pork with crackling & apple sauce or tender roast beef or lamb with mint sauce........❤️

Winenight · 03/09/2017 15:03

I'm with you on this one- I'm a veggie and I find nut roasts stodgy and pretty boring. And most of the roasts I've had consist of watery, overcooked vegetables. The only really good part is the roast potatoes.

I went for a carvery once and it was awful. Flavourless cauliflower cheese, mushy vegetables and we all had to queue up to get it. My main course was kind of sat on the hot plate where the staff were serving up. DH didn't even bother eating as he doesn't like gravy.

On the other hand a good burrito, decent curry (Thai or Indian) or nice stonebaked pizza would be our idea of Sunday lunch heaven!

Some people love them, each to their own I suppose!

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2017 15:04

Leftovers are fabulous! How can you manage without leftovers?

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 03/09/2017 15:05

I like roasts but one every week can get boring - sometimes I think if I see another potato I will scream!

It also means you can't spend Sunday out. A roast needs you to be at home for hours even if you're just chucking things in the oven. And the washing! It's great to have a light, quick meal on a Sunday.

Tensecondrule · 03/09/2017 15:05

You must have only had crap Sunday lunches if you think it's bland boiled potatoes, a lump of meat and tasteless gravy! A good Sunday lunch (I include my own in that) has tasty meat, crispy roast potatoes, an assortment of fresh veg and very flavoursome gravy made from the meat juices. A joy to behold!

cushioncovers · 03/09/2017 15:08

A roast done well is my favourite meal. I can happily eat two a week.
