To not enjoy a 'Sunday Roast'?

Is it just me who doesn't get the love for it? It's probably the most boring and bland meal there is. A massive lump of tasteless meat and boiled vegetables, smothered in gravy.

My DF insists he has to have one every single Sunday, but quite honestly I'd rather have a curry, or pizza, or slag Bol, or anything other than a roast fucking dinner.

Why are we so obsessed with having a roast dinner on Sunday in this country?

If it's tasteless, you're doing it wrong. I've had a silverside in for 3 hours with another hour to go. It will be perfect. As will the goosefat roasties, the Yorkshire puddings, the tarragon carrots and Birds Eye peas*. The gravy will contain a glass of malbec for the ground note and a pinch of mustard to bring up the olfactory bulb. DW will make an apple pie, and then we'll all sit about having a farting competition with the baby.

*The one thing I can't improve on.

Have you thought about learning to cook?

LAlady · 03/09/2017 12:54

Not according to my teenagers. Their favourite meal of the week which is why I always do one on a Sunday.

Revenant · 03/09/2017 12:55

@marmeladeismyjam Yes! To all of it! Plus horseradish

TheSassyAssassin · 03/09/2017 12:55

Oh Manic, come to Eleventy's for lamb and wine! Or mine if I can be bothered later...but actually this thread is making me want to bother....yum!

TittyGolightly · 03/09/2017 12:56

We never had them growing up and don't now. (As a veggie they hold very little appeal.)

museumum · 03/09/2017 12:56

Absolutely adore a Sunday roast - but it's too early in the year!!
They're for October to March surely?

HarrietKettleWasHere · 03/09/2017 12:56

My Gran god love her made the worst of the worst of roasts. Christmas dinner once consisted of cold turkey legs, the gravy that she'd tried to make by adding an oxo cube to a huge jug of tepid water, and cabbage boiled to point it looked like lettuce it was that thin.

Cauliflower cheese that was cauliflower with a plastic cheese slice on top. Don't remember the potatoes so maybe that bit was ok.

Nearly put me off for life, I can tell you. But I make the nicest roasts, if I do say so myself. We are having pork roasted with apples and shallots later, with rosemary roast potatoes and red cabbage 😋

YABU. The most U anyone has ever been.

I love everything about it. I love cooking it in my pyjamas. I drink wine and DH keeps the kids in the sitting room. I have a couple glorious hours to myself.

And I love a roast. They are delicious. Roast dinner is my "if I could only have one meal for the rest of my life" neal.

MarmaladeIsMyJam what time do you want me round for dinner?

Want to come with me OP? I'm sure MIMJ won't mind you having a taste of a proper Sunday roast.

Do you have horseradish sauce or shall I bring my own?

TheSassyAssassin · 03/09/2017 12:57

Or we could just got to DisgraceToTheY's....

TheSassyAssassin · 03/09/2017 12:58

Go....not got! The drool on my fingers is making it hard to type!

Loopytiles · 03/09/2017 12:58

Bad roasts are a tragedy.

starkid · 03/09/2017 12:58

This thread is making me so hungry

ferrier · 03/09/2017 12:58

Not much effort at all.
Bung meat in.
Parboil tatties. Make batter or stuffing.
Chuck in oven.
Sort out veg - doesn't take a lot to pimp them up a bit.
Make gravy.
Pud takes a bit longer though Grin

PinkGlitter17 · 03/09/2017 12:59

You need Jamie Oliver's Ministry Of Food book. The recipes in there have revolutionised roast-cooking in our house, they walk you through the whole process and you end up with luscious, luscious food!!

SomeBerryJam · 03/09/2017 12:59

Oh yeah @TheSassyAssassin I can pull a "Geraldine Grainger on Christmas day"

Badcat666 · 03/09/2017 13:02

Ahhhh.. Roast chicken (seasoned with salt and fresh ground pepper with a half an onion and half a lemon up its bum) or rare beef (seasoned with garlic salt and fresh ground pepper) Fluffy Yorkshires, golden crisp roasted spuds, honeyed carrots, peas and bisto gravy......

dribbles on ipad

What is not to love?? Sounds like you've had grim ones. Learn to cook one yourself, you will be surprised and its tastebuds delights!!! Go for any veg you love! We change it up depending what's in the fridge...mmm.. Tenderstem broccoli, parsnips, leeks.... The list is endless in its yummy goodness!

Badcat666 · 03/09/2017 13:03

Oh and stuffing! Gotta have the paxo stuffing either just cooked in a tin or ickle balls of crispy noms!

Sparklingbrook · 03/09/2017 13:04

It's too much faff. I don't want to spend Sundays in the kitchen peeling veg and making yorkshire puddings and stuffing, nor does anyone else in the house. Let alone all the clearing up afterwards.

There's a pub not far away that does a mean carvery so if we feel the need we head over there.

Generally food wise Sunday is just a normal day here.

Zoloh · 03/09/2017 13:05

YABVVVU

It is the nicest thing in the world.

ManicUnicorn · 03/09/2017 13:05

To be fair, Ive never cooked my own because Ive always assumed I don't like them very much. However I do love tender roast chicken and crunchy vegetables, maybe I need to try and have a go myself?

I also LOVE caulliflower cheese as a side dish, never had it with a roast though. My DM's consisted of burned roast potatoes, peas, carrots, mushy over cooked broccoli or calliflower and meat, smothered in watery Bisto.

SomeBerryJam - back-to-back Sunday roasts? I'm in!!!

greendale17 · 03/09/2017 13:08

YANBU- a roast is nice however I can't even remember the last time I had one.

jaseyraex · 03/09/2017 13:08

Proper Sunday roast is good, but still not every Sunday for me. I like a roast as long as I've cooked it! Homemade roast potatoes are the best part for me, have to be cooked in goose or duck fat, nice and crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, sprinkling of maldon salt on top. Delicious 😀 I do much prefer a curry though. Cannot beat a good homemade curry! I do one every Friday or Saturday.
