Really fucked off with Euro exchange rate

We have been going on holiday self-catering to the same place in Europe for over 10 years.

This year everything feels prohibitively expensive - to the point where it is really inhibiting what we can choose to do.

We are here for 2 weeks and it's really hard as family of 4 (with 2 teenagers) to spend less than £100/euros a day on activities/eating out.

Not in a beach resort type place, so taking a picnic to the beach for the day isn't an option - nearly everything there is to do here costs money. 3 euros for a coffee, 3 for an ice-cream - it all quickly adds up. Even the 'cheap' food in the supermarket is expensive. Practically at parity with £.

Bloody Brexit!

When everyone predicted this would happen pre-referendum we were assured it was just Project Fear. Strangely, this is only one of a number of similar predictions which is proving to be 100% true.

We are a family of 6 (including 3 teens) and have just got back from a 3 1/2 week road trip through Europe. DH and I spent most of it in a cold sweat at how quickly the Euros were slipping through our fingers Shock.

The €3 for a bottle of fruit drink (single serving) in a German service station was a highlight. We were gasping for drinks before we stopped and gasping with shock afterwards!

We won't be doing another European holiday for a long while.

MrsGotobed · 27/08/2017 16:39

other places in Europe outside of the main popular resorts are still good value - I would have to disagree with that. We are urgently staying with family in Europe in a very non-touristy, inland location (not France) and it is significantly more expensive than when we were here 3 years ago.
Shops where the children used to love to go to pick up a bargain are now expensive, supermarkets are expensive and don't get me started on eating out!

MargaretTwatyer · 27/08/2017 16:40

Incidentally, I would imagine many of the complainers are the sort of people who would tell those who were having the wages and conditions hugely suppressed in their industries by cheap European wages while the cost of housing was inflated by Eastern European incomers or they were laid off their factory jobs because exports collapsed that that was 'just the market', while they object to not being able to fine dine for £20 while on their hols.

I'm in France at the mo and it's still slightly lower than prices at home or perhaps comparable. But I think as far as priorities go, cheap holidays for the middle classes are pretty low down the list.

silverbell64 · 27/08/2017 16:40

I'm going away soon to Spain and quite happy with the rate.

SandyBeachandtheDeckchairs · 27/08/2017 16:41

I heard lots of European families on the beach at Camber Sands this year, they may work locally but I took it as a sign they are coming here for a cheap beach holiday. Also Oxford Street is packed full of people buying up our 'cheap' luxury goods.
Some people are doing OK out the week pound at least .

elizabethdraper · 27/08/2017 16:41

the exchange rate is great for me. have down a load of christmas shopping on amazon

allegretto · 27/08/2017 16:42

Silverbell - why?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:42

I'm not sure that being forced to holiday in Britain, because the rest of the world is prohibitively expensive, is any kind of silver lining

This, but thanks for trying Smile

user1498726699 · 27/08/2017 16:42

Just to add we did a similar trip 2 years ago and that trip did not feel half as expensive as this one.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:43

Oh my actual god

Epic fail

thecatfromjapan · 27/08/2017 16:44

Ture, true, Margaret. I think it's great that we're making things unaffordable for all but those who can afford it now. I think the very well-off have a far better understanding of the culture of places they visit than those on lower incomes and are far more deserving of visits abroad.

BWatchWatcher · 27/08/2017 16:45

I was in France last week.
Everything was more expensive in terms of equivalence between euros and pounds and then we had the bad exchange rate.
Thanks so much Brexiteers.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:45

Oh please god let the catfromjapan be joking....

somewhereovertherain · 27/08/2017 16:47

Double hit as holidays more expensive and so are imports. Most of our suppliers are 20-25% more expensive.

Some fucking idiots think Brexit will be a good thing. Sadly not in the short to medium term. And I'm not sure in the long term how good it is sticking two fingers up at your biggest trading partner. But it's okay cause we can do a trade deal with trump.

Mrskeats · 27/08/2017 16:47

Why are European holidays just for the 'middle classes' Margaret? What a twattish thing to say.
Are all kids who now probably won't be able to go on a school trip middle class?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:47

Yep birds i agree

They will just cut back even more on what they spend on here to afford the same holiday that they always have.

thecatfromjapan · 27/08/2017 16:47

Rufus you're such a moaner.

This is a real opportunity to reduce the carbon footprint of UK citizens. D'oh!

I would imagine mainland European holiday destinations will start to struggle if us brits stop going.

really? really? there are not that many brits compared to 'europeans'...

silverbell64 · 27/08/2017 16:48

Here we go [hides thread]

Increasinglymiddleaged · 27/08/2017 16:50

it's scary

Really...? Personally I'm more worried about that nutter in North Korea and ISIS. But hey ho.

We're on holiday at the moment in Croatia, I wouldn't say it's 'prohibitively expensive' but meals etc cost much the same as they do at home. So cheap it isn't.

It was bound to happen, I doubt it will be permanent. Not least because the Greeks will threaten to leave the Euro again at some point and cause instability that way.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:50

margaret

So people can't complain about the price of their holiday

Friends of mine go abroad every 3/4 years and save for ages...but they can't complain?

Perhaps you can give me a list of what i can complain about...I'm going to ignore it and carry on sympathising but its worth a go

SilverySurfer · 27/08/2017 16:51

allegretto
I expect a Brexiteer will be on in a minute to say it's a small price to pay for sovereignty.

Just to make you happy: it's a small price to pay for sovereignty Smile

Actually I haven't been able to afford to go on holiday for about ten years, so please excuse me for not crying in sympathy.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 27/08/2017 16:51

Nope its alright cat just saw your reply to margeret

Grin

Phew..my world order was all upside down

Increasinglymiddleaged · 27/08/2017 16:53

Actually I haven't been able to afford to go on holiday for about ten years, so please excuse me for not crying in sympathy.

And here lies the route of why people voted for Brexit. Our gross inequality and the fact that the so-called benefits of the EU were not felt by everyone. They are hardly going to cry a river because it costs me 50 quid for a meal out are they....?
