Really fucked off with Euro exchange rate

We have been going on holiday self-catering to the same place in Europe for over 10 years.

This year everything feels prohibitively expensive - to the point where it is really inhibiting what we can choose to do.

We are here for 2 weeks and it's really hard as family of 4 (with 2 teenagers) to spend less than £100/euros a day on activities/eating out.

Not in a beach resort type place, so taking a picnic to the beach for the day isn't an option - nearly everything there is to do here costs money. 3 euros for a coffee, 3 for an ice-cream - it all quickly adds up. Even the 'cheap' food in the supermarket is expensive. Practically at parity with £.

Bloody Brexit!

Yes you ingrates, now we've Taken Back Control, why would you even want to go to horrible Euro land!

Only joking. Just back from Spain, depressed at the cost, but sorry, doesn't make me want to go camping in the Lake District next time. I'll economise on day to day spending here instead.

theduchessstill · 27/08/2017 17:29

What a pile of shit Margaret. I don't give a fuck what class i am but I work my arse off all year and a holiday somewhere warm for some quality time with my dc is something of a highlight. If that's now going to be out of reach I am fucking livid.

I'm by no means privileged and if your snobbish and unpleasant comments reflect your understanding of the lives of the sort of people commenting on this thread, well, no wonder you think brexit is a good idea

I'm with you OP.

And yes, it does feel like a return to the early 1950s. But then Brexit was about bringing back the good ol' days...

Hear Hear theduchess you have said what I was trying to say exactly.
I am fully convinced that when we look back the lies that were told will be like our Watergate.
Class is a complete red herring and I love the assumption that working class people just go to Benidorm etc.
Pure tabloid creating is Margaret

Mrskeats · 27/08/2017 17:33

Creation obvs

Mrskeats · 27/08/2017 17:42

Theresa May should be ashamed too
Her stupid party make it unaffordable for lots of people to travel then fucks off on holiday to Italy (although clearly we want no part of Europe)
You couldn't make it up

RandomlyGenerated · 27/08/2017 17:50

We saved 25% on our family holiday to Europe this year.

One of us stayed at home.

Increasinglymiddleaged · 27/08/2017 17:57

Maryz I am only pointing out that it may well have the opposite effect to the one that you are suggesting. The idea that we have cheaper food prices than the rest of the EU so leaving will make them more expensive is Confused. It's importing countries that set tariffs. A much bigger issue than the WTO 2% is the pound being weak. But like everything time will tell.

Interestingly we met some Australians today who were also complaining about the exchange rate. The Euro is strong at the moment generally, OK Brexit is making it worse but it isn't the whole story.

GrumpyOldBag · 27/08/2017 17:58

Actually I also love to holiday in the UK as well - but this trip is also so we can visit elderly relatives who live here (and sadly are too frail to travel to the UK to take advantage of the rock bottom prices).

Anyway, I can see quite a few people are also feeling my pain, which weirdly makes me feel better somehow. So thank you for that lovely ladies of MN.

Well it's surely a benefit of the riff raff have to holiday in the UK...?

So hang on a sec, if you work you arse of all year but can't afford to house your family adequately or feed them because your wages have been so depressed by Eastern European labour you should just suck it up because someone a bit richer than you wants a holiday?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 18:08

time they spend banging on about how traumatised they are by Brexit because they might have to eat a potato instead of a 'vibrant salad' in January and that poor little Felix might not be able to go on Erasmus or they might have to increase their cleaners wages

Bollocks

Mrskeats · 27/08/2017 18:08

'Wages depressed by Eastern European labour'
Wtf you on about? As an English teacher I find this a non issue
If you are being undermined by people who have English as a second language and have no contacts etc then maybe you need to look at yourself
Why are there jobs anyway if British people are unemployed? Because foreign nationals do the tough jobs that we won't

SilverySurfer · 27/08/2017 18:10

Viviennemary
I voted for Brexit and am glad I did. Their loss if people stop going on holiday because the Euro is over valued. Wait for big Greece financial disaster coming soon. And maybe Spain now too. France and Germany are the main beneficiaries of this crackpot club. When will other countries realise.

Totally agree, not forgetting Deutsche Bank's little problems www.bloomberg.com/gadfly/articles/2017-02-02/deutsche-bank-sinks-as-a-rising-tide-lifts-other-boats and of course Italy's uk.businessinsider.com/italian-banking-problem-2016-7?r=US&IR=T

Add to that the unemployment rate in. eg, Spain - 17% for over 25s and 39% for under 25s compared with a total of 4% in the UK, not all seems quite so rosy in EUland.

MargaretTwatyer · 27/08/2017 18:14

God this is so the reason Brexit happened. A load of relatively wealthy people lecturing those worried about wages, industry and housing about how selfish they were because they would ruin their holidays.

Let them eat cake indeed.

This is one of the most gobsmackingly unaware posts that I've read in a long, long time. I don't even know where to fucking start.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 18:14

Can't wait till the Remoaners head back from the Costas and fill Blackpool and Great Yarmouth again! A little rain never hurt anyone!!!

Luckily the worlds a big old place Grin

crazycatguy · 27/08/2017 18:14

The pound is weak nearly everywhere right now. No coincidence that it has been since June 23 last year. It's been weak before but has usually bounced back within the year. I'm one of those filthy immigrants Brexiteers voted against and on my last return trip was horrified at how expensive Canada was for me, but not for my family there

2014newme · 27/08/2017 18:16

I won't holiday in UK I'll go outside Europe!

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 18:16

I am definitely worried about wages, industry and housing

But i am also able to sympathise with those who want to bitch about prices going up

Multi tasking...

Mrskeats · 27/08/2017 18:18

How the hell do you know who is wealthy on here?
What a load of assumptions you do make

Rodhullstvaerial · 27/08/2017 18:29

It's also blatantly obvious from the amount of time they spend banging on about how traumatised they are by Brexit because they might have to eat a potato instead of a 'vibrant salad' in January and that poor little Felix might not be able to go on Erasmus or they might have to increase their cleaners wages

This x1000. Now the middle classes are starting to miss out things are really bad. No concerns when the working classes were being fucked over but now your holiday in Tuscany is more expensive things have gone too far. :)
